sometimes you just need to break out routine, my recommendation, art, watch a movie, hear some music, singing works perfect for me, may be you should try it. And as you said, sometimes even if you love something, there will be days where when it gets really complicated, specially in an emotional way, but its ok, there is no reason to see life as black or white, and sometimes its just grey or why not, green o blue. I think that life it's about learn more about ourselves, when you know your self you're avail to understand and help others, this trip its getting at the end every day so most important is share with our loved ones.

When I look back at why I love coding ... it was the instant feedback whenever a few commands were typed in that hooked me immediately. Th idea that we can create something original and make it work on a screen instantly is exciting! The career has never been anything but an qdventure and truly incredible! Ideas and creativity match!

Thanks for sharing this! Really appreciate to see it's not only me but many of us are feeling the same way. And what I'm trying to do (but failing of course) is: 1. Try to exercise more to feel tired at night and rest 2. Watch movies about people who had a hard time in life and succedeed just to put things in perspective and remember how fortunate I am 3. Do the 'dopamine fast' for a weekend: basically shut down as many sources as I can (social media, fast food, hanging with friends, getting ego boosts, etc) to try to readapt my brain to enjoy the small wins again Hope that helps :)

Create something new with coding. For me I get burned out helping others often. But I feel energized by completing self goals and interest. This is why I became an entrepreneur... Endless potential to be creative. Also my opinion on certifications. It is so easy to access education today especially for software professions.. we find ourselves learning the old way of multiple courses at a time. This becomes taxing mentally especially if you are working your job and learning simultaneously. What I found that works for me is planning out projects and learning only what it is I am lacking as I complete the project. I feel today we need to be reminded of that. Software Professions are mentally taxing plan to limit burnout

Thankyou for the inspiring content, as someone whos experienced a lot of what u mentioned in the morning, I think no matter how passionate someone is about their career path or what they are doing, they would always experience some sort of burnout(whether its motivation or procrastination etc) from doing it almost everyday that's why as you said jobs give weekends, I think a big part of refreshing your drive and passion is to try and make everyday different in a way by seeing friends or hanging out with family ,or maybe something as simple as testing new waters like you've been doing with blockchain for example, i guess one think i would suggest is post videos on KZbin maybe twice a week or so instead of every other day but I am no youtuber so don't take my word for it . Goodluck!

I think there's very few people who really love what they do, most of us who don't hate our jobs/careers is more about liking the challenge and the results, but it's like a video game, after completing the game a couple of times it losses it's appealing. After completing challenging projects over and over again, your brain switches from releasing dopamine to seeing it as routine aka boring Maybe start exploring more demanding projects, explore other careers, or new hobbies at the very least

I've been in development for 4 years already and sometimes feel the same: not really motivated, work doesn't bring enough pleasure and stuff like that. Got my senior grade recently, but nothing really changed - I still don't want to do things sometimes. And that fact was really frustrating because I thought: "Oh, I'm a bad developer, I don't fit to the role I was so gracefully given". But then this thing came to my mind: "I want to live life how I want it. It's about ME. So if today I'm not really performant or exhausted or just want to do something else, THIS IS FINE". I believe that it's better to be a good person in general than a good developer only. But to be a good person you need to not only work, but read, relax, meet new people, travel and do anything that brings you pleasure and encourages you. That's more important than any kind of work. And when you know that, when you change your activity in order to be a better person, not only just a professional, this feels more consistent with who you are :)

Sometimes you can have a passion but doing it as a job can suck that passion right out of you. Sometimes you can be handed projects that perk you up and are right down your alley and are the right amount of challenge for you, other times you can get either unchallenging or over challenging projects that either bore you or stress you out due to time limits. I usually go through cycles of loving and hating my job no matter which company I work for, though some professions are certainly better than others. I used to like working in electronics, but then ended up as an electrician that paid far more and was so less stressful even though I still went through my cycles. Both fields introduced me to computer programming, which was one part that I really enjoyed. I am retired now and even though I did not like working for someone else in a multitude of career fields, I still like tinkering as a hobby, meaning when you are free to do as you please with your skills, it is so much more fun than being told what to do with your skills.

Thank you so much for this video, I can’t agree more about the struggles with lockdown, even if you really like your work (also web developer here🤗✨). I know balance is key, but sometimes is so difficult to get. Since November I have been having regular psychologist appointments, and then realized I could need more from a psychiatrist due to my hyperactivity and inattention I couldn’t control more, I have tried things that helped me in the past like sports or so, but somehow they didn’t helped so much ☹️, so it turned out that I really have strong ADHD symptoms and just started my treatment, hope that helps a lot, though it’s going a lot better. 🙌🏽✨💕

Looking forward to the video with Paul for some inspirational words about starting new business adventure! 🎥🎉 Home office is the best, honestly after COVID if they say to me that I have to work only in the office I will quit and search for new job, I may be ok with some kind of mixed option but still, home is best...no more wasting time for commuting and having more time for learning new skills, cooking and other better activates. (weird thing is that I feel that I work more hours and more intensively from home but still the comfort beats these negatives) I feel the same but could it be burn out? Or just boredom and lack of motivation from the routine and reduced social activities. ...not quite sure as well, when I feel like that I usually tend to make or plan out a drastic change of job / place or something else that will give me excitement.

For what it's worth, I'm coming back from being homeless - and I have times where I have to take a break. Then, I dive back in after the crash (and smashing a few gabapentin, which helps) and I've been memorizing and gaining more knowledge about what I need to search for online. I'm diving deep at times and then building my base wider (and hopefully, stronger). My goal, and I guess it's lofty for the point I'm at right now, is to use my lifetime of troubleshooting and apply it to this new and wonderful way to work. Also, being disabled, I'd prefer to work from home. Also, it'd be a big plus because I live in a small town and I'm not guaranteed to work here. But yeah... study, forward momentum and building passion. Excelsior!

I think we're wired to not be stagnant. When you are locked down in isolation, you lose a sense of "progress" because while you might be grinding out a ton of hours and side gigs, nothing around you is really changing. I mean, what good is making a bunch of extra money if you can't go on trips, finish projects, go out to eat, etc? There's a reason that clinical depression and suicides have increased over this last year, and I think you're experiencing a small glimpse of that.. For people like you and I, that manifests as just "being in a slump" and not feeling motivated.. But I have friends that are struggling really bad right now with mental health issues, and it's really sad. Suggestions? Stay close with a group of friends and make a point to visit with them often. We have a home group through our church that meets weekly, and it has kept us rooted through this time. If you aren't religious, that's ok.. just have a game night or something with other couples and/or families, stay connected. It has helped me to feel a sense of connectedness outside of just my nuclear family.

@@markthomas9181 Most are video courses with practice exercises and tests. For example on Coursera, you can try "Computer Science: Programming with a Purpose" from Princeton University or "Introduction to Python Programming" (for this one, be sure to click on "audit the course" when you click enroll for free, otherwise it will be only free for 7 days and then it requests a monthly payment). I follow a lot of courses to try and find a method suitable for me. Some people just like to do tutorials and start right away to code but me, I must understand the principles first and then I can code a bit. In that sense, I like on youtube the programming course from Stanford, search for Mehran Sahami "Programming Methodology". It is an old course and the tools may not be available today but the programming principles are still valid and it helped me to choose a language appropriate to my needs. Once you know the basics, you can learn from one language to another without too much difficulties. Just be patient and try to do a little day by day !

Mixture. At work, there is office politics which I do not like. Also, if your good at what you do, there are jealous people that will try to undermine your efforts. People watch and your expected to say the right things, and they also watch you to take advantage of weaknesses that you have in their eyes and exploit it to their advantage..

I did! I had two tshirts - they are sold out now. The one I was wearing was an eye chart with tech terms in it ☺️

You sound a bit burned out. It could make one feel "not passionate" believe me. I had to rediscover that passion after a massive burn out. Burn out seems to happen way faster when in lockdown in my experience.

For me, if you feel demotivated on a daily basis, it means you need a change: new project, new company, or whatever. I felt like this some time ago, I felt demotivated and it took me so much willpower just to do a little thing, and this video helped me a lot: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y2WaoWWwZZWJZtE Martha Beck says that feeling like this might be caused by a misalignment between what you really want to do, and what you end up doing because of social pressure, or cultural expectations. Suffering is good because it forces us to change and realign.

Sad to hear this, you have my sympathy. I can’t give any advice because for me in this COVID situation, I just work more and it works (as a man). I think for women it’s another thing because they have internal biological related needs. They have that tendency to do a lot of stuff for distraction. Now, this distractions are gone and biology hits back. So, men just can work more as a therapy, women can’t.
