When it to a dog's prey drive, it depends on the breed and individual. Some breeds like huskies and of course wolf dogs tend to have a higher prey drive, whereas a pug not so much. Even then, with breeds that typically have a higher prey drive, some individuals can get along with small animals. I saw this video where this female husky named Belle nurtured and cared for some rabbits, viewing them as her own. Whereas with Harvey, well... "he's a derpy psychopath."

And an _especially_ big "thank you" to clarifying why you don't put Harvey and/or Kane on a Vegetarian (or God forbid, VEGAN) diet - the fact is that they _can't_ survive on veggies. I didn't realize they can actually get Vitamin C via meat. Regarding the study you brought up...I think I remember hearing about that. Like you said, plants have feelings, too, it turns out. If the pet owner wants to have a vegan lifestyle that's fine. But to force it onto a natural predators is horrendous. Because the worst part of it is it ruins their health. Yes cats, dogs and even wolf/dogs along with some other predators can eat some fruit and vegetables. But they cannot live a healthy life on just that. On the other hand I had a cat that left dismembered rodents all over the place at the same place at the same time and I thought of him as essentially a serial killer. As long as you don't let them out into the wild to hunt native wildlife (like some people do with cats roaming free, decimating bird populations) it's only natural that dogs with prey drive will catch small mammals (or sometimes lizards) that come into your yard. I appreciate your explanation about the inclusion of the rabbits in that other video, especially since you've said before that your channel is partially about educating people on what it's like owning a wolf-dog. Personally, it was the lack of preparation in both seeing and hearing the dying sounds of the rabbits that affected me. For clarity, I'm no "hippie"--I'm a meat-eater; I know how the sausage is made, but that doesn't mean I want to go to a meat-packaging facility and watch the slaughtering happen myself. It's your channel, I get that you're not going to censor yourself for the sake of a few, etc. It was just hard (again, for me personally, not trying to speak for everyone) watching that video, thinking some funny story was being recounted, and then realizing thirty seconds in that Harvey and Kane were still in the process of eating the bunnies. Edited to add that my having pet rabbits as a kid definitely makes me biased in seeing them as pets rather than "food" animals. Nothing wrong with eating them if you do, but I doubt I ever will (unless I'm stranded in the woods or something ig). TL;DR: Just wanted a warning that they were eating the rabbits on-camera. I thought the beginning of the "killer" video was a re-cap of what'd been going on in your backyard and wasn't prepared for what the video actually showed.

@@annapreble Well, I'm sure it's healthy and moral if those said animal companions are parrots or rabbits! 😁 But yes, I think nowhere does this detachment show more than the horror some westerners show at the prospect of eating horses. So I've always questioned why cows, pigs and chickens are free game but horses etc. are immoral to eat. If you eat meat you contribute to the killing of cuddly animals and most people really don't come to terms with that.

Remember, homo sapiens are omnivores, we can pick and choose what we wish to devour, canis lupus and canis lupus familiaris are primarily carnivores. Although canis lupus is capable of consuming berries and nuts, it is not their staple, they have evolved to digest flesh and organs, that includes canis lupus familiaris, which can go obese or have nutritional deficiencies, if their dietary needs are not met. I'm sorry to say to the hippies and hipsters, but dogs and wolf hybrids are carnivorous, you cannot change their nature just because you disapprove of their role in nature, by the way, wild rabbits can be vicious, ever seen or read Watership Down? That is perhaps the closest to a rabbit's true nature, rather than the milquetoast fables published to make rabbits gentle and meek, and besides, rabbits can be destructive to all of that vegetation, the vegans are so obsessed with rescuing, in addition, to all of the insects who feed on plants, so do us all a favour - keep your beliefs to yourselves.

Alright, training the instinct to hunt out of a wolf altogether while also living in an area where rabbits regularly wander onto your property may well be impossible, but the metacommentary about its ideology & human hypocrisy seems superfluous. If you can’t help it, just let them have their rabbits, it’s not possible to always be morally impeccable, but it’s also not hypocritical to want to (have your pets) cause as little suffering as possible (and no, plants without a central nervous system using rudimentary chemical signalling is not the same as a mammal being conscious of getting eaten alive, but this is veering off into topics above, I suspect, both our heads).
