@@amandamiquilena Definitely one of the best season 3 episodes, and maybe among the best so far! The Simple Rick/Freedom Rick subplot is a nice look into the idea of capitalism and commodification theory too (where all ideas of subversion, freedom and expression can end up hijacked, repackaged and sold back to people, before long) Whilst some of the other plots borrow from Chinatown and other cop/political stories. And yes, Stand by Me, for the kid Mortys one.

Yeah, I always appreciated the social commentary on display this episode. Very clever way of addressing the divides that very much still exist in today's society. And as pointed out already, I love the homage to the movie Training Day with the cop Rick and Morty. It actually kinda makes me want to see the show's staff try and go full Tarantino with a citadel episode at some point, lol.

I'm only six mins in but I have to leave my comment now, This is my favorite episode of the series up until this point. The way I experienced Rick and Morty was a little unconventional, my dad sent me the first three seasons on DVD through the mail around three or four years ago, I binged the show multiple times. The first time, this episode was the standout, and upon rewatches my appreciation for it has grown, as they're so many details for the audience to pick up. The whole show has those rewarding moments but this episode is like a movie. love your channel!!!!

I never thought about the whole "Summer cheating on Ethan with Bucket Head" thing before. I always just kind of assumed her relationships were as flighty as a real teen. One episode they may be dating, the next episode they aren't, and unless the writers felt the need to mention it we can't really know. ALSO there's that theory that some of these episodes may be showing alternate versions of Rick, Morty, and the whole crew. Nowhere does it explicitly state that every episode takes place within dimension C-137.
@MarcosElMalo22 жыл бұрын
I agree. And Ethan is just a douchebag. I also must have missed where Summer was dating him before she hooked up with buckethead.
@amandamiquilena2 жыл бұрын
To be honest with you, my first thought when i watched the Summer and Bucket Head story arc, was that Ethan and Summer were probably separated at the moment (you know, cause they seem to be on and off) but since i'm a feminist, i always try to watch out and avoid radical thinking and behaviors within myself so...when I read those comments calling her out, i was more inclined to listen and i still agree, simply because we don't know for sure what the status of their relationship was. NOW, the point you mentioned about dimension C-137 is a very good one that i hadn't considered before 😮
@cctomcat3212 жыл бұрын
Hey, look, A rational take. Also, Morty did what he did, not Summer. It isn't about "fair", it's about sending a message. Don't mess with my big sister. She cries, you cry. It fits with Rick's concept of love being irrational and illogical. Even just ill. That, and nobody ever says, including the show, what anyone does is ethical or healthy. Usually the opposite. I think the people who got hung up on that one little thing to even remember Ethan enough to consider him cheated on are just self reporting their insecurities. Idk, just my opinion.

Identity also operates in quirky ways in the Rick and Morty multiverse. Raises karmic questions of narrative continuity along with the cosmic. Which Summer went with Bucket head and which got stood up on camping date?

Thank you for your wonderful reaction. As already mentioned in other comments the entire cop arc was based on Training Day, a fantastic movie you really must react to. And the group of Morties was definitely inspired by Stand By Me. What you picked up on, which I had missed - was the remaining Morties now being able to do whatever they wanted with impunity. I believe that's a reference to civilian-origin paramilitary and militia groups that grow in power and influence when an ideologically-aligned authoritarian/dictatorial leader and government come to power. Then they become bolder because they're the favoured ones, and they may even have more power and influence officially vested in them by the new government. It happened with the Sturmabteilung (the Brownshirts) under Hitler and the Nazis, it happened with the Blackshirts under Mussolini, it happened with the Red Guards under Mao Zedong, and it sorta happened with the Proud Boys under Trump. History definitely repeats itself. They say that those who don't remember their history are doomed to repeat it, but the main lesson we learn from history is that we don't learn our lessons. Sad, isn't it?

Morty is out there killing sentient beings, destroying civilizations, desecrating the dead, etc. but a bit of consensual carnal activity is what is kind of disturbing...

Re. the disclaimer: There's a difference between dumping someone for someone else who _has_ a different body type, and dumping someone for someone else _because_ of their body type. Not to mention that Summer's family is naturally going to take her side, and they are the only ones whose words we hear. If what you're saying was really what Ethan is supposed to have done, I feel like the writers didn't do a good enough job communicating that in a reliable way. Well, that, and I hope Ethan finds a way to turn back eventually. I think it's well deserved if it's a temporary punishment though. Let him learn his lesson.

I mean, it's *exactly because* of Morty's explanation that we know that Ethan did nothing wrong. He broke up with her, and started dating the girl he liked more. Which is the *healthy way* to do it. I'm not merely saying that marrying the super buff bucket murderer while you're dating someone is "worse". It is, but that's not all. What Summer did was wrong. And what Ethan did *simply wasn't.* 😉

Spoilers: Not all episodes of Rick & Morty happen with the same family. Just like how they hopped dimensions after Cronenberging their own, each time we watch an episode it might be a completely different family in a different dimension, so you can’t really rely on continuity from episode to episode. We see "our" Rick and Morty have adventures every episode. I don't see how it's a plothole that we didn't see their Atlantis adventure. It's not like some important event happened off screen. They went, apparently had a good time, and came back. It was basically just a throwaway joke.
