You know the one. She’s the character who seems to perpetually exist outside of the plot, a sort of one woman Chorus whose main purpose is to cast her eyes to the heavens in the most exaggerated of eye rolls, click her tongue, and make smarmy comments about what’s going on - while never actually being allowed to take part in what’s going on. There are many variations on the type - some less or more sassy than others - but always at the core of the character is the fact that she isn’t a character but a caricature of the black woman." *Pop culture SBFs include Luther from Mission Impossible, Dionne from Clueless, and Lucius from The Incredibles.* This role was NOT that, and THAT is what I mean. I'm not even going to dive into your desire to minimalize bisexual representation, especially in POC. Is this movie the BEST stride possible? No, but it was trying and that matters.

I found Ann to be one of the more interesting characters, and she's possibly suffering from Stockholm Syndrome. She's married to Steve, is fully aware of his doings, and her missing leg implies that she was a former victim of his. Even when she's relieved that he's dead, she still tries to strangle Noa.
@samf.s.77312 жыл бұрын
I didn't think that was the case. The 1st layer of the film is the horror comedy, the 2nd is all the metaphors. His cannibalism is a metaphor for his cheating, he just wants a body count. He tries to romanticize it too which is hilarious. I thought his wife stays married to him because he's a plastic surgeon and he gives her all the face lifts she could ever want. She knows he cheats and she forgives him. Her limb loss means that he hurts her, in a similar manner to the other ladies. But she's still complicit because she gets things out of it. A house, kids, and the chance to brag about being married to a plastic surgeon who's goodlooking sure play a part in it too. On the first layer, it could be that he didn't kidnap her or anything, she was complicit either from the start or became complicit when she found out later on during their married life. On the 2nd layer, women like that exist, they think "Oh but I invested too much into this" or "Oh I want the free stuff" or "The most important thing is to have a man that I can flaunt", and of course there are women who just straight up get conditioned into believing fuckboi mysoginistic BS, like "That's how guys all are", or "everyone makes sacrifices in relationships" or "Yeah that's the price for having a guy who works while you don't have to do anything". Like all the girls, she's hurt by his actions, but she's willing to put up with it. Edited for clarification.

@@samf.s.7731 oooh I like the idea of the cannibalism representing infidelity. I def get where you're getting that. And I can totally see how Ann is like an actual stockholm syndrome case in that she's also a victim-- both in the literal sense as a former "meat" girl and in the figurative sense as an abused spouse. Like she's damaged enough to become jealous of his other girls and yet feel indifferent about his death because he's awful. I mean, she has kids to take care of. His downfall is potentially theirs too, so she could just be acting in their interest in her own coldblooded reasoning. wouldn't surprise me if lots of abusive/toxic marriages have been kept together for too long because of the fear of how it would effect the kiddos, so that could be part of what her character represents rather than just "pick me" like Amanda puts it
@BooksandBuns2 жыл бұрын
I sure hope it ain't Stockholm syndrome. Although, if it is, wouldn't it be fucking ironic? It would be ironic, but ultimately, heavily overplayed. Stockholm is a boring, overused trope

I loved this movie! My one critique is that there seems to have been no physical repercussions from having one’s gluteus maximus excised. @mayhit2 жыл бұрын
Hahaha, I haven't seen the movie, but I was thinking the same thing throughout Amanda's recap. I feel like maybe the writer picked her glute because it's a play on the whole "men treating women like nothing but a piece of ass" thing. But if they wanted to make it sexual without the glaring plot hole of Noah still being able-bodied afterwards, they could've had him take one of her tits instead. It's still has sexual overtones, it would largely fix the plot hole, AND it'd have a nice element of resonance with the myth of ancient one-breasted warrior women.

I enjoyed the film and appreciated that its commentary felt present but not heavy-handed. There's one point in it where Noa & Penny are talking through the wall and Penny says something about how they need to remember that none of it is their fault, and that it is never their fault: as a sexual assault survivor that part resonated hard and gave me an even deeper appreciation of this film. With that phrase, the actual cannibalism of these women being an allegory for not just a shit dating life but for actual sexual assault seemed solidified. Noa's process of "going along" was not just reminiscent but near identical to that of enduring an abusive partner and pretending to be who they want you to be for as long as it takes you to gain the strength needed to make an escape. I'm actually surprised if the concept of this film is more focused on dating life and less on the sexual assault factors - both certainly play a part, but the latter seems prevalent. Also very surprised that @amandathejedi didn't actually mention the assault factor - though I suppose if you can manage to not see it, you are lucky.
@50possumteeth862 жыл бұрын
I literally won’t shut up about how adamant I am that this film is about abuse. Especially when you can read Noa as briefly actually falling for Steve, that is until she realizes it’s hurting the people around her. It’s not her fault, but she can either only gather the strength or only “wake up” to Steve’s actual abuse when it’s affecting others. I love that the ladies get away and there’s a sense that while they’ve suffered, they’ll eventually be okay, especially if she can rely on the other survivors.

It's hilarious as a parody of packages sent by small businesses, but also really interesting commentary on how our consumer landscape sanitizes "unsavory" production processes. Who cares how something was made or obtained if you get it in an aesthetically pleasing curated box, right? Just aaaaah! So good!

I watched this completely blind for Sundance and it abso-fucking-lutely blew me away, I can't believe this is Mimi Cave's first feature film! I think going in blind is the best way to see this the first time, particularly that moment when the opening title FINALLY drops and it becomes a whole other film. I also watched it the day it dropped on Disney+ here over the phone with a friend who was also seeing it completely blind and listening the thier reactions and hypothesis about where it was going while talking film theory the whole time made it EVEN better!

Beyond the obvious moral aspect, cannibalism’s super dangerous. Any parasites or diseases that an animal has are much easier to catch from their meat if they’re the same type of animal as you, because the parasites/bacteria are adjusted to their specific host species. Cross species contamination is much harder. Would not recommend partaking.

In the movie We Are What We Are, a character dies. The autopsy shows the problematic prions. This leads to the human eaters almost being busted. You can see the prions affecting a living character too throughout.
@sholem_bond7 ай бұрын
I didn't know that, but it actually makes a lot of sense that it would be way easier to get infected by a parasite from a member of your own species, rather than a parasite from the body of another species. I had heard once that cannibalism, or at least drinking blood, especially the blood of other humans, might help cause diabetes, but idk if that's true.

One big difference between this and typical "final girl" movies by dudes is that we don't get subjected to endless voyeuristic grisly shots of the woman's tortured body. Although we know he has removed part of Noa's body, there are no gory close-ups of the damage. We see things from her point of view, and she is focused on escape.

I had to pause this video halfway through for like 20 minutes because this movie is the perfect storm of almost all of my deepest fears coupled (no pun intended) with an actor that portrays a character I'm very attached to (Bucky Barnes) so I was getting this extremely strong physical reaction of anxiety and nausea. Obviously that's not on you, I know what my fears are and i still wanted to see someone review this. I'm kind of fascinated by Sebastian Stan's body of work (No. Pun. Intended. Lol) lately, it's reminding me of when a much younger Johnny Depp did Nightmare on Elm Street and Edward Scissorhands shortly after being recognized as like a heartthrob celebrity. I just thought it would be interesting to share!

This is the director's first movie!? Like holy crap, way to hit the ground running! I wasn't ever really scared, only a little disturbed in a few parts, but mostly just invested and of course frustrated like with most kidnap-centric horror films lol. But it's a really fun metaphor like you point out! Well, not "fun" but artistically it's cool how the subject is handled. It kinda felt like a Jordan Peele movie in its approach to theme and metaphor that way. And dammit I just love me some Sebastian Stan. Dude gives every role 100% and so did everyone else in this movie imo. Never even heard of anyone else in this movie and they all did a fantastic job, especially the actor who plays Noa.

I like watching movies but I'm not well-versed in film stuff, which is why I love your explanation videos. But even I knew this was a good movie because it actually made me feel nauseous enough to step away for a few minutes. Gore and body-horror movies have never made me feel sick, so I was impressed that this movie evoked such a response in me. Daisy's acting was so good and the character was so believable that the horrors of cannibalism became real, unlike in other movies where empathy isn't established because the characters are too ridiculous/unreal.

This might sound weird but I like how usually we see cannibals as the lower class but here the flip it to the high society eating the “lower” classes for their own enjoyment
@sholem_bond7 ай бұрын
Do we normally? The whole "vampire count/nobility" archetype or trope comes from the idea of the rich and the upper class "eating" the poor or feeding on them parasitically; even Marx used it as a simile in "Kapital" at one point. Just because "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and "The Hills Have Eyes" exist doesn't mean cannibalism in horror (or fiction in general) is usually a "low-class" thing. I'd argue it's usually the opposite.
@CatChaos3697 ай бұрын
@@sholem_bond huh that’s a great point I guess I didn’t count it in my mind as it’s not eating flesh but drinking blood but yeah that’s a great observation! Especially since they (vampires) often hold power over the lands they live making it even harder for the humans to fight back!
