I can’t believe how bad they treat dietitians I was considering this career, I’m watching your video and I feel so sad. Every healthcare worker is important for the system you matter !! People are so unaware of how important nutrition/dietetic is.

Thank you so much for your insight. I'm very grateful how you broke your working day down into parts and busted some myths about dietitians only being advisors, while in fact you check the lab work too and work with charts. I'm considering a Food Science and Nutrition major which will allow me to pursue Dietetics after a Master's degree, so I was wondering what's it really like working as a dietitian. 😊 I appreciate you not being vague and giving a clear list of responsibilities a dietitian has.

Thank you, this was helpful as I'm debating if I should apply for/accept jobs in clinical since that's not why I got into dietetics, but it seems like everyone wants to see clinical experience on your resume. To me it sounds about as exciting as you shared. :/ You did a good job of sharing the various aspects of the job realistically.

This is very eye-opening. I'm glad that you shared the pros and cons. 😅 I'm an introvert, too, and I'm thinking maybe talking nutrition to students might be a better fit for me, instead of educating the patients. I've always felt better speaking to larger groups than one-on-one.

Talking with patients is definitely a learned skill! While it can sometimes be really daunting, with practice, I've been able to get more comfortable with it. (It may also help that I work with kids/parents now, and growth/nutrition is usually pretty valued)

@ireanybeany
@ireanybeany Жыл бұрын
Awww, I think even if you're bad at math you could still become a great dietitian! It might be a little tough getting through calculus and physics but once you've gotten past those classes, there's not a whole lot of really hard math that you have to do while you're working (mostly conversions and finding rates- think chemistry math)
@advocate988

I am a Registered Clinical Dietitian. I am not bad at math but it is my least favorite subject. I have math anxiety, but I got through the coursework. Some accredited dietetics programs don't need physics or calculus. You can check with different programs to see what specific math requirements they have. I do know that you have to do basic chemistry, biochemistry, physiology, microbiology, and statistics. You can get through those classes without having to be a math genious. I hope this helps 🙂.

Great video. I lasted 5 years as an RD in the UK. Inpatients. The lack of respect from other health care professionals and patients, coupled with the emotional fatigue and overall monotony of the day to day work, made me leave the profession. Lastly, working as the only male in a department of 20+ females became an issue over time... the cattiness and bitching from my colleagues was unbearable 😅

I have a question, i heard there are physicians that get a license in nutrition like CNS or become a physician nutrition specialist. If they and dietitians work in the same hospital, will it affect dietitians ?
@ireanybeany
@ireanybeany Жыл бұрын
I haven't personally encountered any physicians with any sort of additional nutrition licensing so I can't say for sure, but I feel like they would probably be more open to hearing what dietitians have to say and value nutrition more.

This is ridiculous why an earth would a dietician need to learn the calculus? I am so glad we don’t have this system in the UK to become a doctor you don’t need to take Alevel maths and you don’t need to do it for many classes. They force this in many eastern country and it’s totally pointless. There’s no reason to study maths at that advanced level
@ireanybeany
@ireanybeany 4 ай бұрын
Math requirements are dependent on university/major. Calculus isn't required for didactic work to become a dietitian, but you may need to take it if you choose to major in something other than nutrition. I needed it for my biochemistry major but not my nutrition major. Statistics is the only math requirement for dietitians. And while I don't use calculus necessarily in my job, I appreciate it for the critical thinking skills it taught me, which has really helped to set me apart from some of my peers.

Hi there! As a former SAHM I want to say, you can do it!! I’ve been one for 3 years and just went back to the workforce due to inflation. I’m going for dietetics and it will take a few years (I just have to fulfill the math requirement to transfer to the university of my choice).. and that may take a year or two just to get in (you have to apply the year before your intending start date at the university). As someone who is changing careers and has been a sahm, please, do not talk down to yourself like that. You are more than capable. If you have the passion, you can do anything your heart desires!

@ireanybeany 9 ай бұрын
You'll likely have to take a lot of additional science classes in your bachelor's on top of your social work major if you're planning on getting a master's in nutrition and getting your RD that way. Most graduate programs require basic science prerequisites for applying and admission. There's just no way around that. I don't do any physical procedures with my patients other than examine them but I have heard of some RDs putting in feeding tubes for patients at other hospitals. And being in a hospital in general sometimes you just see things like wounds by accident.

@ireanybeany
@ireanybeany Жыл бұрын
Great question! I work 40 hours a week with rotating weekends. On the weekends that I work, I take a day off during the week to compensate for the time I will be working during the weekend. On weekends, I am able to work from home (4 hours Saturday and 4 hours Sunday) but I don't think that's very common. The bigger hospitals I interviewed for required dietitians to be in person on weekends they worked. I'm the only dietitian at my hospital so I feel like they offer me a bit more flexibility than other facilities.
