There are a handful of states that have little island nation cities that are nothing like the rest of the state. New York state is, as far as I can tell, a barren wasteland of fields and things, but it contains New York City, which is... well, it's _New York City._ Louisiana, my home state, is a backwoods Republican hick party teeming with raccoons and homophobes, but within it lies the diverse, culturally rich, largely Democrat city of New Orleans. Massachusetts, as we've said, is The Land That Fun Forgot, but then there's MOTHER. FUCKING. PROVINCETOWN. Aside from having a name that makes no fucking sense if you think about it, Provincetown is also THE GAYEST SHOW ON EARTH. If you google its name, the first image that pops up has LGBT flags hanging over the streets. There are posters plastered on the buildings advertising gay strip clubs with names like "Elektric" and "The Wild Side". tl;dr Massachusetts blows goats, but Provincetown is fukken lit.

Coworker taunts "I heard you told this regular 'I love you' hehe?" I just firmly confirm that was the case then stare down the coworker with a neutral expression and they tend to turn away after about 3 uncomfortable seconds.

Reminds me of back when I was 14-16, something like that, and was climbing trees at a local school. One of the teachers came out and started admonishing me about how girls shouldn't climb trees. I basically just started teasing her back that if she didn't like what I was doing, she could come up and lead me down the tree by the hand. After bickering back and forth a bit she demanded to know my name, so I told her. She was dumbstruck for a second and then said "But that's a boy's name!" I replied that, yes, it is. Then she started apologizing about how she had thought I was a girl since I had such long hair and I responded with something like "Yeah, I can tell." In hindsight, (because we always come up with the best retorts many years after it's already way too late and we're not even half as clever when we're 14-16 years old as we think we are when we're 14-16 years old,) I should've/could've engaged her in a more in-depth debate with her about whether it mattered or not that I was a boy or a girl -- because it clearly wasn't an issue of safety, (which she had at one point claimed,) since she was okay with me climbing trees once she realized that I was a boy; or I could've asked her why she was seemingly fine with me being a boy with long hair but was horribly opposed to the idea of a tomboy climbing trees; or (if I'd been even half as self-aware back then as I am now) I could've really blown her mind by telling her "It's fine if you continue referring to me as a girl since I do sometimes flip-flop between being a boy and being a girl, and you referring to me as a girl right now does kinda please me."
@heidih30483 жыл бұрын
This reminds me of how I felt when my mother told me, when i was about 13, that she didn't want me climbing the trees in front of our house. One of my favorite things to do, as an introverted person without many friends, was to climb high in a tree and read a book, staying up there for long periods of time.. And she thought it appropriate to take that from me simply because she was afraid of what the neighbors would think about a teenage girl in a tree. It disgusted me and definitely was one of the factors that caused me to begin questioning gender and gender roles at a young age. I wish I had had the confidence and quick wit to make some sort of joke about it at the time.
@GrahamChapman3 жыл бұрын
@@heidih3048 Yeah, if I had been in your shoes, I may have ended up saying something along the lines of "to hell with what the neighbours think" and maybe also put her on the spot for trying to take away her own child's happiness over something as petty as a shallow concern with gossipy neighbours... I may get grounded for speaking that way to my mother, sure, but, yeah, I agree with you: That is just plain disgusting and a mother should not speak to her child that way. Right now I'm just glad that I only had to deal with the occasional stranger pushing their gender biased ideas upon me because if my mom had been such a normie, I would probably have disowned myself just to get away... :/
@heidih30483 жыл бұрын
@@GrahamChapman I'm glad to hear you had/have a supportive mother. I did actually, while growing up, express the idea frequently that it didn't matter what the neighbors or others thought about my behavior or clothing.. But my mother thought I was immature to say so. Definitely not supportive. She just had an obsession for worrying about what others thought (and was/is also a fundamentalist Christian with very traditional "values"). I'm just glad to have made it out of adolescence with my sanity intact! 🙃
@GrahamChapman3 жыл бұрын
@@heidih3048 A fundamentalist Christian with a regressive gender biased world-view and an adherence to "traditional 'values'" (kinda funny how seldom "traditional 'values'" actually include any actual values) really doesn't have any more room to call someone out on being "immature" than a pot has of calling a peacock "black"... Ergo, not only was she being a hypocrite, her idea of what maturity is was also fundamentally wrong. I hope you're in a better place right now... I mean, relatively speaking. With trump* having fucked everything the fuck up since 2016, and 2020 being the way it was, and 2021 looking to be more of the same, like a horrible sequel to a horrible movie, it's probably quite unlikely that _anyone_ in a completely better place right now, but, you know, I hope that you've got more supportive and open minded people to talk with these days at least.
@heidih30483 жыл бұрын
@@GrahamChapman I always somehow knew that point of view was wrong, before I fully understood why. Thanks for the kind words. I did deal with some mental health problems in my teens and 20s. I am grateful that I have recovered and am now healthy and surrounded by mutually-supportive people. And thanks for that trip down memory lane (it was nice to remember the feeling of climbing and sitting in trees as a child)!
