Melissa Johnson On the Origins of “Dominican” The first recorded use of the word "Dominican" is found in a letter written by King Phillip IV of Spain in 1625 to the inhabitants of the Spanish colony of Hispaniola. In this letter, which was written before the arrival of French settlers on the Western side of the island, the King congratulates the "Dominicans" for their heroic efforts in defending the territory from an attack by the Dutch fleet. The term or demonym ("gentilicio") "Dominican" was used in reference to the Dominican Order - after their patron Saint Dominic - which had been a key institution and element in shaping the island's post-Columbian religious and civic identity for over a century. This letter can be found today in the "Archivo General de Indias" in Seville, Spain....

Dude, it's not that hard to understand. 👩🏾🏫 There are black people in America, there are black people in Latin countries. In the Latin countries and ESPECIALLY in the entertainment industry those black latin people (who call themselves Afro-Latino) are underrepresented. Have you ever watched Latin television? Show me the black people. Matter-o-fact show me the black people from Latin countries prominent in the American entertainment industry. What in the la la land kinda question is that Charlamagne? Especially as a dark-skinned black man ... you think descrimination based on skin color is all in someone's head. 😐 Then he brings up Cardi B. Sir, Cardi is not dark complexioned. That's like a black American saying there are no black superheroes and you ask "What about Gal Gadot?" 😐 Sir. (I keep updating this comment the more I watch) ... did he just ask what about Issa Rae? 😐 😐 😐 😐 😐 😐 😐 😐 A thousand 😐 😐 😐 😐 😐 s. LA.TIN. Charlamagne. 😐 At this point I think he's faking this. Black Film Guild I did notice her getting a little tongue tied when explaining but it’s hard to get an issue when two people are practically questioning your very valid passionate argument for 30 minutes. I just think my biggest disappointment comes from the fact that i expected so much for Uncle Charla and Envy. They are usually very woke and intellectual people. But today they acted like everyone else. “Oh i didn’t hear of this struggle, it must be just a youthing and not an actual issue” but like amara said, there are a plethora issues in the world that they do not know about bc of how little the Afro latinx community speaks out about it and how little the media covers that particular topic. As intellects and radio host, they should’ve done a better job at listening and trying to understand her point.

They said things like the Haitians deserved what they got. The earthquake should of killed all of the Haitians on the island, I don’t know why the Dominicans won’t just kick them off the island and other horrific shit. Me being a light skin Haitian looked at these bitches like they had three heads and told them I was from Haiti. The looked like they seen a ghost and continued to say I’m sorry. I told them no you not sorry, you just sorry that you said some fucked up shit in front of the wrong person and this is just one instance of the disrespect I’ve gotten and I’ve heard with my own ears on how Latino/a feel about black people.
@emg.92466 жыл бұрын
Sasha Victoria I understand that you may not feel this way about darkskin people but the majority of Latino/a do. The proof is all over Spanish networks. On telemundo you barely see women who look like Amara La Negra. You see women my color or lighter to represent Latin America and other Spanish speaking countries.
@sashavictoria24056 жыл бұрын
Emilee Gourdet sweetheart they are in high school! But for you to think every light skin person who is Latino thinks that way is ignorant!! I’ve encountered racism from every culture. But i don’t go around saying the MAJORITY just because Of the encounters I’ve had. I don’t know how old you are but I’m 30 and that’s like saying bc i live in a white town all white ppl Are racist... or bc I’ve been robbed by black ppl that they all steal. That was very wrong and ignorant for them to say.. Just please don’t give in to the hate and continue it. Also Haiti enslaved Dominicans for 22 years as well. There is a lot of back and forth with the country but Dominicans were the first ones in Haiti during the earth quake and the last ones out. So please don’t hate Dominicans just bc you heard ignorant people speak! That’s ludicrous.

DJ Envy and Charlemagne treated her so poorly. "why all Dominicans act like Cardi B??" 5 seconds arriving, "what are you??" How can they be so ignorant? Keep asking the same questions over and over shows they were unbothered to even listen to her responses. Two grown ass men, one who wrote a book and both interviewed many entertainers but never heard or can't understand the issues of colorism and beauty standards among women in the entertainment industry. or rather think it is all in her head cause there is a Issa Rae and a Sza (only can name just 2)? Don't understand that there is an American market and a Latino market of music and she is trying to break in the American market to be worldwide. The point was not who is Young Hollywood and that his comments doesn't matter cause he is a nobody. The point was his comments echoes what the entertainment industry as a whole have been telling her and other dark skin Latinas for years. How can it be about if the music is great then it don't matter and then say Cardi B is America's sweetheart when she don't write her own lyrics or mix her own sound and is being carried all the way. What is the difference between Cardi B. and the internet Cash Me Outside girl (Bhad Bhabie)?? Really??? Hell Cardi B. can't even write her own tweets. Light skin ratchness will always win over a poise dark skin female human being is what DJ Envy and Charlemagne was serving in this interview. it was disgusting. cindypltnm Dark skin AA women are usually so loud and rude. I'm not sure why. Everyone that I've ever spoken to about this will agree. It seems like a lot of people both men and women, black or white will agree that the average dark skin black woman has the nastiest attitude. They call it being "strong" but it's really a weakness They say people are "Intimidated" but we're really annoyed. When you tell them this they just call you a hater. It's as if no one can help them see the error of their ways.

I am a latina woman (Cuban) who HAPPENS to be black and I am pissed. Y'all really let me down with this one. How can you sit up there and really question if the struggles she's talking about are real?? YES they are, and then to reference Cardi-B (who is one person and also light skin) as "proof" of how far we've come. Amara repeatedly stated that she was specifically speaking about the Latin American world which I can personally say and know that in our communities, no matter how beautiful, talented or educated, you will always be the last option as a black woman and it usually goes unsaid to the point where many wmen of color accept it as they way it is. Charlemagne says "idk why image is still a big deal in 2018". It's becauseeee the world is still ignorant af to what people of color STILL go through just to be heard, seen or even considered. I was so happy for Amara to be given this platform to speak out and to hear you guys say "oh but it's a storyline right?" truly just hurt.

My words were specifically in regards to the ignorance in both Charlemagne and Envy’s comments. In Latin America we don’t really have anyone to really look up to in media as well as someone standing up for black rights at all so I was reaffirming her point from a personal view. Thank you

They way I understand Afro-latina is the difference between race and ethnicity. So if you’re African American, your race is African but you live in America so that’s the place where you’re from and you live which is your ethnicity. Men do care about the same things as women.
@raymanjohan88386 жыл бұрын
Being a dark man and having light male friends we deal with this issue differently. We poke fun at each other about it but I think thats just because our generation processes this problem differently. I always thought that everyone handled it like the men did. Im now beginning to understand that women dont see it the same as us. Most the men in our generation just accepted what we felt insecure about, learned to embrace it, and kept it pushing. We were wrong to assume that our women did the same.
@kianah5446 жыл бұрын
Rayman Johan While I agree that black men deal with it differently, I can’t agree that they aren’t insecure about it and have embraced it. Maybe they’ve embraced their own dark skin but that doesn’t mean they embrace dark skin in general. Just because black men don’t feel inferior because of their own color, doesn’t mean they don’t perpetuate colorism. There are plenty of dark black men who project their insecurities onto dark black women. And that black man won’t tell you he’s insecure about his color. He’ll show you. He’ll usually do this by treating dark skinned women with the same level of respect CTG and Envy treated Amara with. He’ll do it by consciously or subconsciously making sure his kids don’t look like him by seeking out white or mixed women. Or if you really want to know how he feels, look at the language he’ll use to bash a woman who ironically looks just like his mother. Shes ugly. Shes bald. She’s nappy headed. He’ll use her hair texture against her, and he’ll make clear that it’s a negative feature, the very feature he himself has, which indicates some sort of insecurity that he deals with. He may internally blame her for it too. If this man was your friend, I doubt he would admit that to you. Black women don’t tell black men who worship white women they hate themselves just to be dramatic. Or one of this example man’s favorite words to describe the black woman: “bitter”. It has real basis. You can’t be so sure that most black men embrace it. When black men are insecure about their blackness, they’ll often place it on the black women who look like them. Black men may have the same insecurity of dark skin. It’s just manifested in a different way.

Deidra James Funny I'm seeing your comment saying this because I've literally just been on Twirra 2 minutes ago and there was a tweet someone wrote saying Angela Yee is always quiet when female guests get attacked. The thing is, from my perspective, Angela really couldn't jump out the gate on this topic because she can't relate to Amara's stuggle as a "dark-skinned" black woman with an afro. So Angela's input would be very limited, of course. I find it interesting though that the person jumped on Angela Yee rather than coming at the 2 males who were attacking Amara! How do these 2 clowns sit up there talking all that "light skin vs dark skin" mess ALL THE TIME but now when Amara brings it up, they try to play it down and act dumb??

Coming up in the 80's I didn't know that Latinos; Cubans, Brazilians, Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, etc were dark. I only knew them as light like Rita Moreno, Rosie Perez, Raul Julia, and Ricky Martin or only as dark as Rosario Dawson or Luis Guzman, That was because TV and especially Latin TV only ever shows the white or light actors. But after I met a jet black man from Brazil I did my research and remembered that yes Africans were enslaved in those countries and their descendants were still there and no they had not been bred out. What he meant was so obvious he was saying straighten your hair. Hide your African
