Our problem is that we celebrate the person not their art

yeah agreed. And also that it's HARD for people to change their problematic behavior. People can barely change to better themselves. What makes us think that problematic people will change for other people? I've rarely seen a racist or sexist person change their beliefs. (there's still a slight chance tho) It's more comfortable to live how you were taught. BUT I think one thing that could help with change is if people were open to listening to history and believing people's experiences. I know I've definitely changed some strong beliefs of mine (pro-life) because I was educated on the history of the abortion and how women's bodies were governed.

They are BOTH related. Celebrating the art provides an income, platform, and ultimately way to do the wrong they are doing. I'm not supporting a rapists music knowing they get residual income because that allows them access to women girls men and boys to violate and a team to cover it all. Had that money not been there theyd have been exposed and jailed for the same actions OR be out of access to the mass of people to hurt in the first place.
@janinesmithx5 жыл бұрын
Agreed. But in serious cases like R.Kellys for example I completely understand and support the boycotting of his music because as one of his underage victims it would be extremely traumatic to be somewhere and his music start playing. Imagine not being able to escape the person who abused you. Yes you can turn the radio off or leave but the damage is already done, you’ve already been reminded

Preach! People are so quick to cancel somebody over a mistake they have made, present or past. There are serious situations that deserve to be cancelled like R Kelly, but there are a lot of other situations that people jump to canceling someone just because it’s the trendy thing to do online that will get you a lot of retweets and likes. Every single person on this planet has made mistakes that they’re not proud of and everyone deserves a chance to be forgiven and to redeem themselves. Of course depending on the seriousness of the situation.

I love the idea of redemption culture, but it's like it already exists and is simply the anti-cancel culture. Too many people are in the replies saying how they already forgive the person when the person hasn't done anything to show remorse for their words or actions. You do something terrible, I need more than a notes app apology. I won't support someone who sweeps things under the rug and moves on. If you've done something bad, the apology never ends, in my opinion. You don't have to blatantly apologize every second, but there's this consideration that you have to be very aware about for now on. Too many people are canceled and won't be redeemed because they don't truly care how they've affected others. Especially if they're still being supported by a large audience.

I LOVE her opinion on R Kelly. Since it's a lotta lowkey pervs that are showing themselves, I'll say at least half of us listened to his music for the good- party times, a romantic night, etc. Problem is, 90% of his music tells on himself and us continuing to listen played a role in him thinking he could get away with his sickness. Amanda mentions redemptive culture and, honestly, if Kelly would've tried getting help at some point with all the money he made, he could look a little better. The fact that he slid through the cracks with clear proof of pedophilia (Aaliyah, marriage, a possible baby) plus the escaping of the video shows me that he simply thought he was invincible, so I have no love.

I just want to know who put the price on redemption? Who set the standard? Because as a people, we don't have the right to "cancel" people. There's a huge difference between accountability and straight hatred and judgement. Scripture says ALL have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. We can't sit here and pit one sin against another. We can be angry and have our own personal opinions about the situations, but no matter who it is and what they've done, they deserve a chance to change and be reinvited into society, not forever shunned.
