this could be wrong, but i think the “so did i for an eye” part is the singer looking for an eye like her old lovers, one that she could care for as much as she did for the old lover.

I believe it's a play on words , with the word eye sounding the same as the letter I. So it may be you sought an "I" so did I for an island , with one wanting to be alone and not in a relationship. Finally seeing it for the sham it is, trading my rose colored shades for a wide lens
