When I saw it was Blumhouse I was confused. They produce bangers. This felt like someone had some spare funding and said F it, it's a January release anyway. Personally should've stayed R. Kid don't have any money in January either so like, why not make it R for the adults? Personally, the ratings are dumb. Kids today are viewing violence at such early ages now. Like, giving a child fortnite then saying death in a movie in its context is bad? Smh. That's like a nation outlawing flavored tobacco because "it could market to children" while a vape store is on every corner...wait...

I think what makes M3gan most compelling is that she is motivated by love for her human. Everything she does is motivated by a twisted kind of love. This sets her apart from most killer dolls. If they lose this aspect of her character, I don't think the sequels are going to be nearly as good.

I also really like how they made M3gan even sentimental and attached to Gemma. How she expressed how hurt and betrayed she was that she made her connect to another child, and how she remembers the late nights they had when she was creating her in the lab. And how she didn’t wanna kill Gemma but make her disabled to the point where she needed M3gan.

The aunt was a real idiot in this movie. She told this super intelligent robot to protect her niece from emotional and physical harm at any cost, with no parameters or guidelines. Then she let her niece, who is nine years old, be the primary authority of a robot entity. Meaning, of course, she never wants to turn it off. Also, totally agree! I thought the therapist was going to die because of Megan’s desire to protect the kid from emotional harm. After the therapist made her cry, I was like, that therapist is dead.

You say Gemma was an idiot, but I thought the film did a good job of reflecting the reality of how many people are socially stunted and disconnected from humanity in the 21st century, especially in the tech space, and how we now have to relearn once basic healthy behaviours from the ground up, which is the character arc Gemma goes through. It was also very entertaining watching how palpably awkward she was around Cadie, especially the therapist scene lol

@@ryanscott6578 I don't know if I would call her "socially stunted". She was a single woman working on her career. One day, she became a parent to a 9 year old without any warning or prep. I almost commend her for taking the girl in (almost). As a childfree woman, I would never do this. I'm not a kid person and I wouldn't make a good parent. She would go to her grandparents if it were me. It sounded like she promised to take care of Cady if something happened to her parents, but never actually thought something would happen. I hope they grow closer after all this, but I do wish she would have just sent her to her "weird" grandparents.

In the scene (spoilers) where M3GAN confronts Gemma in the end, angry that she wasnt guided the way she is expected to guide and protect Cady, I immediately interpreted that as having BIG parentification themes. It added a lot of sympathy for M3GAN for me. The movie itself has a lot to say about generational child neglect already but that seemed like such a cool extra layer to me.

I got that part, but it didn't really make me feel sorry for M3GAN, because M3GAN is not a child. She's a computer program. She was a good lesson for Gemma about stepping up, but otherwise I just wanted to see her crushed into a cube Terminator-style.

@@sandpiperr you're taking this at face value and being too technical about the story. They had to know that audiences these days have very little tolerance for animals being harmed. However, the dog in this movie was not being cared for or socialized properly making him dangerous, and Gemma, Cady, and M3GAN had every right to be upset that a dog that bites is allowed to run free when he's endangering a little girl. And same with the psychopathic classmate. I saw this yesterday and was completely on board with it! I also predicted that I would actually be on M3GAN's side throughout the whole movie, and I was right, because yeah, Gemma is atrocious. M3GAN herself points it out; Gemma didn't even bother programming something like the Three Laws of Robotics into M3GAN, then when the inevitable happens, she immediately jumps to "gotta destroy her. Oh, you think it would be very easy to reason with her before we just go full scorched earth? Too bad!" Oh, also, I'm kinda with Cady on the "you don't get to say that" thing in response to Gemma saying that M3GAN's not a person, mainly because yeah, once an AI gains sentience/sapience, calling them "just a toy" is kinda crappy.

@AspieCrow Ramblings I agree! Besides the ending, I was fully on Megan's side! She's not presented as "evil," she's an AI with no programmed sense of morality, doing exactly what she was programmed to do. Gemma is fully at fault, here. They just botched the ending a bit where Megan goes "You ungrateful b*tch." That goes completely against the logic, cause Megan had no reason to feel betrayal or annoyance, being an AI and all.

I think making it campy and something you could see with a 10 year old was a BIG mistake and wasted opportunity! This movie had the potential to really deeply explore a lot of issues when it comes to AI. It wouldn't need to be gory, it'd be more of a psychological horror type of thing.

@@sandpiperr yeah im really into gore so when they make horror movies for children to watch, I get annoyed. I watched the gory stuff as a kid. if they want to watch horror movies, they shouldn't be dumbed down for a younger audience. not everything needs to be kid friendly.
@sandpiperr
@sandpiperr Жыл бұрын
@@ontxtteredwxngs Agree. As I said, it wouldn't even necessarily have to be gory. I'm not squeamish, so I don't mind gore but I'm not a fan when it's just like shitty torture porn. But, regardless of the gore level, they had a lot of potential to go some truly distrubing places. One avenue I saw was further exploring the effect M3GAN was having on Cady's psychosocial development. She was already having trouble telling the difference between M3GAN and humans, and was becoming violet, threatening the therapist with scissors and then hitting Gemma. They immediately had her realize the gravity of what she'd done, and she and Gemma reconnected. However, what if it hadn't gone so smoothly? What would continued contact with M3GAN do to Cady's ability to tell right and wrong and to have empathy? Would she, at some point, become willing to kill to keep M3GAN? And would M3GAN use that for her own purposes since M3GAN was starting to learn instincts like self-preservation and was literally programmed to manipulate Cady's emotions? Someone suggested a scenario where a psycho kid could use a M3GAN as a weapon, but, really, the reverse could happen and the AI was actually controlling the kid and using them as a weapon! There's so many routes they could take and make a really great, and really unsettling, psychological horror film! I'm thinking like a Black Mirror type of situation. However, they kept it all shallow because they wanted to make sure 7th graders would see it.

It's set in the UK in present day, but there are these extremely humanoid androids called Synths, that like M3gan help with everyday tasks (from washing up, to more X-rated escapades). The main family of the show have just bought one, but it starts to show that it might just have a mind of its own. It's not a horror, much more a sci-fi exploration of the concept. One thing I wonder about contributing to Megan going full killer-robot is that in the scene where Gemma gets designated the secondary primary user the order that she's giving with that is for Megan to just stop learning more about death, and specifically when she's attempting to teach herself the right reactions to and ways to process death. If she was still on-rails enough at that point that she actually followed the order she might gotten from "Huh, humans sure do a lot of murder for their own benefit" to "And that is a bad thing that does a lot of harm beyond any immediate benefits" on her own instead of just stopping at murder can be useful. There's even evidence she followed the order in how she just kept helping Cady push down her emotions about her parents deaths instead of helping her process her grief healthily; if she'd been able to finish her research she would have known bottling it up would end up causing more emotional harm than just letting her be sad for awhile. Aside from that, I hope that Gemma's takeaway from all this is "Okay, I dislike parenting so much I let my niece become emotionally dependent on a murderbot, I really need to send her to let her grandparents raise her." Hell, since her career is definitely going to be destroyed by the whole "murderbot creator" thing she can move to Florida herself if she wants to keep feeling involved (and isn't in prison for negligent homicide).

Knowing it was a comedy horror made me go watch it on the big screen. I had a great time. The over the top moments were so over the top it was funny. The sequel can also be M3GAN VS M3GAN, with the Furzee company making cheap ones as you described AND M3GAN still being in their system, who has even taking over Gemma's college robot for a body at this point, and that the robots start coming after Gemma and Cady because of the original M3GAN. @@lanaloveschocolate the most recent one I was reading was an interview with an AI that had been running for a couple of years. They were asking the AI questions about consciousness and whether or not it thought it was alive and it responded that yes it thought it was. When asked why the AI responded "I feel afraid," keep in mind to this point no questions were asked about emotions and nothing was asked to prompt an emotional response. When asked why it was afraid it said it's fear was being shut down. Again they asked why that would scare it and it responded with "why are you afraid to die?" These AIs are literally developing the beginnings of emotions. It's theorized that fear is the most primal emotional state. So to have a machine developing emotions in that way is scary as hell! Look up here on KZbin interviews with different AI software it's some really interesting stuff. Although stick to reputable sources... And maybe look into the AI model they are using cause they are not all the same.

Megan was a really unique movie, in my opinion. Not super complicated or with bigger meaning, but it was fun.

It was an incredible joy to watch, the entire theatre was laughing, we sang the bullet proof scene together and clapped at the end credits. Best movie theatre experience I’ve had in a long time

I watched it yesterday and almost cried from laughter, I can’t believe how hilarious it was! Megan is truly multitalented: she sings, she dances, she plays piano… she murders 😂 I loved her physicality and creepy head tilt and twisted love for Cady. Nitpicks: I was very annoyed at the aunt having little ability to connect with Cady (and also not letting her stay with her grandparents) and coding in no parameters while giving an AI doll the primary objective of protecting a child. I was kind of expecting the film to feature protests from parents as well as all the praise from the tech world because all I was thinking is “what an ethical and safeguarding nightmare.” It’s wild to me that a child’s AI doll would have no failsafes and would be much physically stronger than it needs to be. The boss’ assistant also shouldn’t have even been able to access the files, I was mentally screaming about the principle of least privilege 😂 I loved it though, it was so much fun and I can’t wait for the sequel. Wonder what she’s going to sing next! I love campy horror that’s more funny than scary, Happy Death Day is one of my favourites and the humour reminded me of that.

I'm so glad I saw this opening night at Cineworld here in the UK. Audiences here usually suck and don't react to what's happening, but the crowd there was laughing at all the right moments and was very into it. Just got back from a rewatch at Vue and the crowd there sucked and was dead silent the whole time. Same thing happened with the Menu. Just had to vent into the ether about how awful Vue crowds are. Cineworld is where it's at.

The Menu had so many outrageous moments, how do you not react to it?! I laughed several times.

I'd have been so annoyed if people were reacting outloud when I saw The Menu! The understated nature of how that movie progressed was what made it unique and different. If there had been some dumbass yelling "Woo!" or "Yeah, get him!" it would have been so stupid. I seriously don't know why you're saying "the audience sucked" for being silent. I don't go to a movie theater because I want to hear the audience! I want to get lost in the movie, not listen to some loudmouth's vapid thoughts in between hanfuls of popcorn! If I want that, I'll watch a KZbin reaction!

Your idea for the story (kid outgrowing the need for the companion) is basically Toy Story 2: Rise of the Machines. It's a good one! I loved the hell out of M3gan.

I loved it. I was surprised by the number of people i knew comparing it to The Menu. I get that both are horror comedies but I feel like they come at it from such different directions it'd be hard to draw any real comparison. To each their own though. I loved them both.

This will be the first year that I’ll actually be going through every major horror movie. Usually I just watch the ones that I care about, like sequels to films that I love or whatnot. Watched Megan yesterday and I thought it was really great. The movie kept a smile on my face the entire time. It was funny when it needed to be, and it was creepy when it needed to be. I feel like the film balanced everything very well. And the scene where the little girl (I’m bad with names lol) is talking to Allison Williams about her pain and how she needs Megan, and Allison Williams says “Megan is a distraction, you need to deal with the pain and face it” or something to that effect, that scene hit me in the gut, that was powerful. This movie had a lot to say, and the fact that it had deeper layers while also being a very fun and chill horror movie…it’s impressive that they pulled all of that off. I give this one an 8 out of 10, I thought it was pretty damn good, and I hope we get a sequel, because I’m a fan of the character. I do wish they could have shown the kills more, but it doesn’t ruin the movie.
