While presented as a comedy, it's actually fairly accurate. Lemmy (of Motörhead) said once that every rockband becomes Spinal Tap after you reach a certain level of success

The actors wrote the music (w/ some help from others), formed the band and went on tour and producing 3 albums. There was an announcement in 2022 that a 2nd movie was happening w/ the original director & original cast. Still waiting.

You should go on a Rob Reiner binge watch- he has made some of rhe best movies in often in totally different genres: Spinal Tap, The Princess Bride, Stand By Me, Misery, When Harry Met Sally are still very much liked and watched today.

Yes, there was no script as such but there was a plan for how each scene should unfold. So the actors came up with the specific words in each take, spoke over each other and reacted very naturally, which is why it feels so real.

The keyboard player Viv Savage (real name David Kaffinetti) is a friend of mine. He’s shared some great behind the scenes stories with me. He’s also a great keyboardist and the only member who’s actually British!

@@marlonthemarvellous he got the part because his friend Ric was already cast as the drummer and recommended him. During his audition, Rob Reiner asked why they should hire him and he said, “Because I’ll give your movie AUTHENTICITY. You’re all playing British Rock Musicians, I AM a British Rock Musician!” He was hired on the spot. I’ll share more stories if you want.

@@marlonthemarvellous after making the movie, they decided to take the band on the road and do a real tour. Halfway through, they noticed that the drum set was smaller each night. They found out that the drummer, Ric Parnell, was selling the drums off piece by piece for drug money but the drums didn’t belong to him, they belonged to the movie studio! He was fired and replaced instantly.

@@marlonthemarvellous they also told my friend David that he could perform under the name Viv Savage but years later, Michael McKeon and Harry Shearer called to tell him that they decided to “kill off” the character of Viv Savage. They said he could still use the name but if anyone asked Spinal Tap about it, they’d say that he died and anyone claiming to be him is an imposter. So a lot of people think David died!

One of the greatest comedies ever. And most of this movie is (brilliantly) improvised. And the actors, Michael Mckean, Christopher Guest, and Harry Shearer are all excellent musicians.

This movie is required viewing for any touring musician or production crew. I saw this in high school when I was in a small time band and thought it was funny. Several years later I was working as a guitar tech for a band on some pretty big national tours, and it’s crazy just how much of this movie rings true! It just makes it that much more funny because it’s instantly so relatable.

It didn't start as a real band, but they did form up to release an album or two more than the one they put out for the movie. They also went on tour a couple of times. I even saw one of their shows. For Big Bottom, they brought a bunch of guests (pro musicians who happened to live in the area) and gave them all bass guitars. Great show. I'm not a musician either, but Phil Collins, in an interview, said that he thought that This Is Spinal Tap could have been a documentary about his band, Genesis. In the early '70s, they had some elaborate stage shows that always went wrong. Background projectors would freeze up on the wrong slide. The lead singer, Peter Gabriel, would have costumes that didn't allow the microphone anywhere near his mouth. Phil was very complimentary about the accuracy of the movie to real-live rockers.

The Stonehenge problem happened to the third Black Sabbath line up (1983) but in reverse with the props 3x too big, inspiring the movie scene. Black Sabbath’s manager then hired a person to crawl on the props in a “baby devil” costume (like Born Again’s album cover), but someone forget to move a mattress where the actor was supposed to jump, injuring the guy and ending the prop.

Yes, you got it right, this movie was largely improvised. I think the Simpsons episode you're thinking of is the one where Homer goes to Rock 'n' Roll camp, with Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, and others.

There was an episode where Bart goes to see Spinal Tap in concert. Since the bass player for Spinal Tap is Harry Shearer, who voices many characters on The Simpsons, I’m sure it was easy to get the cameo approved.

This is one of those movies that gets better when you watch it a few times. It’s a favorite film of actual rockers, many of which have confirmed that much of what we see here happens to real bands and is just slightly exaggerated for comic effect. A few have mentioned the part where the band get lost backstage.

It's funny you brought up the Simpsons. The Bass player, Derek Smalls (real name Harry Shearer) does many of the voices on the Simpsons; most famously Principal Skinner. He also voices many of the other characters including Mr. Burns, Ned Flanders, Mr. Smithers, and Maggie Simpson.

I think the only recurring cast members between Spinal Tap and Guffman were Christopher Guest and Fred Willard. Michael McKean (and Ed Begley Jr) returned in Best in Show, and Harry Shearer in A Mighty Wind.

It's not technically a series, but if it was, "Waiting for Guffman" would definitely be included. Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show, and A Mighty Wind (and the less well known but also funny "For Your Consideration") are more closely related to one another (All directed by Christopher Guest, with mostly the same cast, and all made one after the other) than they are to Spinal Tap, which was made 12 years earlier and directed by Rob Reiner.

Spinal Tap actually appeared on the Simpsons so that was probably them. The soundtrack album to this movie has an all black cover. The metal at the detector was the aluminum foil.

They’re NOT QUITE like G&R because they’re supposed to be British- but played by American comedians. Their drummer keeps dying so it may supposed to be like Led Zeppelin but with the look of Def Leopard. They do wacky stage theatrics like Iron Maiden or Alice Cooper. Also, there’s the fact that the two leads started out singing together in the 60s apparently. A lot of 70s rockers like them started out wearing suits on Hullaballoo

This movie is aimed squarely at early 80s British heavy metal bands like Iron Maiden, Def Leppard and Ozzy Osbourne....although a much less successful version. Even a lot of the band members who saw this movie when it came out had to admit it wasn't far off the mark. If you want to get a sense of how those bands really looked, check out Iron Maiden's 'Hallowed be thy Name' from the 1982 live concert at Hammersmith. Fair warning, it may turn you into a metal head!

You said you thought most of the dialogue was improvised. Actually, all of it is improvised. They had the camera rolling, and they shot something like eight hours of video then they cut it down to get the movie. You can find some of the outtakes here on KZbin.

That same group of actors has made several more heavily improvised movies over the years. They're all good, but I bet that you would really enjoy Best in Show.

In 1994 my girlfriend and I went to a dive bar in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania called The Electric Banana. Saw a couple crappy bands. That was the only time I went there. I still live near Pittsburgh but I have no idea if that dive bar still exists.

Amanda there are several instances in this movie that were influenced by real bands and rock history. At least two that spoof the Beatles. One is the all black album cover. The Beatles released a very famous album with an all white cover that is officially called “The Beatles” but is always referred to as The White Album. The other reference is the girlfriend that creates tension between the two main members of the group. This is a reference to John Lennon’s wife Yoko Ono who for years was thought of as the reason the Beatles broke up.

Some performers do make strange demands, but that is a test to make sure their contract has been read completely and followed for safety and performance reasons. The performers acting as Tap are bright and talented people playing stupid teenagers in adult bodies. The antics being portrayed are intentionally inane. Enjoy the stupidity.

Enjoyed your reaction. Rob Reiner comes from an entertainment family and pulled in a lot of comedy talent to make this movie. As for the portrayal of the band, a lot of musicians (even some here on YT) have said this satire comes REALLY close to the truth. The annoying girlfriend thing is supposed to be like Yoko Ono, who fans blamed for the breakup of the Beatles.
