Thanks for this video! All the other ones show the old alternator coming right out and the new one sliding into place nicely, which was not my experience at all. Thank you so much for showing how to deal with a repair that does not go as smoothly as it could have.

Thank you Matt for this informative replacement video, I just replaced a alternator for a 1.7l Honda Civic and after never replacing one before I then went to KZbin to see what is involved in doing one. After watching your video twice I then went and removed and installed the alternator for a friend's car I took 2-3 hours to get it done but got it finished and the motor runs beautifully with no battery symbol on dash. Thank You Matt

The video was so informative right down to the power steering reservoir bracket being in the way of getting the alternator out because of the bolt being too long

Great video! Changed my first alternator out today following your instructions to the letter. Only had 1 leftover nut when I was done, lol. Thank you!

Holy crap that seems like one of the replacement swaps I'd be motivated to pay someone to do.

Thanks for the video; the adjustment bolt was a pain to come off, but I should have put penetrating lubricant on it first before removing it. It took me about 1 1/2 hours to complete the job. I followed it step by step. I was able to save some money by not paying a mechanic to complete this job for me.

Hi Matt. Just finished changing my alternator, wow was that a lot, but your video helped a whole lot. you were right. anything that's in your way just remove it. I definitely need to get myself a low profile ratchet like you have. Thanks again dude.

Dude, love the video!! Very detailed, yeah, you forgot to take off your watch, forgot to undo and reconnect the battery cable, but, that only made the video more authentic.., I was like, yeah, I would’ve done the same thing!!! Lol thanks man, thumbs up!!!👍

Being a female I would have attempted this but when I saw the power steering column having to be removed and the tire I changed my mind. Great video and thanks for sharing.

Great video but the watch thing brought back memories. I never wore a watch to work on a car but after doing some work under the dash I got ready for the last road test of the day and put my watch back on. Had to reach under the dash to reconnect a loose wire and managed to Short Circuit with the watch band clasp. It's been more than 30 years but I still remember the skin flopping around as I tried to force open the welded shut clasp. And another story an on-site generator started to slide on mud and the person who grabbed it was wearing a wedding ring. The generator actually flipped on its side as he was trying to stop the slide and the wedding ring caught on the generator. It was an older ring that had worn quite a bit. As the ring was dragged down the sharp edge cut in and just peel the flesh off the finger like a potato peeler. There you go two opportunities not to have to learn from your own mistakes:-)

Oh man!!! I don't wear a watch anymore for this stuff but sometimes I forget to take off my wedding ring....

Thanks for the video! I had an issue with squealing belts on this car. I bought some new ones. Followed the procedure of taking the bolts off from the power steering and removing the belts. But that adjusting wing nut you were talking about at 5:28 is rusted solid. I tried pb blast, still rusted badly. I cannot seem to get that thing to turn at all. I think it was adjusted too tight and that what was causing the noise. Any solutions? Thanks again!

+James Whyte At 4:48 can you see the bracket next to the AC compressor pulley? That bracket holds the wing nut bolt and tensioning assembly. If you remove that, you can work with it on the bench and use some pliers to turn the bolt free. After that, you can clean it up real nice with a wire wheel so it threads nice and easy. This happened to me once before and that is what I did.

+MattsMotorz Thanks a bunch! that's what I'll do. Earlier jacked the car up and took the wheel off and tried getting at it with a regular ratchet that wasn't happening. Looking like I'll need a breaker bar maybe? and a 20"+ extension to get in there. How should I go about adjusting it, like how do you know when you've adjusted it to the right setting, or when it's too tight or not tight enough? Any more advice on this would be amazing. It's kind of maddening!
@MattsMotorz
@MattsMotorz 8 жыл бұрын
James Whyte What do you mean exactly when you say "that wasn't happening." Do you mean, you got the ratchet on the bolt, but was not able to loosen it because it was too tight? Or do you mean you couldn't find a way to even fit a ratchet on there? You should be able to get on the bolt with a rather. (To be clear, we are talking about the bolt that holds the bracket in correct?)
@jameswhyte1340
@jameswhyte1340 8 жыл бұрын
+MattsMotorz Yeah, the one at the end of the bracket at 4:40. I was able to get the middle one/lower alternator bolt off like in the video but that one at the end is hard to maneuver, I can't seem to loosen it because pulley and such are in the way.
@MattsMotorz
@MattsMotorz 8 жыл бұрын
Hmm. It is hard to say without actually being there. But try getting at it with an extension. Shouldn't need to be too long, just enough to get past the pulleys. I don't remember that bolt being hard to get to, but it's been awhile.

I can't get that bottom bolt in through the slot under the alternator. It's like the new alternator isn't as long as the last one. Is that slotted bracket designed to move at all? I'm about to go insane...

Thank you so much for the welldone video help. Do you know if it is possible to replace the alternator regulator without taking the whole alternator out? is it ecternal, or mounted inside the alternator?

can I do this very small female. not experience with any of this kind of stuff. I know how to change a tire but that's about it. what tools do I need to do all of this? I just do not want to pay my Macanic again. already paid him alot of money this month. if I watch this video step by step i would be fine?
@MattsMotorz
@MattsMotorz 8 жыл бұрын
This wouldn't be a job I would recommend to someone with absolutely no experience doing mechanical work. However, you gotta start somewhere. You could most likely get the job done, but it would take hours and really test your patience. You would also need to invest in tools, such as a socket / ratchet set, pry bar, extensions and so on if you don't already have these.

I noticed the battery is at the front opposed to mine I have a 1.7 l LX model so how different would that replacement be?
@MattsMotorz
@MattsMotorz 8 жыл бұрын
This engine is also the 1.7, but the model is the EX. Since it is the same motor, I am assuming it will be the same, or at the very least, extremely similar.

I started to do this job and managed to pull the alternator out. However, I broke the wing nut screw that adjust the power steering pump. The screw was so rusted it broke clean off at the threaded hole. So now I have a broken screw in that adjuster. Going to finish the job today or tomorrow, I’m hoping that broken screw doesn’t make things more difficult

+Phllip Campbell The thread is probably 8mm but the head takes a 12mm socket. My bet is that they are correct.
