THANKS for your great review!! And they're so pretty too!!!!! I've heard this shoe referred to as a Speedgoat killer... I'm thinking maybe it's true!! The Speedgoat also has the Vibram outsole but is extremely useless in even thin slippery mud (Lee Runs Ultras called it the Slipgoat!!😂), plus it has a kinda pointy toebox so I had to get a slightly bigger size, and though that's great in summer must admit, it's no good for lots of steep descents!! However, I have heard some sad even shocking stories for the durability of both shoes!!🤷🏻♀

Thank you! I’m loving the color, too, it screams WEAR ME! It could well be true - Speedgoat 5 is the other trail running shoes I rate the highest, I wouldn’t call this a killer because they’re both great shoes but the great fit on the Timp 5 does give it the edge for me. We’ll be reviewing the Speedgoat 6 soon so it will be interesting to see what HOKA has done with it!

Since you are the only person I know that has run in both the Timp 5 and the Topo Pursuit 2's can you tell me which one you prefer and why? Specifically looking for the difference in those two in regards to the following: Which one is more rocker like, which one is more responsive, which one has better ground feel and which one you feel is the better race day shoe. Thank you so much.
@trailandkale7 ай бұрын
The Timp 5 edges the win for me. Neither has much of a rocker, just a little at the toe. The Pursuit 2 is more responsive, it has less cushioning and is more similar to the Lone Peak 8 in that regard as well as the toe box width. For race day it depends on the race length and how highly you value the cushioning. For a long half /30k+ distance I’d go with the Timp, especially if it’s rocky. That said, if you will be running forests and softer ground, or just shorter distances then you could enjoy the Pursuit 2 more for that type of running.

@@trailandkale Thank you this reply. I actually just decided to order both and find out. They seem so close. I think the Pursuit would have been the go to if Altra had not updated to Vibram as well. One more question, and maybe you didn't test this on either one, but which one do you think would drain/dry faster?
@trailandkale7 ай бұрын
I expect they’re going to be quite similar for drainage, based on the mesh used in the uppers. Would love to hear what you think once you’ve tried them both, too!

@@trailandkale I received and tested them both and returned the Timp 5's this morning. I think most of your assessment is spot on, the Timp 5's would be the faster shoe for running smooth fire roads and has a bit more cushioning...but not that much to be honest. Both have much more cushion and response than the Lone Peak 7's that I compared them too. The Topo felt far more like an Altra than the Timp did. Much roomier toe box, less of a rocker, more ground feel. The Pursuit also has a much more grippy outsole with the Vibram Mega Grip, deeper lugs and stickier rubber. I also am intrigued by the Topo insole that is designed to get wet. In the end, I feel like I got much more control, grip and feel in the Topo with only slightly less cushioning. Considering I often run wet, technical, break your ankle type of trails, the Topo's won this one. FWIW, I compared the Magnfily 5 with the Escalante 4 and the Escalantes won out and I compared the Cyclone 2 to the Experience Flow and the Experience Flow's won out. So far its, Altra-2 and Topo -1

Thanks for the review! :) are these trainers good for runners with fallen arches?
@trailandkale3 ай бұрын
Thanks! These shoes don't have any special support in the arch area - you would probably be better off with a pair that have more stability features, such as the Salomon Genesis for trails: www.trailandkale.com/shoe-reviews/salomon-genesis-review/ or if you want them for road running, here's our stability road running shoes roundup: www.trailandkale.com/gear/best-stability-running-shoes/

Excitedly unboxed my new Timp 5’s today, took them on an 8 mile trail run (short distance for me) and proceeded to develop a blister on my right little toe, but not my left and yes, the shoe was the correct size with the perfect amount of space beyond my big toe. Never had any other model of Altra cause this problem before so I sent them back. Maybe they just made the toe box smaller on this model, but either way…I need a shoe that I can run very long distances in, and the Timp 5 is not that shoe for me
@trailandkale8 ай бұрын
That’s a shame, did you look at adjusting the lacing to see if that helps? The Altra Lone Peak 8 has a wider toe box but a little less cushioning. You could also look at the Topo Pursuit 2, which I recently published a review of, too.
