Hi, friends. In a recent comment, I stated that I recently realized that I’m an ‘alto.’ So, for 33 years (while attempting and not succeeding in a higher range- “Omg, I can’t reach Whitney’s high notes… I must suck.) I am relieved to find this fantastic Alto Vocal Warm-Up. I am now working on my own music, as well as doing covers which sound better in my range. (The Carpenters, Toni Braxton, Joan Jett, and other songs I can find in a lower key. Thank you for opening my eyes!!

Hi this is a super old video so idk if you’ll even see this, but I just want you to know this video is in my liked videos and I am constantly going back to it because of how helpful it is for me. As a singer because I am not ever in choir doing organized vocal warm ups anymore, but even if it’s not for singing this video does wonders. It helps soothe my overall speaking voice when it’s a little wacky and doing the video even if I’m not gonna see is SO grounding and always makes me feel so good after. & I love hip hop so this warm up is even more fun for me than any choir warm ups because of the drums and cool melodies you chose!!! This is great! Starting to use this video everyday as warm ups for my voice. I’m definitely a soprano singer but wanted to find something to help strengthen my lower register that wasn’t too difficult and straining on my voice, and although most of these I can reach, there are definitely a few weak notes. I like how it doesn’t just throw you into the deep end, but rather gradually introduces lower notes as the exercises progress. Hoping to see some development in my lower register overtime :)
@joebloggs6194 жыл бұрын
I have a 4 octave voice range of but very extreme high or low notes are weak. Extreme high soprano notes are weak and inflexible but not too demanding but extreme alto low notes, though weak and hard to pitch accurately are not uncomfortable, just very physically demanding and I run outof puff singing alto, which I prefer for modern music, keeping the bright soprano range for serious classical music. I wantto develop this low range I only recently discovered I have but didn't know where to start. These exercises might be a good place to start. Thank you.
@catteadams5 жыл бұрын
Very good exercises. I especially like the scale that is more pentatonic. Less boring. And anyone who sings, as a profession would probably say the same thing.. Why not teach a scale that's interesting while we warm up? This is not a criticism, I've always wondered why vocal coaches don't do that. When I go to a guitar lesson yes, we go over some basics but then it's about stretching the learning muscle. So, my real point is, if you made videos like that, I'd buy them. Truly would. Why not do some church lines, or a bebop line or a blues scale for instance? Hey, did I just discover a way to amortize a youtube channel foe me? I may have. LOL. Great job anyway you all! You nailed this range. Oh, and thank you for doing this. For free! I smell a pro channel coming up. And Many say they are but then you listen to them and it's the same old thing. Basically Seth Rigs major scales that vary in how you shape the vowel or placement. Those channels are even more annoying. They're gonna tell me their secrets? LOL That never happens.
@joebloggs6194 жыл бұрын
Seth Rigg's original vocal training method is excellent. I don't bother with those who just imitate his training method in a slightly altered guise. I have a 4 octave vocal range and, coming from a European background, my mother taught me the ancient Bel Canto method the great Italian opera singers used, which is fine for serious classical music, which I love. But I also love to jump across genres and sing anything from heavy rock to girly Motown style music in small groups.(but hate "choir" stuff). A good guitarist boyfriend once taught me the position of C major scale in first position on guitar and from there, I bought an ancient Italian classical guitar manual in a junk shop, figured out the music and taught myself classical guitar (much harder than piano!). But despite being able to play and sing classical stuff,or pretty folksy stuff, I couldn't do any other styles I also liked eg heavy modern rock, blues, jazz etc. Until I met another man who showed me how to play modern stuff with just three chords and a sense of rhythm. Totallydifferent from classical stuff,more creative, freer. I was hooked, though I still love the discipline of classical music. There are methods to teach you modern guitar technique but virtually nothing that teaches you how to sing inmodernstyles, which is typically done in alto voice for female vocalists because, with the exception of types like Suzi Quatro rocking in a high soprano and a few other rarities who can pull of such an act, females withjigh girlie soprano voices sound crappy and boring singing modern stuff, other than perhaps folksy styles or in girlie type gtoups which, once you've heard one you've heard them all, because Dians Ross and Supremes and similar 60's girlie groups would be a hard act for this era's girlie groups to follow. They did it all, the final, definitive girlie group acts. Now, if you must know the pentatonic and blues scales and similar weird scales and modes eg the Phrygian for flamenco, Dorian modal scale etc gor jazz, how come there is nothing to teach singers to ding in these weird scales and modes, since a lot of non classical music uses them? And also strange time signatures etc. I tried singing them using manuals designed for other instruments, not vocals. It was a weird experience but very creatively exciting and new. You have to completely readjust your thinking if classically trained and therefore very rigid and disciplined. Most are too inflexible to make this transition, just as most modern musicians lack the discipline and control needed to do classical music well and find it "too hard" eg can't sing that high, can't stretch fingers that far or fast on an instrument like guitar or piano etc. But, surely, if artistry is basically about mastering your craft and technique well, true creativity is about being flexible and mentally agile enough to express anything in the most appropriate style. Apart from Bohemian rhapsody, I know of no other "rock opera" stuff but some modern music, especially very big, epic stuff, like heavy metal type themes lends itself to certain classical treatments, with full symphony orchestras, operatic vocalists etc. And some frivolous classical songs could easily be done in a modern pop style. If one is innovative enough and not "artistically prejudiced", as most musicianscand singers are. Which means we end ip with very boring classical music and very trashy modern music, both due to a combination of lack of craft and technique for modern musicians/singers and lack of mental, creative flexibility in excellent classically trained musicians/singers. Som modern singing methods would help break this down. Seth Riggs is the only disciplined orderly modern singing method I know of. It works. For all styles. But classical singers treat it with contempt and modern singers give their usual complaints, like "so many boring exercises" or "it goes so high/so low" etc. But, if you want to be a great athlete or ballet dancer, you must train, to build up muscles and flexibility. Ditto for singers and musicians. A proper training schedule/method greatly improves chances of success.Someone needs to write a modern one for singers that uses all these unusual scales, harmonies and chord progressions.

Aussie Vocal Coach and Cheryl Porter are my favourite teachers online (so far as I might find more!) but anyway if Ian is watching this you know what I would love if he would be obliged is for him to teach the piano keys slower and then faster with all these so I can learn the keys on the piano as I can't figure out where my range is...as I know I sit good in Tenor but also can do a bit of Alto and even go lower sometimes into the bass...not Nina Simone low (at least not yet) but anyway if I could learn the keys then I could do that and watch where I am the most comfortable to where I am the most challenged by taking time to do on piano. Also if he then would load up both piano playing and singing ....but if he not both then would just love to see the videos of the piano keys to learn.

@@aussievocalcoach Thank you! You are a great teacher and I really love your free videos. I am definitely not like the best singer...but years ago I was in a Pantomime and my musical theatre director was obsessed with Karaoke and she was always inviting anyone from crew who wanted to go so I asked to go one day and it had been years since I had done karaoke. First night I go one of the crew was singing and then another and these guys were like the director and an actor who was also a lounge singer and I was too shy (and I am generally not shy) to try so didn't that night. Second week I went and said to Angie (The Musical Theatre Director) "I give myself permission to sing badly" and she cheered for that and gave me a high five. Over time the group of us changed to fit my boyfriend over it and then over time the group moved away and it was just my bf and I and then it was not happening for some time so bf and I just did phone karaoke but I found a few things helped. Finding people that made slow and reverbed videos and just really listening to those a few times. Surprisingly telling myself to sing a whole song deliberately off key and then recording it and finding that I strangely hit some keys so now I knew the difference from hearing within my ears while singing and with my ears to a recording. Also just having fun. And then over time deliberately throwing myself into different genres but these are things I did mostly on own. The other thing that really helped was finding your tenor warm up. I am a girl but I was in the pantomime the other musical director (in charging of singing) found a small group of us that she asked to do Tenor because she heard we could all do Tenor and The Tenor was the smallest group because I guess they are the most rare voices? Anyway I was like OMG all that time in elementary school when they put me in Alto but some was not as comfortable as Tenor....and so I love your tenor warm up...it helped. As did Cheryl Porters singing lessons. I am poor so can't afford lessons at a moment. I scrap for change to pay dogs insurance so I really appreciate you doing these videos. The last few weeks the original karaoke host (as she owns the company but as many locations so we end up going to many hosts) was there and she came up to me and said "you keep getting better and better" and then last week I had someone tell me and this was a first, as I have had mixed opinions on my voice with being called good bad and okay but this woman said "you are a fantastic singer" and I was so happy as I chose "The Music of the Night" from Phantom as my first song that night....and also I feel that was my best rendition. The host was even going to record it but stopped because there was another person so passionate they were singing along but they had a voice pitch I guess that was overriding my timing. Anyways I have only gotten the last "night" of the song once or come close to it once. Blah blah blah...yesterday I actually explored like 5 of your free videos and absolutely love doing the pentatonic scales. Thanks for everything you do and one day I hope to perform music of the night so well that I can sing beside Ramin Karimloo!
