As a new clinical dietitian. I still watch your full videos and just hands down in explaining what RDs do and going into detail with science based. I work in ambulatory care/ outpatient in endo, high risk OB and primary care office. I always get asked to create a grocery shopping list, create a menu or work out plan. Like no! Lol. Anyway great job in this video more people to inspire and the reality of what we do. BTW very few asians in our field. I only 3 Filipina RDs including you.

Great video. I think a lot of plant based people just assume dietitians work exclusively in advocation of a plant based diet, but clinical dietitians have so much work just keeping people with a variety of conditions alive and eating. I shadowed a few clinical dietitians a few years ago and BOY. Most of the work was filling tubes and just trying to get people to eat and not waste, and the most 'advocacy' was handing a heart attack patient a piece of paper with some 'heart healthy' tips on it as he was getting checked out. You're doing amazing work out there

@@amandavsevilla YES! I feel like many people don't understand the plethora of barriers people face before going vegan; chronic diseases, food apartheid, the housing crisis, etc. It's not just as simple as "eat some plants". Not to make excuses for people, but the issue is much deeper than purely health or ethics for the people who most need a plant based diet (i.e. low income, minorities)

They usually lean towards animal proteins for recommendations because they contain the 9 essential amino acids we need and can only get from animal proteins. the focus is more on serving size and depending on the patient's health issues, it could be low enough to get the A.As needed. but also depends on the patients preferences & choices, like if they're vegan obviously they won't be eating animal products. I'm currently in a dietetics program.
@constantchange1145
@constantchange1145 2 жыл бұрын
@@aFeverishFiend 8* essential amino acids right? unless I am missing one? Plant proteins contain all of them, as long as they have a bit of variety then Vegans can easily get enough of all the essential amino. though I'm guessing you knew that and I am just misinterpreting your comment.

A good thing to keep in mind is that you wrote you notes so other people can read them and help out too!

It’s my first time to see your channel. It has always been my dream to become a clinical dietitian but I think it isn’t destined for me, currently I am working as a dietitian in a nutrigenomics company for almost 2 years now and I am enjoying it so far. But seeing your videos it brings back the fire in me to go back to clinical setting😭. Anyways, wishing you luck on your work and Godbless😘 --RDN from the Philippines

What do u think about hospital food that is unhealthy? I’ve never had/seen hospital food but people always say hospital food is so unhealthy which seems sooo weird to me, and why don’t they change it?
@amandavsevilla
@amandavsevilla 5 жыл бұрын
hi kaitlyn!! yeah i agree.. i barely eat hospital food either. and yeah it does look sooo weird to the outsider but when you think about it, but this article breaks it down pretty well: www.healthyway.com/content/apparently-theres-a-good-reason-why-all-hospital-food-is-so-gross/ "The current food culture in hospitals is built to “feed as many people as possible for as little as possible,” Cool said....The bias is toward food that ships easily, never spoils, and can be prepared with a minimum of staff and skill." It's more important to keep costs low for patients coming in, so they have to keep their own expenses low which unfortunately comes at a price with low quality food. I'm not in defense of hospital food, but i can understand why cost and time efficiency is so important-- they have a LOT of mouths to feed. I dont know what the solution can/will be that will make everyone happy but i am aware of this issue. Also, hospitals aren't meant to live in, most patients are in and out within a couple days/weeks. What's most important is giving them the resources to choose better options for them when they are discharged and living at home. to me, 3 days of hospital food is worth it if patients are empowered with knowledge on healthier choices moving forward.

Dietitian was actually one of the many careers I thought about pursuing haha.. I might have put more thought into it if I knew it was so interesting! Like the commenter mentioned below, I thought it would be more focused on weight etc.. this is way better.

Many dietitians (who are still super passionate about their career) that i meet aren't even the most "fit" "clean diet" people! They are just healthy, normal adults trying to extend health to all populations through food :)

I believe she has a playlist with a bunch of her videos from when she was in school/dietetic internship! It's really awesome, you should check it out. :) I'm a dietetics student right now though, so I can quickly tell you the basic steps. 1. Attend an ACEND-accredited undergrad program. ACEND is the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics. A lot of schools will offer a BS in nutrition, but not all of them are accredited. Attending an accredited program qualifies you for a dietetic internship. 2. Complete your dietetic internship. DI's are also specifically accredited by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Completing a DI gets you real-life work experience and allows you to take the RD exam. 3. Take your RD exam. Like many other health professions, becoming a registered dietitian requires taking an exam that tests you on everything you've learned during your time in school and your internship. After you pass your exam, you're officially a registered dietitian!

This was really interesting, thank you for sharing! Just curious, in the clinical setting, how often are you able to counsel these patients about general diet and nutrition? In this case, can you counsel him towards a more plant-based diet that can address his kidney disease?

If you're going to promote tea + plant based eating, you ought to warn that the tannins in tea mess with the absorption of iron in foods being digested, and that the tea ought to be consumed 30 minutes before or after eating.

Hey Amanda! I love your videos. I’ve been following you since I went vegan for the past 3.5 years. In one year I will be a nurse and I wanted to ask you how could I as a nurse in the hospital teach about the health benefits of a plant based diet to my patients?
@amandavsevilla
@amandavsevilla 5 жыл бұрын
here's what another vegan nursing student said: I am in nursing school and you can't give any medical advice to others such has not to take this medication, etc. While I was in the hospital I wanted to say something to the ones who didn't care about their health but nurses can't do that. We are there to take care of them and follow doctor's orders. It is a very rewarding career and once you are done with school, there are so many opportunities out there for nurses and nurses are always in demand. You can't push your beliefs on them since there are so many different people out there that you will be taking care of, you just have to roll with the flow and quite a few times I had to keep my mouth shut which was really hard to do. www.veggieboards.com/forum/14-general-health-discussion/53520-vegan-nurse.html

I'm just a DTR right now with a bachelors. All I gotta say is as an RD I better not have to lift another heavy ass thing ever again or have to wash another frkn dish ever again. Idk, during my schooling years nutrition related I went from being a dietary aid which in a nut shell is basically a dishwasher, sever and food prep person for the kitchen to a DTR which is the person that gets the tray lines ready for cart transporation and makes sure the pts get the appropriate meals for their specific diet requirements and they do practically everything a dietary aid does as well as menu clerk work which is like being a walking drive through. Being a Dietary Aid sucks ass, being a DTR is very easy in comparison, however sad to say I'm still being used for hard manual labor. 😑 Anybody who has washed dishes for five hours straight only to do inventory afterwards or before depending on ur shift to throwing out trash and to be treated like absolute crap from some people, I have felt ur pain and promise if the RD thing leads me to being a Nutrition Director I will do my best to be a better boss leader.
