Ok, Here is another interesting experiment. What happens when you mix aluminum powder with stump remover, potassium nitrate? it creates a very bright and energetic chemical reaction, when lit on fire! I go through the steps of weighting out the chemicals, and lighting them on fire! definitely a very interesting chemistry experiment!

I don't wish to be a killjoy, but if, for example, you don't know the difference between aluminium and dark aluminium and are surprised when Al and KNO3 doesn't burst into flames, then you really shouldn't be posting videos like this. And grinding the mixed chemicals together is just about the biggest no-no in pyrotechnics. If you do try it with added sulphur you are likely to burn your hand or worse. ALWAYS grind chemicals individually and THEN mix them. And GENTLY! You really need to do a lot more research.

Thanks for the great information.. I guess dark aluminum is finely ground?? I am still learning.. just like all of us.. I actually had a project I was planning to do with thermite.. And another with rocket motors.. these are more of a side project.. to test my chemicals.. Maybe it is because I didn't add sulfur.. that it was difficult to ignite? I will try to be careful.. thanks!!!

@@jaynesnetwork Dark Al is extremely finely ground and so very reactive. But it won't light with just an oxidizer such as KNO3 unless you also add S. But that's not good to store. Safer to use KClO4 (for which we need a licence here in the UK), which is the industry standard for fireworks, but that's still a powerful explosive and serious safety precautions are essential. Videos like yours can encourage amateurs to experiment in ignorance of the very real dangers.

I think others have commented on this, but "real" flash powder is made with Potassium Chlorate or Perchlorate (KCLO3 or KCLO4) and aluminum powder. It's easy to order online, and it makes a world of difference. Potassium Nitrate is great for slower burning pyrotechnics like rocket engines, or your can get explosions by mixing the nitrate with some other accelerants as mentioned, but nothing compares to KCLO4 and aluminum!

Another note on using KN03 and AL for a great flash powder if you can't get KCLO4. I use a formula of 5/3/2 grams of KNO3, AL and S. I've been using the same stump remover you showed, ground to a fine powder. This formula with a pile like you made would have instantly flashed and would just about blind you! The salutes I make with it are nearly as good as Perchlorate salutes, confined in cardboard tubes with hot-glued cardboard end caps.

Actually if you're going to use a potassium nitrate based flash powder you want magnesium powder. That stuff is energetic as hell. One of the things you absolutely never want to use potassium chlorate. Way too sensitive way to powerful extremely dangerous. Chlorate based explosives are just itching to go off right in your face. Potassium chlorate what's first used for making Armstrong powder I think back in the civil war days. That's why you want potassium perchlorate. You could also use ammonium perchlorate. But I have found the safest flash powder is actually potassium nitrate and magnesium no sulphur. Basically the only thing that's going to light that is a fuse what's an extremely energetic flash.

You'll never make a fast flash from KNO3 and aluminum without a few other additions, but you can replace aluminum with fine magnesium or magnalium for a pretty decently fast burning powder, but nowhere near actual flash powder. 10 feet of it spread in a line will burn in about half a second, and it will make a nice deep thud if confined. It really excells at making bright light, it's slower burning than aluminum flash powder (real flash powder, 70/30 KCLO4/Al) but burns longer and brighter, with the added benefit of lacking the danger of unconfined detonation that comes with perchlorate flash. Save your aluminum for perchlorates IMO... And also, kind of a necessity, I'm not making a big deal out of it like others have because of the KNO3 but always grind your ingredients separately, and when mixing any composition with a name involving any word remotely close to "flash", use the diaper method, by placing the ingredients on a sheet of news paper and gently rolling the powder back and forth, side to side by alternately pulling either side of the paper up and down to mix it without friction or static. People have lost fingers, eyes and worse grinding pyro compositions with a mortar and pestle.

@TheExplosiveGuy
@TheExplosiveGuy 7 ай бұрын
@@Sylllllllllll KNO3 flash will make a slow(ish) poof and a flash of light, while KCLO4 flash will be more like a detonation, true flash powder (KCLO4/Al) is a completely different animal than nitrate-based flash, perchlorates are just way better. You can still make salutes with KNO3 but your firework casings must be made very strong to build up enough pressure to make a good bang, if it's all you have access to then go for it, but if at all possible I would suggest trying to find KCLO4, it's just that much better.

Mass ratio Al/KNO3 (w/w) = 0.44, allow me to demonstrate: 10Al + 6KNO3 -> 6KAlO2 + 2Al2O3 + 3N2, m.w. Al = 26.98, KNO3 = 101.10, 10(26.98) / 6(101.10) = 269.82/606.62 = 0.44, therefore 0.44x + x = 1, so 1.44x = 1, and x = 0.69, then back substitute for x: 0.44(0.69) + 0.69 = 1, or 0.31g Al + 0.69g KNO3 = 1.00g kaboom powder. Checking 0.31g • 26.98g/mol = 0.0115 mol Al, 0.69g • 101.10g/mol = 0.0069 mol KNO3, which is about a 10/6 mole ratio (with some rounding error). CHEMISTRY MATH IS NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART! Side note: 2Al + KCLO3 -> Al2O3 + KCl, which is simpler rxn that allows the angry pixies to rearrange faster, which is why potassium chlorate is a better oxidizer than the nitrate. Enjoy.

If you do use sulfur, don't grind the mix, grind each chemical separately. You can use a cheap coffee grinder, use 3 different ones, no fuel is being ground with the oxidizer. If you were to try and grind this mix it's going to ignite, almost without fail, the sulfur is what does this, or makes it much more likely, if using KNO4 , it will always go off with friction. This stuff is a bunch of fun, but you have to be extremely careful, some of the stuff on KZbin scares me to hell and back, some mixtures are better off not being made, others are great fun, I totally agree with you, a bit of sulfur would make the ignition temp much lower. Sorry for the rant, I was cringing when he was grinding that stuff, knowing what potassium percolate + dark aluminum powder is capable of, I had some comfort that he was using potassium nitrate instead, but still, aluminum powder is highly reactive as it is, when ball milling it's easy to get a out of control spontaneous combustion from oxidation after the barrel is first opened, magnesium metal is highly reactive, I found that out the hard way, lol. Just be careful all. Good advice from you to add sulfur, but please do not ever grind an oxidizer with a fuel supply, so much can go so wrong, and this is supposed to be fun and educational, so I hate to sound like a broken record, but safety first please. Take care my fellow Freemen.

All chems are milled separately and and mixed on kraft paper when the comp is flash. I do see there is fun in experiments but flash is one witch has had many.

Warning to everybody watching, please never ever mix flash powder with a grinding method or a ball mill , you run a serious risk of going boom. Also, potassium nitrate is not the go-to oxidizer for making flash, do more research..... Edit.... Honestly nothing personal dude but this video should be pulled down.

Your are correct.. It is probably much better for our children to watch things like Beyonce twerking her Butt.. and transvestites like Ke$ha inspiring our younger generation to get into substance abuse.. There are so many other things our kids could be doing, instead of learning science and expanding their minds! Thanks for the great comments!!

The problem you're having is with the fineness of the aluminum, you can order pyro grade aluminum off the internet for relatively cheaply. One thing to remember is that flash powder is considered an explosive by some regulatory agencies, and therefore could be a felony. I use a copper oxide based thermite with a mix of aluminum and magnesium powder and some potassium nitrate because that's not strictly speaking "flash powder" but it has a nearly identical effect in the right ratios. Weather that would fly in court or not I couldn't say but it could at least give you ground to stand on. Do some more research, and understand that the stuff you're working with can be very sensitive to friction and static electricity. Always assume whatever you're working with is more dangerous than it is, because it just might be. If you have any questions DM me.

@@patman0250 your talking Chlorate/phosphorus mix correct? In my tests it's been a lot more static and friction sensitive then the flash mixes I've worked with, especially the copper oxide based flash I mentioned. Chlorate in general is harder to come by for me as well. I'm not discounting your opinion, you may well know something I don't, but I've never seen Armstrong's mix to be as viable as flash in my applications.
