1:44 & 2:35 No one can play these parts like Martha!(even Gould sounds dull at these parts) I have never ever heard any other performances than hers. She is accelerating the tempo and changing the accent position very cautiously and effectively. Like a sense of burgeoning rhythm towards the glorious future . I feel her very subtle and deep musical intelligence when listning to these parts every time.

How she gives expression to each hand is beyond me. As a Canadian, of course I love Gould, but he's a bit too exact... Also Bach is so interpretative that every musician playing his music is in their own mind. And before I get negative comments, I've been playing and studying Bach cello suites for over 25 years...it changes on the daily.
@herrickinman93033 жыл бұрын
You write like an adolescent twit. "Bach is so interpretative"? _Interpretative_ doesn't mean "open to interpretation." Moreover, you merely assume the music of Bach is open to interpretation because there are no performance directions in the original score and because you are ignorant of Baroque performance practice.

Fine hypnotic metrical demonry if a little fast and insistent throughout and with the relatively wide and unidiomatic dynamic shading as distinct from Gould’s narrow focus on the argument; flowing engagement but the subtly jaunty romanticism is far from Gould’s evenly inward focus and the experience has become sickly before the end. A parallel situation is Barenboim and Uchida in the Mozart sonatas- masculine hard intellectualism over feminine curvey sensuousness.

Bourrée I&II starting 13:03. A bit too harsh in my view. Some imperfections at 13:44-13:50. A bit rushed after 15:04. I prefer Ivo Pogorelich's version which is almost perfect. But Ivo was clearly inspired by Martha, who recorded this record 6 years before Ivo!

I like the version she played in 1969 elsewhere on youtube. That was the younger fast and impatient Martha. It was played with speed, but she still catches all the expression. Speed was right at the limit, and it seems to be just perfect. Pogorelich seems to be little faster still and lost some expression. Gould on the other hand is slower, but too perfect and too academic. He lost the free spirit. Is the Goldilocks principle. Martha was just right.

teteskone41 not that it's a racing competition, but the great Russian pianist Anatoly Vedernikov (Richter's two-piano partner and a Bach interpreter every bit as great as his famous friend) plays the gigue some 15 seconds faster than Gould - and with a clarity comparable to Gould's. Maybe you read Richter's diaries where he's comparing the partitas as played by Gould and Vedernikov, often preferring the latter. Not saying I do, I'm obsessed with both, but Vedernikov deserves to be in every conversation about great Bach pianists.

Vintage sewing-machine style. Even though it keeps a strict rhythm it still sounds rushed. How is that accomplished, because it’s a mystery to me. He was also about resonance, harmony and expression, am I making any sense at all? Leave the spirit of this to the music boxes of that period. They were snappy little virtuosi, too fast maybe, but eggs must be cracked!

I love Martita but the Prelude and the Allemande are too fast. The allemande should be always taken like it was a lullaby ... and the prelude hides a proper counterpoint melody that you can render explicitly when you play it on the piano.
@herrickinman93033 жыл бұрын
You say, "The allemande should be always taken like it was a lullaby." Sentimental nonsense. The allemande is dance form; no one dances to a lullaby. A lullaby is a sleep aid for children, not a dance.
@gustavogutierrez54823 жыл бұрын
A question of opinion and interpretation. Nobody can know exactly how Bach would determine the speed. But I can see where you´re coming from, and it is also my opinion that sometimes Martha speeds up the works not only in this case but in some others. Again it is just my humble opinion, too fast for my taste but a great interpretation whatsoever.
@herrickinman93033 жыл бұрын
@@gustavogutierrez5482 Ever since Liszt, professional concert pianists who play Bach's solo keyboard music in concert tend to put on a dog and pony show to wows the audience by playing Bach as fast or faster than their rivals.

It’s not trivial to say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder in this comparison, which might best be made a little more analytically for the sake of understanding the differences rather than claiming one is better that the other, which can be a matter of personal preference. A case could be made for every competent interpretation. Bach speaks to the hearts of performers and listeners alike. For me, it’s fascinating to hear differences of interpretation. Vikingur Olafsson is showing a lot of promise too. Try his version of BWV 989 for example. He takes full advantage of the dynamic range of the piano in a quite purposeful way. What if we could take the best example of the modern piano and bring Bach to the modern concert hall to play once again? Not a real possibility of course, but a little fantasy doesn’t hurt either.
