(Susanna Wesley to her son) I do believe it is also a matter of personal conscience and natural inclinations. For example, my friend is a an alcoholic so its a big no to even take a sip (one bottle leads to more, re awakens the addiction) but there are also others who can drink and don't get drunk and have no problem. My personal struggles are video games and movies, similar to yours.

I believe the Wise Virgin has spoken well and that if we look at her comment in reverse order, she has answered your question biblically; God is sovereign, the regenerated are those who believe/trust/love God. But how do we know? We are stubborn, but the Bible is clear; if you believe in your heart, and profess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord you have passed from death into life i.e. regenerated. For no one can say Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit, and believe it from the heart. I profess no special ability to understand, but strive to understand and believe what the Lord has said. May God bless you and all who seek after God with a sincere heart, it is a wonderous gift: "Let the heart of them rejoice who seek the Lord."

Yes, you are very correct. In order to live according to God's principles, we have to learn what those principles are. " Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." (2 Timothy 2:15). "This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success." (Joshua 1:8). When we understand the gospel, and pray for the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:26), to dwell in us and guide us (Psalms 143:10), it will take away the iniquities mentioned in Galatians 5:19-21, physically and spiritually,y and make us new people in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17). I can totally relate to this questions, as I’ve felt like a lukewarm christian for 19 years and listening to many preachers and never really getting it. This past year everything changed. Here’s what I was missing: true repentance. I’ve heard the gospel from Ray Comfort, he basically walks people through the 10 commandments, and I went through them. I have lies before, I have stolen before, I have taken God’s name in vain (OMG), Jesus said if you look at someone with lust you have committed adultery in your heart, and if you hate someone you have committed murder. So by examining myself, I realized that I was a lying, thieving, blasphemous, adulterer and murderer at heart. You see I realized that I am a wretched sinner. Now here’s the deal, God will punish all sin, otherwise he is not a just God, he never lets sin slide, but here’s the kicker, either we will pay, or Jesus already paid. That is the good news! That Jesus took the punishment I deserved, that we deserved, but we must repent! and put our trust in him. Again, we must repent and put our trust in him. Merely “accepting Jesus into your heart” is not salvation, you don’t see that in the Bible. Jesus said in Luke 13, repent or you too will all likewise perish.” 2Tim 2:19 says let all those who call on the name of Christ depart from iniquity”. Repentance is a change of mind about sin! If we rack up a stack of speeding tickets and someone pays it for us and saves us from jail time, are we going to keep speeding? If you are one of those that keeps speeding, then you don’t love your savior, but if you then find yourself in sorrow over your speeding, and pick up your cross and committ yourself to not speed again, and grieve when you speed, then you truly understand what the savior did. It is a desire to not speed, that is what it means to be a new creature! (Ok now replace speeding with sinning). Repentance is what a lot of people who think themselves saved is what they are missing, I know I was one of them!

One more thing I forgot to mention, was that I’ve started reading my Bible daily. I hunger for it, and it is the way to know God and Christ. And the more I read it the more I started noticing false teachings. I’ve been listening to false teachers for years that I thought were solid christians. Here’s a tell tell sign you may be listening to a false teacher: they never preach on: the Fear of the Lord, sin and the severity of it, God’s wrath, God’s sovereignty and how he allows evil to exist and happen, hell, how apart from Christ we are destined to go to hell and rightfully so. False teachers never talk about sin, and cuddle people in their sin, they preach on prosperity, on sowing seeds, on God telling them things not found in the Bible, on losing control like people falling down and shaking or laughing uncontrollably (note one of the fruits of the Spirit is self control), they also attack the deity of Christ saying that he was just a man, on fake healings or sowing seeds to be healed, and their preaching is full of personal anecdotes and not focused on God’s Word. Unfortunately it would be difficult for anyone to tell false teachers unless you yourself get immersed in the Word. Remember that Jesus said they look like sheep, but inside they are ravenous wolves.

The problem of a weak memory is a problem of low morality. Being led by passions and not the truth to help flee from sin. Jesus said...Those who have ears let them hear. I was one of those weak women. I had to pick up my cross and regardless of how weak my memory was carry it day. My emotional, mental, physical and spiritual health became stronger. I have a problem similar to something like this, but it goes a bit deeper to the point it becomes overwhelming. Like the parable of the sower, I a a seed that is all fired up with faith and m love for God, but is immediately torn down with quick swiftness. Anxiety plagues my heart every passing second(literally) giving me no chance to breathe any sort of peace, but keep me fearing God because of my weakness. I learn and retain, but the things I learn cannot fight the uncertainty that bombs my mind question after question. I'm unable to leave things at the Lord's feet because if you know anxiety, it sometimes stems from nothing at all and creates an issue from everything all at once. I know I truly love the Lord, but I feel as if I do not know enough to truly say anything like that. I know I am saved, but it feels as if my flesh wants to reject the word and live in the darkness and confusion it has built for itself. I feel for my soul. It must suck being trapped within something that refuses to be STILL. Lord have mercy.

I am so sorry you are going through this. Not knowing you I can only give my best attempt to maybe help you. This sounds like the devil is harrassing you. Your battle is a spirirual one. I would ask a pastor and elders of your church to lay hands on you and pray for you. Some spirits can only come out by prayer Mark 9:29. And maybe fast for a day asking God to rid you of your anxiety. Think of it this way, fasting lets Him know your serious about what you are asking for. I hate to think of you living this way any longer it sounds pike torture. I prayed for you. Big hugs and know you are not fighting this alone! I will pray for you.

@@Chide_Nkem fasting can be done in various ways. The last time I fasted I did a whole day fast about a need my family had. And God answered it!! But His answer was 4 months later. And it was huge. Anyway, I started at breakfast on a day I was home all day. I asked God to take my hunger away that day and I was able to fast 24 hours. I prayed for my soecific need and asked God to pleaae hear my cry. I prayed using Bible verses and professing my trust to Him. ❤ And He did answer. If you want more detailed explanation I will give you my email. I just hate to think of you suffering with no one praying. Anxiety has bern a thorn in my side so I know how debilitating this can be and I don't want satan to hold you back from future blessings and purpose. Hang in there it can get better!

I'm writing this for Amy.. Around 4.30 minutes into the video Pastor John talks about being "led by truth"". Paul never never tells us to be "led by truth". What Paul teaches is that we are to be "led by the Spirit". ( Romans 8.14, Galatians 5.18 ). What I believe this scripture is addressing is being taught by the Holy Spirit. Jesus himself told his disciples just before he was going away "Howbeit when He the Spirit of Truth is come He will guide you into all truth..." (John 16.13) When the Holy Spirit teaches us it is on a much deeper level than when man teaches us. The Holy Spirit not only instructs our mind but He enlightens our heart. The Holy Spirit teaches us in a way that we don't easily forget. 1 John 2. 27 confirms this... "But the anointing which you have received of him abides in you and you need not that any man teach you, for as the same anointing teaches you of all things and is the truth, even as it has taught you, ye shall abide in him." You may have arrived at a place in your Christian walk that it's time to look to the Holy Spirit as your teacher. You will not find a more excellent teacher than the Holy Spirit... Not the focus what so ever but it’s encouraging to know that someone like John Piper is like me in terms of learning / memory. As we can be sure that 1+1 = 2 (objective truth, if you also believe in that) so one can be sure of his own salvation. For God has not left us alone in this dark and confusing world. And for that very reason Christ came in this world to show us the "Way, The Truth and The Life" which is He Himself, that He is God and He cares for us. In which He has climactically proven in His death and Resurrection. I can tell you first that Christ is indeed God there's no doubt about it. But your question is about "being sure about your own salvation(sure of self)" The key here is not to trust in yourself, to not look on who you are, and on your own performance. (things done and doing) It is to look to Christ, on what He has done, on who He is, that is: "He has saved you from your sins, there is no more condemnation." (Romans 8:1) that "Whenever our hearts condemn us, know that The Lord is greater than our hearts and He knows even greater than we know ourselves" (1 John 3:20) "Is it possible to be mistaken?" Yes it is impossible to find certainty and peace on our own (I also have greatly struggled struggled with morbid introspection) for ultimately it can only be possible with God and by God. We need God as we dive in to the complexity of our self.(In knowing oneself) to be the guiding light and testing stone. In the 1 epistle of John he addresses that very issue "I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life." (1 John 5:13) Christ came that we may be sure. Conclusion is this: "By myself alone I will always be mistaken. I will find no certainty on my own self evaluation and will never do so, yet all these self doubts, pain and misery that I deserved. God saw them all, knew them all and forgave them all." Put your trust in Him, in His firm words of love and forgiveness He has concretely proven in the Cross. For He alone is perfect, sovereign above all thoughts and feelings, everlasting, never mistaken and all-knowing. This has been quite a long reply and perhaps be lacking on the answer you're looking for but I hope you've read and understood. I am not trying to assert this to you for in the end its your choice to believe in this also. Jesus said, “If you believed in me, you’d listen to me.” Pride keeps us from submitting, which is why humility is such an important byproduct of faith. As for you and your wife, there are many key points there: first of all, you’re not the only one. Countless couples struggle with what you described. Second, God has not abandoned your relationship with your wife which means there is hope. Third, the natural enmity between men and women is real. I told a friend who had your same struggle this advice: Give it a month-a month of loving your wife unconditionally. A month of cherishing her. A month of forgiveness. No matter what. He came back to me a month later to tell me that they decided not to divorce and were now considering having kids. He came back a year later and told me that the divorce would soon be finalized. After loving his wife and cherishing her, he also uncovered the reason why he married her in the first place along with things that he had done that haunted him with guilt. He wanted a fresh start and he realized that she deserved one too. Going back to submission, submission is the foundation of marriage (and all human relationships). As we grow in submission to God, we grow in submission to others, but as we struggle to submit to others, we will struggle to submit to God.

bravoman Ignore that guy. He’s been copying and pasting that same thing for years... What you say about an abusive childhood is what I meant about finding out why a person married in the first place. Many of your decisions were based on that abusive childhood, not only in regard to marriage. Your suffering stems from that childhood. How does God play into that? Well, the good news is, although you were basically spiritually orphaned, you have a loving father in God. When a person feels “unloved,” it is difficult to feel loved as an adult. They often feel unworthy of love or incapable of love or feel like, “This is life.” I have struggled with the same feelings to a degree. I had to come to terms with my childhood. I think yours was worse than mine, but when I did come to terms with it, I didn’t find blame for God there. What I found is that sin is real, that circumstances are real, yet despite that reality, God’s love is constant. His grace is constant. His arms remain extended open just as much for me as they remain extended open for the drug addict or the crappy parent or whoever else. To enter his arms, there was a lot I had to deal with first. I learned to deal with it with him. Not everyone can overcome their pasts. Going to my parents was fruitless. They are just human, just products of their circumstances too. I had to transcend my circumstances.

bravoman Right... God won’t say that actually. That’s your childhood telling you that, not God. What does God actually say? He says, “My grace is enough.” He says, “I sent my son. He has suffered the same as you. He understands you.” Your childhood might lie to you and say you’re worthy of hell but not God. There is an amen to be found in your struggle-the feelings you have means God hasn’t abandoned you. There are plenty of others who feel nothing but not you. You care. There is an amen in your thoughts to just “end it all,” because that means there is still a hope in you. You just don’t know how to make that hope manifest, which is where the despair comes from. Making that hope manifest starts with coming to terms with your childhood, with your father. Letting that go. Letting that stop dictate your life so that God can. You can’t serve two masters right? That’s what you’ve been doing thus far-serving God while serving the pain of the past. I know the feeling well. I know you feel deep in a spiritual hole at this point after years of serving pain. It might seem too late, but it’s not. Jesus said that he is willing to leave the 99 just for one lost sheep. Why? Because he wants you to live and he believes you are worthy of life and he has joy about the life he has prepared for you. It might seem dark, but there is an amen in that you grew up in these circumstances because only you now can show us how to transcend those circumstances. God gave you that heart to express, and to have depth of emotion for a reason. That tear you shed was just a small manifestation of what God has been trying to draw out of you. He deposited it in you as a child. He cared for it. He watered it. He knew your circumstances would be hard, so he tailored it for you so that you will be able to transcend what seems even impossible right now. But you have to allow him. If you don’t allow him, you can’t blame him for what you won’t let him do. He wants you to live and has supplied the means for you to do so. Allow him... allow him. Get rid of that old master... Let God take over from here.

bravoman “I never was taught...” See? Childhood. It’s not God. Not his punishment. The circumstances you came from led you into this marriage, not God. Now what? Allow God to take over. I don’t know what the result of that will be in regard to your marriage, but I hopeful. Now you have a kid. I can’t sympathize if you make life harder for that kid than what you went through. That’s just hypocrisy right? Then he or she will be taught to be ruled by circumstances too. That’s not fair to the kid. I actually go back to my original statement with a little tweak. Give God a month-a month of letting him rule your life instead of letting the past rule. A month of letting his joy in. A month of prayer. A month of forgiveness and thankfulness. A month of LIFE. You want to end your life but you haven’t lived yet. God is able to make sons of Abraham out of stones, so I certainly know that he is able to do something with your life despite how far off the trail you’ve gone. But again, if you won’t allow him to enter your life, there is nothing more to expect except the same or worse. If you really want to live, allow him in. Let go expectation and watch what he does. I just sense you are not willing and that’s going to be key.

Are you referring to blaspheming against the Holy Spirit as being unforgivable? "This is he who came by water and blood-Jesus Christ; not by the water only but by the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth." 1 John 5:6 ESV So consciously ignoring and speaking against the truth precludes one from being repentant, and without repentance there is no forgiveness.

Ruben C Jesus claiming to be “the truth” is just that...a claim. Even if the claim that he rose from the dead is true, it doesn’t prove divinity. The Bible itself is a book of claims. Little of what it says can be proven empirically or historically. Are my claims legitimate? 2000 different belief systems cannot all be right...and yet they all claim exclusive rights to the “truth”.

(Truth is not subjective, but objective) All of them claims that their way is "true" (even pluralism is in and of itself another claim) They can only be: 1.) All of them(all belief) is wrong 2.) Only one of them is correct. and yes they cannot be all true at the same time for they all fundamentally contradict (as post modernism's/pluralism/subjectivism "nothing is true, you create your own truth" implies) So I ask you to think about this, if no.1 is indeed true then we will be left on our own. "defining good and evil in our own eyes" (The same first lies from Genesis). The result is not tolerance, but of destructive freedom. Nihilism, you can see the consequences of this idea in the Bible in the book of Judges ( where each generation becomes worse, arguably the most gruesome record in the Bible also 19-21) Because "In those days Israel had no king; all the people did whatever seemed right in their own eyes." The people did not accept God's rule (truth), each of them did what is right in their own eyes. The same cycle of descent echoes in our time, example is the Holocaust which is an indirect result of Nihilism. Where men (the Nazis) define the value of human life etc. Truth matters. If God indeed exists, if he really cares, it has to be that he has not left the "true religion" to be buried in lies. He must have preserved it. The question becomes: "Which one of them is true? All of these religions claim that they have evidence that their religion is the true one" Forgive me for its impossible for me and my broken english to go very much into the details of this but I tell you this: I would argue that Christianity has the most evidences of all religions. I would point to the most important, the resurrection of Christ. I must say that if Christ is indeed risen, it would prove that He is indeed God, His claims(He is the only true God, The Creation, Fall, Redemption from sins, Heaven and Hell, Restoration, Judgement etc) would then consequently be true, answering all the problem of humanity. Ruben C Thanks for the references. I’ve seen a lot of what’s available out there from both sides of the argument I.e. atheists and theists. I’ve been at this for many years and I’ve discovered just three truths that apply to every human on the planet. Each is irrefutable enough to stand the test of time and scrutiny of both sides...even from studied professionals. Even those who would like to refute these three have ended up in agreement...not necessarily with me, but with the premises themselves. It’s been suggested that I start a channel using these three as the basis for truth. I probably need to if for no other reason than no one else seems to see them for what they are. I’ve been procrastinating as I already have a full time business. Anyway, thanks for your comments, I will take them into consideration.
