Amanda and Felix - Mahalo for explaining the difference between being local and being Hawaiian. So many KZbinrs don't understand the difference and just call everything Hawaiian. It's greatly appreciated from an old local guy that now lives on the mainland. Speaking of old, I'm also glad that they are now teaching the Hawaiian culture in public schools. Back in my day, they barely covered it in school. BTW, I know he's before your time, but Kapaolono Park is where Mackey Feary used to hang out in his early teens.

1000 thumbs up for clarifying who is Hawaiian vs a local! I started to watch your videos for the ono food finds, but I subscribed because I appreciated that your history and facts were right on. I am a Kamehameha graduate and ethnically Japanese, Chinese, and Hawaiian and could tell that you guys were knowledgable and truthful about Hawaii and its cultures. If you don't know the history, you will say so. Thank you for sharing fun and knowledge!

Mahalo for the shout out about learning Hawaiian culture/about Hawai'i in school. And how the plantation mix created local culture, cuisine and pidgin, etc. That not everyone from Hawai'i is Hawaiian, of native Hawaiian blood. Like that distinction Hawaiian/Local. Oooooh yeah. I used to hit this place up all the time when I was working at KCC. Plus the #2 bus would take me past it every day and I would look wistfully out the window dreaming about their scones and cakes. (EVERYthing there is off the hook!) I used to work for a tour company that included their blueberry cream cheese scones on their circle-island bus tour (along with some Kona coffee) -- soooooo good. For Rainbows, maybe you can do a comparison between the School St. and Kapahulu branches. I always wondered how they are different since I've never gone into the School St. one. And thanks for sharing your mana'o about Hawaiian culture and local culture. When my wife and I first moved to Hawaii (we moved to Molokai for five years first) it was definitely a learning process, and I didn't understand the difference back then. But living there was a good crash course. lol. BTW, On Wednesday my wife and I picked up some smoked meat at Guava smoked, which was awesome (and just around the corner). I'm cutting out carbs for a bit, so no potato mac, scones, or desserts for me right now. But I'm good with meat and veg. lol

I love the food here, I really do. Used to go every week with no issues pre pandemic. Unfortunately we have had similar experiences of wrong orders ever since the start of the pandemic. I’d say more often than not if we didn’t check before we left, I came home with a wrong order, wrong side, etc. One time I checked and they gave the wrong meat on our plate, so I went back and asked to switch to the correct meat and they charged me $4!! Really sad how bad the communication had gotten. Again love the food as always, just maybe check the orders before you send them out and we drive em home. ❤️

Except for one thing (and I’m not bashing on you) I really don’t care for the dessert portion because I’m not a big dessert fan. Of all the desserts I’ve tried, I can safely say I don’t like about 95% of them. Actually it’s more because I don’t care for sweet stuff. But I still watch your vids all the way through but start to lose ineretest during the desserts. Again I’m not says my it’s you guys, it’s just me.

Hi guys, thank you for explaining Hawaiians vs Locals. We are locals from Hawaii living in California (Bay area) and opened up a plate lunch restaurant (Got Plate Lunch) and sometimes we get people come in and make us feel bad, cus we are not Hawaiians, but we serve Hawaiian local food. And so many people don't know that, and even the people from Hawaii too. How can we educate people?

We’re considered Hawaiian geographically and nationality if born and raised. But like you said weʻre “local” or kamaʻaina via immigration & ethnicity🤙🏾🙌🏾

Yes, nice explanation on Hawaiian vs. local. But when mainlanders (or even foreigners) call us Hawaiian, I don't really think they are using it as a racial term. It's just that Hawaii is the only state where it's name is also the name of the ethnicity of the indigenous people. For example, if you live in Texas, you may be called a Texan, but there is no ethnicity called Texan so ethnicity has nothing to do with it. It's just where you're from.

We definitely don't think anyone is trying to be purposefully racial when using the term, but they may be seen as ignorant or disrespectful, so the best way to combat that is to put it out there in the world (KZbin😆) Also, some people think we're trying to be "Hawaiian" but we're clearing that up by explaining that we're local not Hawaiian. 🤙🏼
