Alternator Replacment Acura TSX Honda Accord

Gotta give a thunbs up !!! Theres many TSX alternator replacement videos on youtube and I watched them all - This is the best one and most simple. Removing the 2 bolts to the power steering pump is where its at. No need to move the PS resevoir. To remove the 2 bolts on the bottom of the alternator - use a deep socket 12mm and a flex head or swivel head ratchet, its a pain but can be done - removing the fan would help but I didnt. Another valuable tip - If you get the alternator from Advanced or auto zone - go ahead and rent the serpentine belt removal tool - made taking off the belt and putting back on so much easier then just return it when you return the Core - I did this unexpected project for my daughter this afternoon in an hour. Had to jump her car off last night afterwork then followed her home 20 minutes - her lights flickered the whole way home and the instrument cluster even went dead... New alternator in and the 2005 TSX with 120k now puring like a kitten again.

On a 6 cylinder 3.5 you have to do a lot of different stuff. You have to take the bracket off that holds the cable that runs to the alternator hook up. There's some weird hook up that runs through this cable patch that hooks up to the engine under the alternator, but the cable is connected to the back of the alternator. You have to take that off. Then you have to make sure you take both of those cowlings off, those black covers that cover the radiator and the side where the radiator fluid is and the window cleaner fluid. Then the little bottle that holds the radiator fluid, you have to take it off and take the bracket off that holds it in place. Then you can orient the alternator so you can slide it out of there. And remember exactly how you slid it out because that's the same position you have to use to put it back in there. Remember to start from the bottom when reinstalling the serpentine belt. If you are replacing the alternator I would go ahead and replace the belt.

I appreciated the video, HOWEVER, I found it impossible to get the bottom bolt (closest to the engine block) back in the alternator. There wasn't enough room to get my hand down there to get the bolt started. I had my 12 year old son try to start that bolt since he has smaller hands/arms but he couldn't do it either. I had to remove the radiator fan in order to get the bolt back in. Let's just say it took me a lot longer than I anticipated. It helps to know that the two radiator fans are separate and you only need to remove the left side. So I would highly recommend if you are doing this job to remove the left radiator fan before trying to remove the alternator. This will make it much easier to remove and reinstall the bolts at the bottom of the alternator. Also I paid right around $100 for the cheapest remanufactured alternator I could get from Advance auto and it fit and is working just fine. Acura had 200,040 miles on it when I replaced this alternator. I'll try to remember to update this post in 6 months.

How many bolts are there to remove the left fan? I saw 2 on top.

With fan removed, without removing power steering pump, is there enough space to remove the alternator?

If I remember correctly there are just the two bolts in the top. The bottom just slides in.

No, you still have to move the power steering pump out of the way.

Great video and thanks! I’m in this situation and got a new battery and after a few short drives, it died on me. Do it looks like the alternator is bad, but I also found out these fist gen Acura TSXs have a battery drain problem and they you need to remove the Bluetooth connection. I did that and the car starts, but I don’t want to drive my car until I find out the alternator is bad and don’t want to get stranded again. I think everyone should disconnect the Bluetooth bc it drains the battery, regardless of a bad alternator or not. The Bluetooth may have damaged or over worked the alternator and seems like a common issue with these early Acuras.

get a voltage meter and test at the battery with the car running. You should get a reading of around 13.5-15V. Anything lower is a good indicator that you have a failing alternator. A cheap $7 harbor freight meter would work fine for this.

I took my car to where I bought the new battery for a free alternator test. They told me the alternator was failing. I also bought one of those cheap voltage meters to be able to check the voltage on my own in the future. Thanks!

@@jacknjill3000 No problem! Luckily alternators are pretty easy to replace in tsx. There is no need to move the power steering pump. Just disconnect the hose and move it out of the way. Removing the passenger side fan will make it much more accessible..Takes 2 mins to remove.. OEM would probably be best but i replaced mine with a duralast 2 years ago with no issues.

I’m going to buy a remanufacture OEM alternator from eBay for about $100. and thanks for the tip. One Ebay dealer had one listed for the TSX 06 for $96.00. They had the same remanufacture alternator model # 13980 for $77.00 and almost $20. cheaper. That’s a little sneaky and I guess if they list under Acura TSX, they figure it would be priced more, even if it’s the same part. Someone also complain that their alternator was not a good remanufacture, so I better be careful. Also, many complained that they didn’t respond to messages and hard and get a hold of this Ebay seller. So many ppl. not acting right and I don’t like and need those headaches.

Most things listed on Ebay as remanufactured are just used and not remanufactured at all.

If you need someone to show you how to remove two bolts out of three. Then I'd suggest taking your car to a dealership.
