Indra riding on elephant Airavata was drunk with pride as Devas had just won a battle against the Asuras. The divine garland that was presented to him by Rishi Durvasa was treated with contempt and given to the elephant that dropped it to the ground and trampled on it. This angered Rishi Durvasa who cursed Indra that he would lose all prosperity. Goddess Lakshmi left Indra. On the advice of Mahavishnu, Devas approached Asura king Bali and they agreed to do Samudra manthanam. Thus Devas got back prosperity, immortality. Durvasa’s anger can be called righteous anger as something good always came out of it.
