Same, I remember watching these videos and ended up not buying one. Few months later my iPhone 11 fell between the seats and the only thing that cracked was the camera lens. You could imagine how mad I was specially because I had the option of buying a protector but opted out. Anyways, that was 2 years ago, going to buy the new 14 pro max and will definitely be getting lens protectors.

If anyone noticed, he pushed the lense protectors down with his thumbs and did not wipe them clean afterwards so yea, of course it will be blurry.. the protectors do downgrade but ever so slightly and no alcohol does not affect the oliophobic coating that comes from the factory that is on the glass to prevent finger prints.. it takes a LOT of wear and tear and time to wear it down.. also the protectors are not plastic, they are tempered glass.. unless you got a super cheap set off of eBay.

You say ‘slightly’ but I disagree - from personal experience. I’ve owned a 14 Pro since release date. And since day 1 I’ve had the same case, screen protector and camera protector on it. Anyway… I took the camera protector off yesterday as my videos of planes weren’t focusing properly and I couldn’t figure out why. Took the protector off and boom it fixed itself. Furthermore, I’ve never been able to get super close up macro photos because the camera would not focus properly (especially on Snapchat). But shock, it all works spot on now. I’ll never be using one again! Just need to make sure I remember I don’t have one on now though.

Have you considered wiping off the lens protectors before taking photos because you've actually just rubbed your fingers all over plastic, then tried to take photos and mentioning the expected glare. Yes, you will have glare and blow outs. Especially if you rub your naturally oily naked finger all over sapphire glass.

A few points: No, alcohol will not remove the "anti-scratch-layer (what ever that is)" from the glass. Apple and every other manufacturer uses oleophobic coatings to reduce fingerprints, but only on the screen. And to top it off, that again doesn't rub off with alcohol. You can use the pads without worries, no, you should absolutely use them because otherwise you'll have a much harder time cleaning the fingerprints. The reason why the camera protectors don't work is, that they don't stick to the glass. A normal iPad screen isn't laminated to the glass - if you go to the store, you'd notice that they have a much more washed out look than ipad pro or air. The same thing is happening here. You get an extra layer of air between the glass. If the protectors would fully adhere, there wouldn't be a problem. The way they are designed however will definitely impede on picture quality. Haven't seen an iphone lens cover that fully adheres yet. So until those appear on market, use a case that has a raised camera bump. Oh, and also: The sapphire apple uses for their lenses doesn't deserve it's name, it's really impure and scratches as easily as the screen.

although i agree, who knows when the camera lens protector actually protects when there's freak accident. but i don't really like the lower picture and video quality dude to the additional plastic layer. Hence I would suggest 2 things, get a good drop case + get a flip cover that can soft lock with magnet or button. This outer flip layer will take the brunt of the impact, then your case absorbs more shock. better yet, get a flip cover that has cover for the camera that you can slide out when u need to use. I found these in chinese e-commerce websites. they do make innovative products. The other issue is, we don't really know how strong these camera protectors are. whether they make a difference at all. so we are all talking out of the unknown. only way to know is drop tests.

I’d say getting a 9H camera protector and installing it where the rear camera is would be worth doing instead of just facing a direct risk of damaging the camera lenses. A slim case will do good enough to handle and absorb the impact as if the thickness is the same height, there will also be a better chance of having the camera in great shape and condition. The lens protectors I am talking about are not on the lens, but attached all around where the camera is.
@MashaT22
@MashaT22 Жыл бұрын
Very true. I have a high quality 9H protector. Plastic is useless - that’s he correct about. A 9H tempered protector is a different story. He’s also not considering that the lenses CAN get damaged in many situations, though unlikely. What’s more likely is that minor scratches will occur over time from items in pockets and bags if the lenses aren’t protected. I had horrible annoying line in my iPhone XS Max lens and had to take photos upside down in certain cases to avoid the line being visible (mostly). While lens durability has improved in newer models and surely aren’t like the good old original iPhones, they will still get minor abrasions over time - and I think having a 9H protector is the best of both worlds. A 9H protector can be removed if damaged or worn, while the phone lenses are fully covered and protected.

They are made of sapphire, yes. It doesn’t mean they are impossible to harm, only very unlikely with normal wear and tear. However, lens protectors are highly unlikely made of sapphire and are much more prone to get damaged ad consequently impact the image quality. If they are then hard to remove, they are only semi permanent junk. Also, adding another layer of a material of non-negligible refractive index that is unlikely to end up perfectly aligned _will_ negatively impact images (this written by someone who spent a doctorate designing optical systems).

I currently use these on my 14 pro max and also had them on my 12 pro. I never experienced any glares on my pictures because I have a habit of wiping my cameras before hand. Also, to remove them, I just used the tip of my finger nail to pop them off. It wasn't difficult at all. Thanks for making this video. I purchased a well-rated lens cover (it was a one piece style that goes over the thee lenses) but no matter how accurately I placed it, it affected the focusing of that camera of my 14 Pro Max as soon as I opened the camera app. And when I was recording a video, it constantly focused and refocused which created a weird jumping around / zooming effect when the center or focus had not changed as dramatically as the lenses / focus were reacting. I noticed when you put the lens protector on your phone in the video you used your fingers to press the lens covers onto the lenses. You then did not wipe the lens protectors off thus leaving oil from your lenses. You did not wipe the oil off the lens protectors before taking the demonstration picture of the lens protectors clarity. Naturally the oil from your fingers would degrade the quality of the picture. Perhaps you should clean the lens protector caps before taking the demonstration picture to get a fair comparison of the lens with and without the lens protectors.

sometimes i feel like channels like these dont understand risk management. “the chances of it falling directly on the lens is very low” yeah but i can still happen. personally i dont like the way a case feels on my phones. i typically just put a screen protector on my phones and leave em and theyll be fine for years as long as i replace the protector when needed. the new lenses are made from sapphire (or have sapphire properties to prevent scratching) so thats not the issue. the issue is so the actual lenses themselves dont crack, and also to prevent the metal casing around the lenses from getting scratched (which happens all the time, mine are pretty rough).

That's actually a pretty good argument. I definitely think twice before I advise people to do (or not do) something. When it comes to these camera lens protectors, I weighed the pros and cons and found out that having a case is a better solution to protect lenses from scratching/cracking. With that being said, if you are someone who doesn't like putting a case around the iPhone (which I definitely understand), then you might consider using these lens protectors. Just pick one with good quality, and you're good to go. Thanks for watching and commenting bro.

sapphire is scratched resistance only, not impact resistance. so if your phone fall down from some height and hit any sharp concrete directly to ur lens, the lens will be crack/break. if you trying to scratching ur lens yeah it won’t break or scratch but still sapphire would not guarantee lens impact. fyi currently we have sapphire lens protector

They are not made of sapphire. They are made of a synthetic material that mimics sapphire. And it is pretty prone to cracking. Very very hard which eliminates scratches but if you drop it you risk cracking sapphire glass. Trust me. I am a watchmaker. That type of crystal crack all the time.

There is a test in KZbin and it's ether not a sapphire or poor quality sapphire as on MOHS hardness scale sapphire is rated 9/10 which is practically impossible to scratch by metal. The test showed that iPhone camera lens glass is ~6/10 which proves that it's not a sapphire. Material having 6/10 MOHS scale can be scratch with metal or even glass. So lens glass can be damaged if you put it your pocket with your keys.

It’s like buying a 4k monitor but then adding screen cover so it looks like 1080p because you heard 1080p was better for gaming. Then you find it has only reduced the resolution without improving the frame-rate and the cover is hard to take off without damaging the screen. Could have solved the problem by reducing the resolution output to the monitor or bought a cheaper 1080p monitor. Tldr don’t get a camera lens cover, just get a thicker case. Bad idea paying all that money for a great camera only to do something that results in bad photos.

What are you on about. Sapphire still scratches (not so easily but it still scratches, just like gorilla glass, Razer blade won't hurt it (marketing)but a basic book staple will tear it apart). Also you need to protect it from it's main impact issue, which is the lens edges, any slight tap on the edges will play hell with whatever is inside as well as with the very thin lenses themselves, the little metal ring won't protect them, that should have been molded as part of the shell.

What’s your thought on a phone case like the Ghostek Nautical which has a built in cover over your camera lens? It’s not a lens protector per se, but just a part of the cover. I’ve used this type of case on my iPhone 8 and 12 Pro Max and didn’t really see any reduction in video or image quality. However, now I just bought a 14 Pro Max and I’m getting into content creation so I want the highest quality possible. I just bought another Ghostek Nautical case. I may run some tests with and without the case for quality. Worst case scenario is when I shoot photos and videos….I just take the case off or use another case while I shoot.

Okay, I know you tried your best, but here is why you should reconsider: 1) alcohol wipes does not remove any “scratch-resistance” (for real, have you studied physics and chemistry?); 2) Apple claims their lenses are “sapphire crystal” technology, which is just glass with thin layer of ceramics on top. If don’t believe - just watch JerryRigEverything channel when he scratches everything with picks - camera lens on iPhone is just made of regular glass. Just go watch what real sapphire is. 3) the covers you show are definitely some crap. I bought Spigen lens cover for my 11 pro - everything good, real glass (but the whole camera bump was covered), now for 14 pro I got Spigen glastr ez fit optik set - all three cameras individually covered with metal-glass covers, super satisfying to install, do not affect image quality at all, not notable and you even get a plastic tool to remove them easily. To resume: Just don’t use cheap products, find good ones.

I really like it because lenses are now flushed 1mm below the protective frame and it's easier to clean them all at once with a cloth.
