Amano Shrimp does the impossible in order to escape

During a water change these Amano shrimp try to escape, with one of them climbing the glass

Our amano shrimp are our water change indicator. I keep a couple in every tank. They have a panic like glide that they do across the glass around the aquarium that notifies us they may be uncomfortable in their environment. As soon as we change water they stop. They’re incredibly intelligent.

@äpplet 1234 that’s exactly it! They skim the glass around the tank at a rapid pace. It usually happens overnight too. All our tanks have been running for quite a while now. I have a ghost shrimp and an Amano shrimp in my goldfish tank (65 gallon) which may as well be an indoor pond. It’s fitted with a few pothos vines and lately I haven’t had to change water in months, just top it off.

@äpplet 1234 I highly recommend pothos to remove nitrates btw. It take a couple months for them to root in the water and adapt to the change but once they get going they basically clean the tank for you. They’ve eliminated most of my algae as of recent.

​@@yummyyamyamAny pothos work! The most basic variety is the jade pothos but almost all of them are just variegations of that. Head to a Home Depot or somewhere, you can probably get a small one for a few books, and you're set!

I had read that it’s a thing they do when they’re looking for a breeding partner, they will swim around the tank and make sudden changes of direction.

Your shrimp are stressed. Find out the cause or they will continue to try and escape, and the stress can lead to failed molts, and those can be fatal. Amano shrimp should only really be swimming occasionally, doing laps around the tank, swimming into the filter outtake, and trying to escape the water means they're actively suffering. They're very sensitive little creatures.

yeah, your parameters are broken, also you have an open tank which means chemicals in the air from sprays etc can land in the water. to them they are basically trying to escape a burning building to us. setup looks new and not cycled, rip shremps

You need nitrifying bacteria if you arent going to cycle your tank before adding the poor shrimp. Also, those fish are going to torment them

I saw one hydra in my tank and I’m sure it will multiply, I feed my guppies live bloodworms from a water lotus fountain outside, which is probably where it came from, I would like to use LCA Planaria Fix in my tank (that also eliminates hydra) but I’m scared for my mystery snails in the tank? I also have some Ramshorn/Malaysian trumpet and bladder snails in the tank, along with guppies and cherry shrimp. The bladder snails go crazy with breeding so I don’t mind if I lose those but I was thinking If I put a lower dosage and that would keep the mystery snails safe?

they can live completely off the bacteria and algae on the surfaces of the tank. i also feed mine shrimp pellets. you can get those at most pet stores. hope that helps :)
