I personally just don't get it. You abandon the modularity, accuracy, and ergos of the AR that make it so damn popular, only to also abandon the surfeit of shared magazines, bolts, and barrels, as well as the heavier bullet, that AK-pattern rifles enjoy. If you wanna enjoy an AK on a budget and already have cases of 5 56 stacked up from years ago... sure? I just don't see much use case for them outside of that.

@@michaelturk7237 it really depends. For Self defense and regular shooting it's fine. The problem is the ergonomic support and such. I think it's fine if someone is a casual shooter. Home defense, it doesn't matter. But if on competition for money, while not impossible, it won't be easy cause they have those dumb rules like activating the safety which may be a challenge for a southpaw, or using NODS. So it's user case scenario. They're great guns, but political corruption on both sides of the world have kept it very bare bones.

FYI - If you put in a significant number of rounds/time behind the AK, you'll find that extended charging handles tend to cause issues by adding weight to the bolt carrier and have a tough time staying on. Apparently rifle dynamics has even seen welded charging handles snap off.

I know the AK isn't as good as an AR. But I still got one anyway. Mainly because back in the 90s when I was a teenager my father took me and a friend to a gun show once, and I remember seeing AKs there for $300, which was a lot cheaper compared to most other rifles there. That relative cheapness and the fact they were AKs, the guns our old rivals in the ComBloc used, just stuck in my head all these years. When I finally started getting into the gun space a couple of years ago the costs had all gotten to where they are now, but I still wanted an AK, and I got one. I don't regret it; it's a fun gun, I enjoy it immensely. As you said, Brass, if crap hits the fan I'd rather take an AR gun because they're just better overall, but I think the AK is still a decent weapon set even if they're not the absolute best. Of course I went for a brand new Zastava so maybe I'm just defending spending a cool grand on an outdated rifle design and I'm just dumb. But I just love the damn thing no matter how derpy it is.

Since you're looking for a better charging handle I can personally say the TWS Hob Knob is an excellent AK charging handle upgrade. It took some minor fitment to get it on my AKM (I even scarily grinded some of the tip of the charging handle off to keep it from sticking out too far) but it is overall a really nice, quality charging handle extension that stays on there firm thanks to having three set screws, and I appreciate some nice flutes instead of obnoxious knurling you'll see on a lot of them.

I'm running a TWS dogleg 3 on a full size underrolder WASR. I haven't had any noticable zero shift in 3 years and probably 6-7k rounds. I've settled on TA02 ACOG with a 507c piggybacked, ultimak railed piston tube + trijicon 45 degree offset pic rail mount holding a PEQ2, and finally some polymer lower handguard (FAB defense maybe?) with my light and a foregrip on it. It's been a wonderful combo. The ACOG is in the .300blkout flavor and it matches up with 7.62 really well. I've shot it out to 400 yards.

14:30 I can recommend the Red Star Trigger. It´s cheaper (in germany atleast) than the ALG and more versatile. You can set it up in Single and 2 Stage. You can also setup the reset for you likings. I had the ALG but sold it. The Setup can be tricky at first but when its finally set its totally worth it.

Cool setup but I’m just stuck in 2015 Rifle Dynamics setup as being the pinnacle of AK modernization. Ultimak rail, T2, mini Scout, low pro gas block, chopped P/W barrel, ALG trigger, and Krebs safety.

No one else talks about AK suppressors unless it is the Putnik or Wolverine. Seeing your pick was worth the whole video.

After dozens of action shoot rounds at my range, the consistently solid AR dudes drop 10 bowling pins about 30%-avg faster than my AK. That's at either 25 or 50 yards. In my opinion, the trade for speed and precision is a harder hit within maybe 100, but definitely 50 yards. At those ranges both platforms are highly effective. Now, if the rubber ever hits the road in total societal collapse and these platforms become a necessity, not a luxury, what would I use? An AR-10 obviously. The only way an AR-10 wouldn't be superior is in frequent travel or patrol scenarios where weight means energy and fatigue. The force, pen, and range generated by 308 is primo stuff for home/neighborhood defense while you're holding out on canned reserves waiting for any cannibalism to subside. Board up tight during the day. At night throw on the therms/nvg's to track local banditos. AR-15 is an amazing general purpose fun platform, but in true shtf an AK is more reliable when running dirty and I'd be fearful of surviving on a potentially dirty AR. I've cleaned my AK bolt twice in 2000 rounds, and each time it had minor buildup with the firing pin still loosey goosey. Still I would only survive on AK sub 75yds, AR sub 200 clean-longevity, AR10>>>all. Sorry for the essay style response, but this is my closest objective grasp at the important points for rifle consideration.

Night vision accessories and suppressors suck all the soul and character out of any gun they are mounted to. I know they are important force multipliers but damn. I’ve never seen a fully kitted rifle I liked the look or weight of.
@reidhampton679912 күн бұрын
Another option for mounting laser and light without adding weight of rail, look at Midwest industries barrel clamp mount. I have ran mine for several thousand rounds now roughly.

I've been training extensively with both platforms for many years. When I'm being honest with myself, I have to admit that the AR-15 is the better choice, save for two reasons: I like the performance of the .30 cal cartridge at the ranges I'd be using, and I like the rugged simplicity of the AK platform. I'm left handed, which adds a level of goofiness to the AK platform. And, both AK's I run (Arsenal Bulgarian, Polish milled) are way overgassed, which limits fast doubles. So I'm looking at a KNS adjustable piston or doing some major gunsmithing to install an adjustable gas block. Every once in a while I'm like "why bother?" P. S. I'm not interested in suppressors, NV, or lasers. Not part of my plan.

That can actually does seem like an impressive fit as a compromise for the AK. Also might wanna try the Meridian AK trigger. Klayco did a video on it, seems pretty legit.

The ALG trigger was awful, I had issues with doubling, tripiling, and quad firing. I experienced this issue with two distinct triggers installed in two distinct AK’s (both Arsenal milled 7.62x39). I’ve been completely satisfied with the BCM replacements. FWIW the ALG operating rod and spring for both AK’s have been great.
@wildcat859812 күн бұрын
I know it’s not an AK but the Galil Ace has figured out how to make a dust cover with a pic rail that holds zero. If memory serves I think it’s hinged and pivots where it connects to the handguard or at least on the Gen 2 which is the only one I’ve played with but if IWI USA can figure it out than why can’t modern AK manufacturers? Or at least making quad rail or Mlok handguards with a monolithic top rail like this. This way you can at least run a red dot. Idk about this chassis system but it’s definitely a cool idea.

Built a PSA ak102, my kid loves AKs for some reason (probably video games). Its been solid reliability wise, cost a good bit more than a equivalent AR and is heavier with PSA's furniture. Stock trigger was shite but the ALG unit is fairly nice.
