Omg I'm so glad you did this video. I am a vegan and I notice a lot of shaming comments. While I wish everyone was 100% vegan, to me, what makes me so happy is knowing someone is making a difference and I think that's awesome. Speaking for vegans, I think vegans don't like it when someone calls themself a vegan if they aren't living a vegan life. I know I don't recall any time that you've stated you are a vegan however some have just assumed that. So thank you for making this video, sharing your experience, and for being open and raw. Lots of love!

That's really the one thing I don't like about KZbin -- there is so much hate and judgment happening in the comments. It's really disappointing and I think it brings a negative light on an overall positive platform. Really appreciate where you're coming from in terms of the vegan label and the ethical side of things. I guess I was approaching this more from the food aspect and less of the ethical reasons why people choose to eat a certain way, so I totally get what you're saying. Thanks for sharing and being open!! xo

Simply Quinoa when you're involved in any kind of social media there's always going to be adverse criticism. You've made such a good channel out of this so just embrace it. Don't allow yourself to be fixated on the negative when there are more positive messages to put your focus and good energy to. You can't please everyone so do what makes you happy because that is what's most important. Many blessings Alyssa and keep smiling!

I am currently pregnant with twins and cannot eat red meat with them. I simply throw it up. My body rejects it. I feel terrible when I eat them. As soon as I am done with pregnancy and breastfeeding I'm going to transition to mostly plant based diet. I think I'll always eat some fish and eggs and honey . So not a strict vegan., just a mostly plant based diet. I always try to have at least 1 plant based meal a day. Thank you by the way for sharing your story and all of your recipes!! Keep doing what you are doing! I appreciate you!!

Love your story! Thank you for this video! I went plant-based about a year ago to heal myself from PCOS & endometriosis. I just say I'm plant-based because labels tend to make me feel that I'm trapped in a box. The only "none vegan" product that I use/eat is honey/beeswax.

being vegan is not a 'label' it's not just a trend or a diet. It's so much more because it's saying 'i don't use/ abuse animals in any way for anything'. so you don't own pets unless you rescued them, you don't wear them, eat them,... you don't go to a zoo or go horse back riding. 'labeling' yourself vegan means being aware of what humanity does to other living beings and saying no to everything. So why not?

Thank you for sharing! I can totally relate. I suffered from stomach and skin issues but thought it was normal or would brush it off thinking I needed to exercise more and eat more vegetables. When I watched Forks Over Knives, it pushed me to start eliminating animal products too. I was getting terrible headaches when I did that so I stopped. I finally went to a holistic doctor as a last resort when my skin issues got so bad. Long story short, I was testef for food sensativities n found out I had a sensitivity to gluten, dairy, eggs, bananas, pineapple, and coconut. Your channel provides some amazing recipes that make my food transition so much better! Thank you!

Love this! I always have to label myself around my family since they don't understand my diet and it becomes difficult because they'll assume I'm fine with eating certain things frequently. By definition I'm a pescatarian, but I eat fish maybe once every other week, limit my dairy a lot, and eat mostly plant based (lots of veggies and plant protein). Your attitude on the topic makes me feel so much better, since other youtubers and viewers make me feel guilty for not being vegan sometimes.

I understand your reasons for not wanting to label yourself - and in general, people are reluctant to label themselves for fear that if they veer off that label in the slightest way, it will invite scorn and criticism from others. But I want to just say a few words about the importance of using labels. Labels like 'vegan' and 'LGBTQ' and 'socialist' are important because they provide us with a sense of community. It lets us know that there are others who believe in the same things we do, and it gives us the opportunity to converse with one another and exchange ideas and thoughts. Particularly when it comes to veganism, the label is important because it not only denotes a commonality of thought amongst a group of people, but it expresses succinctly the causes we are trying to fight for: environmentalism, anti-exploitation, pro-animal rights, etc. and this is helpful when we are dealing with those who are trying to fight against our causes. Words are powerful tools and having one word that labels a set of beliefs gives power to those who choose to use that word to label their life and their passions. It's important when trying to make a larger change in society. So while I understand your personal reasons for not wanting to label yourself or your diet a particular way, I wish for you to open your eyes to the larger rhetorical importance of using labels in other communities. Cheers.

I really appreciate where you're coming from Taya and I can definitely see both sides of it. I think for me, the vegan label (particularly on KZbin) brings out a lot of hate in people, which is the primary reason I made this video. If people who use that label could be more accepting and forgiving of others who don't, or who aren't vegan 100% of the time, then it would be a different story. I talked a little bit about that in my post today and mentioned that I get a lot of really negative comments when I use something like honey, but I have never once stated that I'm a vegan on this channel (I just share primarily vegan recipes, which is how I eat on a daily basis). I totally get that veganism means more than just the food people eat: animal rights, ethical reasons, environmental reasons, etc., and honestly, those reasons are why I eat the way I do. I just don't do it 100% of the time :) I stand behind any choice: if you want to use a label, great. If not, that's great to. This was a personal video and focused on how I think about my own diet, it doesn't mean that I'm not open to others, but again, I appreciate your comment and glad you felt you could share! 💖💖
@missonihill
@missonihill 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your kind response! I can't say I agree with your choices, but I see where you are coming from. I only wanted to respond to your comments regarding your reluctance to use labels of any kind (although perhaps I misunderstood on that account) and make it clear that labels can be very useful methods rhetorically and practically. Of course I understand why you wouldn't want to label yourself on KZbin as 'vegan' (the negativity, drama, false advertising in some cases, etc) but I would hope that you still largely identify with the movement and feel comfortable using the term in your day-to-day life when explaining your diet to others. I would feel quite sad knowing people in my community would make you reluctant to embrace the term, especially when we can use any help we can get in terms of spreading the message, and that includes educating people about what the term 'vegan' means. If it helps, I know several vegans in my life who eat locally farmed honey and bee products and still identify as vegan and are considered such by their vegan friends. Hopefully you will eventually feel comfortable using the label, even though some people are quite severe with their use of the term :).

I can totally see where both of you are coming from- I switched to a vegetarian lifestyle, eating vegan at least 2 meals a day a little over 6 months ago, and at first I was only eating seafood... when I tell people I can't eat something they have prepared they scoff at me and say you can eat but you won't, as if I'm being disrespectful to them by choosing not to eat meat or seafood. It's hard when I only have one or two friends to understand why I chose this lifestyle while everyone else around me thinks I'm being a crunchy granola hippie for not wanting to kill another being for food. It's hard to be put into this box when everyone around me is trying to hard to pull me out of it. So I get not wanting to put a label on myself bc it sets me up for judgement. But at the same time I am so proud to be a part of this that I find myself conflicted with my decision on a daily basis. Maybe it's because it's still pretty new for me, I just hope it will get easier.

Taya I just want to say Thank you for making me proud of calling myself a vegan today, you showed understanding and was very open with her. That made me proud because not just as a vegan, but as a human it is clear that we need to realise and accept that a word or label can have various meanings.

Great video, Alyssa! I love that you don't feel the need to label your diet. As long as you feel like you are making conscious decisions that are best for you and the planet then that's all that matters. I labeled myself a vegetarian for the past 12 years but the more I learn, the less animal products I consume. I'm basically vegan at this point but I don't want to label myself as such because I might get attacked for something I bought a few years ago that is made from leather or wool. I think the more the plant-based community celebrates progress over perfection, the more welcoming it will be to the average person.

I liked watching this video. I was curious about what you had to say on this topic. I noticed that you don't focus on labels even though you clearly try to eat healthy and avoid certain foods. I just recently started to see that labels contribute to disordered eating for me. When I say a definite "NO!" to a type of food, my mind often keeps going to that food until I break down and have "a little" which leads to a feeling of failure and I completely abandon my healthy food plan altogether. The only way for me to have balance is to leave all labels (my eating plan is a personal thing just for me, I don't need to label it, even to my family) and try to be mindful while eating. How does this food taste? How does it feel after I eat? Does it bring up emotions as I think about eating it? Also, I like to make sure that I don't even label foods as good or bad. That's the biggest thing I did that caused problems and more and more foods got added to the "bad" list. I was predisposed to this disordered eating as my mom had eating disorders. I do understand that sometimes people label their diets just to help people understand what they do and don't eat but I have met many people identifying with a vegan diet like it's a religion and I try to keep my distance from them because I slip into that mentality too easily.

Help! I used to cook everything from scratch, chopping vegetables every day. But now I've gotten a pain disease which makes it really difficult for me to use my hands. I can't chop as much vegetables anymore, or grate them etc. This has resulted in me starting to buy finished products like veggie burgers and stuff. I don't like them and it feels bad, but I don't know how to cook things from scratch anymore now that I can't use my hands so much anymore. Do you have any good tips and recipes for simple food that can be cooked from scratch which demands very little work? I would be very thankful and happy!

I have so many questions! What stores do you shop at? Also, do you plan your meals ahead of time and then go shopping? Or do you go to the store and base your meals off of what is there? How often do you go to the grocery store?
@Simplyquinoa
@Simplyquinoa 7 жыл бұрын
Happy to answer questions!! I'm honestly not great at planning out my meals -- I tend to have an idea when I go to the store of what I want to make, but also get influenced when I'm there depending on how the produce looks or what the availability is. I do most of my shopping at Whole Foods or a local supermarket called Fairway (which has a large organic/bulk section), but I also shop online a bunch. I love Amazon and Thrive Market. As far as how frequently I go to the store, it really depends, but I tend to do just one big shop a week and then if I need to pick up a few other little things here and there I might pop in quickly. I definitely try to get most of my shopping done on Sundays so I don't have to worry about having the kitchen stocked during the week. Hope that helps!! 💗💗

I agree with you. I tend to eat more of veggies and fruits but also eat chicken once in a while. I do not eat pork or red meat. My mom and brother think I eat "weird" due to my heaping amount of veggies on top of rice (buddah bowls :) ). I don't really label myself because it hard to explain to others but I'm transitioning to cutting out chicken. It's just so hard ! Thanks for this video!

I hear ya with the "weird" diet comments - I get that all the time! I think living in NYC has been easier because it's much more accepted, but with my traditional Italian family, they definitely don't really get it. It's an education process as I see it and each time they ask me questions or make comments, it's my opportunity to try and teach them something they might not know :) Keep doing you, Marisol! Eat the food that makes YOU feel best and don't worry too much about what other people tell you to eat 💗

Hi!! I really like your videos and recipes and I think it's great you're almost 100% vegan but I would totally encourage you to make the full transition :) I know you try to make sure that the animal products you purchase are from good conditions for the animals but there really is not such thing because whatever they produce still has a huge strain on them no matter how well people treat them, those products are not healthy for us and there really isn't anything nutritionally that we can't get from a plant source! Keep creating great recipes! And I hope you could look a bit more into the things you still consume because it's being all vegan is a win win win for everyone!!

I tried being vegan for a year, I was eating super healthy but still gained weight, so I had to start eating fish but non the less I really enjoyed being vegan & I'll do it again after I lose some weight, I know this is backwards
@Simplyquinoa

Do you think perhaps it could have something to do with portion control or macro ratios? I've definitely had to work to find the right balance with eating mostly plant-based, but again, if fish is something that makes you feel good, then you should eat it :)

Do you happen to have a video focused on foods that keep you full longer? My husband and I made the switch last May (Cowspiracy!) & we struggle with staying satiated. I find myself dizzy (this sounds terrible!). I've seen my (vegan) doctor and he thought I wasn't getting enough calories, which I still don't see to be the case. I could go on 😯🙁, but I'll continue to work on it! How did gluten come into play? I worry about adding another restriction, as it's so hard to have any flexibility as it is but I want to feel good. Xo!

This is great! Thank you for sharing your life! I was told to go dairy free and gluten free due to some health conditions I recently found out. I struggle a lot because I haven't found many things I can eat on a regular basis and I get discouraged if I make something and it's so gross I can't eat it. Smoothies for breakfast are a lifesaver. I would love a video of tips. What do you do when you buy a new ingredient such as protein powder and you can't stand the taste? I have tried to disguise it but it ruins almost everything I make. Plus there are a few teas I bought that I don't like the taste of. That became a lengthy comment...
@Simplyquinoa
@Simplyquinoa 7 жыл бұрын
I think these are all great questions, Felicia! For protein powder, I definitely recommend that you buy the single serving ones of a few different brands rather than investing in a huge container. That way you can find one that you like and not have to let the large one go to waste. I definitely think this could be a standalone video, so stay tuned!

Hi love your channel! It has helped me quite a bit, i am also gluten intolerant and so I try to stay away from wheat as well. I have gained a lot of weight transitioning to plant based though trying to figure it all out. I am working hard to lose it now while staying plant based. Question, do you eat potatoes, yams etc? I notice I haven't seen thing like that on your channel, And if no why not? I do see that you eat oats are oats gluten free? There is some ambiguity about what grains are really gluten free. I stay away from oats and rice as well. If you have a video on this please point me in that direction. Thanks!
@Simplyquinoa
@Simplyquinoa 7 жыл бұрын
I do, yes! I just haven't shared many recipes with them on the channel - not sure why! I'm a HUGE fan of sweet potatoes and have lots of recipes on my site using them. I don't really eat many regular potatoes, just because I prefer the sweets :) As for oats, you can find ones that are certified gluten-free which should work for you! If you're in the US, Bob's Red Mill is my favorite brand!

I realize calorie counting is frowned upon by many on a WFPB diet, but I want to lose 15 lbs. can you give us an idea of how many calories you average a day?
@Simplyquinoa
@Simplyquinoa 7 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say that I frown upon calorie counting as I do think it can be a tool to help people lose weight, my main concern with it is that it makes us look at our food as a number rather than the nutritional value it's providing to our bodies. For me, I honestly have no clue how many calories I eat in a day, but if I had to guess, I'd say I'm in the 2,000 - 2,500 range? Not sure tho!!

The only thing I'll say is it does bum me out a little. But only bc still eating eggs is harmful to the chickens. I am however happy that you don't eat most animal products and I would rather someone cut out most then none at all. To all the rude commenters there is also no reason to be rude or mean when voicing your opinion.

ciao bella, yes pls make a video about how to do a healthy transition to vegan life style. I've been thinking to do it but somehow i am lost...kind of too many info and it is a bit confusing. Additionally, i have been told that if a person incorporates lot of beans, lentils and soya products in the diet, that person will end up in holding lot of water...is it really the case? what's your experience?

your story is very similar to mine. I went gluten free almost 3 years ago and later that year went dairy free. I still eat honey though. btw have you tried the Chao brand (coconut herb) vegan cheese. it's the best sliced cheese I've come across.

There actually is a fabulous dairy cheese alternative out in the market. I dont know about other countries but in Australia we have a product, from Greece of all places, called Bio cheese. It's vegetarian/vegan friendly, gluten & soy free, low in cholesterol, lactose free, palm oil free, no GMO, has plant based dairy stimulant, and it's made with coconut oil. I'm not vegan but I absolutely love this cheese alternative. It comes in cheddar or original. At close to $8au for 200g, it's certainly not cheap, but I just love it and buy it regardless ;-)

I think you do a lot for veganism by spreading great vegan recipes that are also paleo-friendly and made from stuff non-vegans would actually want to eat.
