So excited to find your video! I began breeding Amanos in May, and successfully morphed about a dozen in the 1st round. I'd love to know how long you've been doing this and what your numbers are like (successfully transformed shrimp). I've tried two rounds since then and belive my algae was too overgrown, so both were pretty unsuccessful (maybe had a total of 8 that lived). About to attempt round 4 with three berried mommas - this time, less light and a sponge filter. I can't believe how little info is out there. Would love to chat about your experiences! 😁
@AvatarAquatics3 жыл бұрын
Yeah! My first batches I ended up with ~8 that morphed, but acclimation to freshwater killed them off using the 1/2 freshwater a day method. I hypothesize that it is the osmotic shock so I use the drip method to drip them into freshwater over the course of 24 hours. I’m currently working on seeing whether crushed fish flakes work(which would be easier to grow vs algae and 24 hr light) + rice bran as well as what salinity would be the best (there is a paper that states 17ppt + those foods are good that is a couple decades old). All this is taking some time because between waiting for my females to be berried and the limitations of my setup, it’s hard to get enough larvae. but a super awesome breeding project nevertheless:)

Great video ty so much for sharing. :) currently my baby amano shrmips are 4 weeks old, some grow bigger then others. this is my second try. this batch down from thousands to only 50+. here is what I learned so far. 1. Algae.....make sure you have some algae in the tank when u put them in, because they will need to eat after first few days. My first batch died starving. pure salt water and pure ocean water does not have any algae in them, you have to introduce them. I add spirulina powder third day to get algae going in the tank so my second batch can feed. Do not put too much spirulina power in the water. 2. Lighting.... light needs to be 24hrs on. I'm using a bottle and was point the light direct from top. with some air bubble I found out some shrimp flow to the surface and can't swim down I have to use dropper to drop water on them to force them down. but after change the light position point to the side, it become much better and not many shrimp come to surface any more. 3. Airstone..... at first I was adding lots of air to the tank, later found out its bad for shrimp by blowing them up to the surface. if water movement too strong they can't hold on the side to feed. so far I have only 50+ shirmp left, about 1 or 2 weeks to go, will see. I have 3rd batch ready soon, female will drop eggs pretty soon i think.

The only way salt could get into my aquarium is by feeding Brine shrimp to my fish, but that is a really small amount for a 20 gallon tank. Im happy but really confused. It is big, around 5-8mm. I also have 1 tiger shrimp in my aquarium, but it is just 1, so it couldn't be her baby. Thank you for the great video. I have tried breeding amano shrimps before l have watched this video. Things I Did wrong: 1. Did drip acclamation. Which took an entire Day or more to actually reach the targeted 24 ppt(I got the required ppt from another video). 2. Didn't prepare the salt water in advance. So no algae or diatoms. But I have powdered tiny bit of algae wafer and fed them. All dead in 1 Day. So what do you think made the most impact. Slow acclamation, ppt or the feed? Also I don't have access to sea water. So I have mixed sea salt (proper one) with fresh water. Will the diatoms and algae even grow in there naturally? I don't have access to buy them to start a culture.
@AvatarAquatics3 жыл бұрын
if they die in 1 day, I think water parameters is the problem. They should be fine if no food for 1 day. check your temperature, salinity(35ppt), drop them immediately from freshwater to 35PPT, dont acclimate. then make sure you have some water movement and that the bottom of the tank is clean. The last thing is if you do not have phytoplankton you can buy, ask around your local community if anyone has a saltwater tank. Ask them for some water from their tank and it should have some diatoms/algae for you to grow.

Do amano release all their fry at once or over a period of time. I am currently trying to save some fry with the help of this excellent guide. Just want to know when i should remove the mother into her normal tank. Today was the first day and i have counted about 15 to 20 fry. Should i wait a few more days to see if there are more or move her back. Thanks in advance if anyone has the answer.

Hi again! Ive managed to get some salt water from my local beach, but the salinity is 40 ppt, i was expecting this to be around 35, do you think this is too high and i should add ro water to lower it to 35? Thanks!
@AvatarAquatics3 жыл бұрын
yes you can add freshwater to hit 35ppt. just make sure your refractometer is calibrated well!

When setting up the salt water tank, does it need to cycle like a with fresh water before you put the fish in? Or is it possible to put the larvae in without first cycling for a few weeks ? Thanks!

@@AvatarAquatics Got two more questions. First, do you count 14-17 days after you first spot the eggs? Because my female is well over those days (day 22 now) and has not yet lost her eggs. Second, how much and how often do you feed them phytoplankton? Thanks in advance!
@AvatarAquatics4 ай бұрын
@@thomasdeer9184 depends on temperature of the water she is in, will speed up development if it’s warmer. Individual females tend to carry fully developed larvae still inside their eggshells and “trigger” them to spawn, so you can try it now and see if she will drop her eggs. Phytoplankton is always present inside the breeding container

Happened to notice hundreds of baby amanos in my tank today. With no salt equipment or experience I sucked them up with turkey baster and added some salt to a mason jar with an algae wafer. Bought a salinity tester and marine salt from nearby petstore and winging it in a spare tank. Longshot but you never know. Watching this video gave me a plan anyway!

Awesome! Thank you! I have got the females and caught the babies, but I read you were supossed to put them directly into the salt water at 35 ppt at once. Of course, they didn't make it. I have another female ready, so I couldn't have been more happy to find your video. On to Part 2! :)
@AvatarAquatics3 жыл бұрын
Mine do fine getting dropped into 35ppt directly from freshwater without an acclimation. you can also do the 3 min acclimation but just make sure you have the right temperature, no chlorine, and correct salinity.

If you can spare the extra money, you can buy salt to mix yourself online as well as the phytoplankton which will increase your yields. Will also need a refractometer and The products that I use are located in the description.

How many days from that the eggs was relased to they "spawn" to larve. 1week to 1,1/2 week? Great explanation step by step. (Now there are just 100 things that can go wrong...hahaha)

The shrimp zoeas are released and hatch immediately, but eggs takes 2-5 weeks to incubate in the pleopods of the female.

@@AvatarAquatics So if I have eggs left at the bottom of the freshwatertank they will NOT hatch, I have hade some zoeas that I did collect (30ish) and tryed to aclimate 3-5min and then into saltwater 1.02, all died after 1-15min?

@@Dennis.Nilsson temperature and chlorine are the biggest killers of zoea if they are dying within a few mins of going into saltwater. Remember to add dechlorinator.

Hi, I have a berried female amano, are there any signs to indicate that it is time to transfer her to another tank for her to lay her eggs? I have a 1 gallon container prepared for her, but I'm afraid if I move her over too early, it would stress her out.
@AvatarAquatics4 жыл бұрын
You kind of have to look at the babies under her and if you see little black dots (they are very tiny) on the eggs then it is time to move her
@chrislim48654 жыл бұрын
I can see the black dots on the eggs, but also see some whitish-orange eggs that don't have eyes. Any idea what they could be? Also, I only managed to prepare the water for the zoes about 3 days ago, and I still don't see any algae or diatoms growing. Is it possible for me to feed them some powdered fish food in the early stages?
@AvatarAquatics4 жыл бұрын
@@chrislim4865 white orange may indicate some unfertilized eggs. If you see black dots it may be time to transfer. And yes, but very little. Larvae in the first stage before molting don’t eat
@chrislim48654 жыл бұрын
@@AvatarAquatics Ah I see. Good to know that they don't feed in the first stage, may buy me some time to get more algae and diatoms growing in the container. Looking forward to part 2 of your video. Cheers~

Like the other replies. Black dots on the eggs means any day soon. Sometimes you can see a single larva or two hatched days earlier than the other. That's also a signal.
