i'll never forget how Stephen Curry was also statistically the Most Improved Player in 2016. he was already mvp from the previous season, and became even better compared to everyone else in the league. the only reason they didnt give the award to him was because apparently the award wasnt for players who were already doing great before the year they improved? i lost the thread of the issue, but there were articles and media cycles about it.

Only thing I would change is Westbrook moving from S to A tier. I think his MVP was heavily based on narrative (losing KD, carry job, averaging a triple double) as it didn't fit traditional standards, while also his competition had some legitimate, near-equal arguments (Rockets had a higher seed, almost averaged a triple double as well, doing it "by himself" as well after leaving the Thunder years before). For a S-tier rank I think the player's season had to be a league above everyone else who could possibly be in consideration. But I understand his placement and how it was reasoned.

Russ was a league above everyone else in that season. Give Westbrook a team that actually suits his playing style and he would of averaged 35/10/15 on great efficiency and the proof of that is when he played with the Rockets. The 2020 Rockets team suited him better than any other team and that turned into one of his best seasons of his career until he got injured. Put 2017 Westbrook on the 2017 Rockets and 2017 Harden on the 2017 Thunder and the Rockets would be a Top 3 seed while the Thunder would miss the playoffs. People seriously don’t realise how bad that Thunder team was, it’s an actual miracle they even won 40 games let alone 47.

He was and the team helped him. Steven Adams would box out and let the ball even bounce to let Russ get rebounds. You can stat pad and be great at the same time. Both things can be true. LeBron James stat pads. He does it differently. LeBron plays big minutes in even games that his teams have been blown out in. Players are conscious of stats. If they aren't conscious someone from the organization or a teammate will let them know. Even Giannis did an embarrassing stunt for a triple-double a couple weeks ago. Stat padding is real and Russ absolutely did it.

The way they did harden was really messed up. Especially the 2019 MVP. Harden lost CP3, Eric Gordon, and capela for most of the season. Which was why he had to have such an insane carry job. And they had to literally get guys who were about to quit and were in the g-league who played major minutes. Giannis clearly deserved the 2020 MVP, but Harden genuinely deserved the 2019 MVP more.

Sports need to change their rules on the MVP. The real MVP should be the best player on the Championship Winning team. And I would have 3 MVPs every year: Gold, Silver & Bronze Silver would either be the second best player on the Championship team if the Champs had a dynamic duo or the best player on the losing team in the Finals (not just the Finals series, but the face of the team) Bronze would be a debate whether the best in the regular season versus the face of the loser Finals But if it's like Warriors vs Cavs it'll be like Steph Bron and KD are the only candidates.

If we don’t include the postseason and only their regular season from the last 10 winners 1. Stephen Curry 2k16 (73-9, 30ppg on insane efficiency, greatest offensive season of all time) 2. LeBron James 2k13 (67 wins, elite two way player, robbed of DPOY) 3. Nikola Jokic 2k22 (historic advanced stats, was great offensively at efficiency, playmaking and carried his team without a true 2 option.) 4. Giannis Antetokounmpo 2k20 (elite two way player, 1 seed, won DPOY, better then his 1st mvp) 5. Kevin Durant 2k14 (elite scoring, efficiency, carried OKC as a 2 seed in the tough west w/o Westbrook most of that season) 6. Giannis Antetokounmpo 2k19 (elite two way player, first seed in the East, great first mvp season) 7. James Harden 2k18 (elite scoring/playmaking season, 1st seed over the KD-Steph Warriors, proved people wrong that he and CP3 could co-exist together) 8. Russell Westbrook 2k17 (historic triple double season that Oscar did generations ago, had a winning record with those tripe doubles, efficiency was low and the turnovers were bad, but still greatly earned having carried the team) 9. Nikola Jokic 2k21 (great offensive numbers from his scoring, playmaking and efficiency, was the most healthy player that season) 10. Stephen Curry 2k15 (underrated efficient year from Steph, great scorer, excellent playmaking and led the team to 67 wins.

The only MVP I disagree w on this list is the Russ one rly. I would’ve rather seen it go to Harden or Kawhi for sure. SAS 2nd in net rating, HOU 3rd. OKC 11th. Outperformed their win loss by 4 games, they were rly a 43 win team that won 47 to get the 6th seed. MEM won 43g as 7 seed, POR 41 as 8 (that was the year of the win or go home game I think in DEN’s final game, they lost, 40-42 9 seed) meanwhile OKC was 8 wins back of HOU, 14 of SAS. OKC +0.8 net rating, MEM +0.6, DEN +0.5. POR made the playoffs with a -0.5 net rating. Just to show how they barely made the playoffs, and how far back they were from others in West…UTA +4.3, LAC +4.5, HOU +5.7, SAS +7.6, GSW +11.6. So they were barely the 6, not CLOSE to 5. Meanwhile two other West teams were within 0.3. Also 20th in TS%, 10th in defensive rating (surely Russ was contributing there) and 16th in offensive rating. Shout out to Oladipo, Roberson, Jerami Grant, Steven Adams, etc. I guess it’s nice when you have by far your best 3P shooting season, by far most FTA, career high FT% that fell 20% in the next two seasons, etc. That all came together to have his an amazing 55.4% TS, tied for his career high w prior yr, then never hit even 54% TS again. If you want to talk about inefficient shot chuckers at least get the right guy. He was 57.6% at the rim, his worst since his first two yrs in the league, hasn’t been that low again. He took a lotttt of midrange jumpers, about 34% of his FGA were from 10-16 and 16-3. 43.4% 10-16, not bad. 34.5% 16-3. My lord that’s about as bad as it gets. Didn’t take many from 3-10ft but 30.5% from there, obv abysmal. The reason he won that MVP was an outlier 3P shooting season (career high % on career high volume, if he shoots 34.3% again on 7.2att, which is still below avg, well let’s just say I’d bet a lot against that, same w him ever getting close to 84.5% FT on even 5att let alone 10.4) from 3P, outlier FTA on career FT%, and that got him to BARELY an efficiency that was justifiable to vote for him bc of the triple doubles. Imagine Jr shoots like 31% 3P that year, gets a cpl less FTs, or shoots a bit worse from FT? It’d prolly be the worst TS% to win an MVP…like…ever. League average TS% that year was 54.1%. Next yr 55.2%. Then 55.6%, 56%, 56.3%, 57.2%. You have to go back to the 1970s since it was 53% or below consistently for years. 1998-04 it was more around 52% or so, but beside that, it’s been at least 53%+ since 1979-80 w plenty of 54%+ years. Around 06-07 or so it hit 53.6%, and was mostly in the 54s til 17-18 it was 55.2%, 55.6%, 56%, 56.3%, 57.2%. Not sure what it is this year so far. So he put together his most outlier year shooting possible and ended up slightly 1% over average. Bad defense, we know he was stat padding triple doubles, but Harden w 8 more wins, like 6% higher TS, led the league in winshares, similar counting stats just infinitely more efficient, led the league in total assts & APG, and actually had 22 triple doubles (2nd) without stat padding rebounds. If you want the best offensive player on a team with a ton of wins, Harden was there. If you wanted the best two way player on a team with the best defensive rating, second best net rating, 61 wins, etc. you had Kawhi. No slouch on offense either. 25.5/5.8/3.5/1.8/0.7. 74GS, 33.4MPG. 38% 3P on 5.2att, 52.9% 2P on 12.5att, 88% FT on 7.2att. That’s 61% TS on 31.1% USG while guarding opponents best player. Efficient from all 3 levels. All DEF 1st team, had won DPOY prior 2yrs. 3rd in DPOY that yr. If you wanted LBJ, he was 2nd in the East, behind BOS by 2g. LBJ played 74G and 37.8MPG in his age 32 season. 26.4/8.6/8.7/1.2. 62% TS on 30% USG. Mostly just took shots at the rim and 3s. He was 78% at rim, 36.3% 3P on 4.6att, led league in minutes per game. Tied w Russ with 498/500 points for All-NBA. Harden had 500/500. He was 3rd in triple doubles w 13. 5th in ASST%. Or you can go w old fashioned best player on best team w Steph. He had the MVP votes over KD by far. They went 67-15. +11.6 net rating. 1st in offensive rating, 2nd in defensive rating. 79GS, 33.4MPG. 25.3/4.5/6.6/1.8 41.1% 3P on 10att. 53.7% 2P on 8.3att. 89.8% FT on 4.6att. That’s a solid 62.4% TS on 30.1% USG. I would’ve been fine with Harden, Kawhi or LBJ really. Steph feels bleh bc he has KD on his team putting up extremely similar #s. But there’s no way Russ should’ve won that MVP. I think voters get it right 9/10 times, and I can’t blame them. They thought the triple double record wouldn’t be broken. If only they listened to the nerds telling them if LBJ wanted to average a triple double he could easily. Nobody rly cared about averaging one until Russ did it. Luckily the triple double craze died off after less than a year really. Russ got an MVP out of it tho.

I don't care what anyone says. Harden should've won the MVP in 2019. Averaging 36 and in a high seeded team in the tougher conference is way more impressive than a guy averaging 8 less points in an easier conference.
