A deep dive into Halley's Comet, as played by Phish at Hampton Coliseum in Hampton, Virginia on November 22, 1997 .
Other episodes of Anatomy of a Jam:
Went Gin - • Phish - Anatomy of a J...
Nassau Tweezer - • Phish - Anatomy of a J...
Island Tour Roses - • Phish - Anatomy of A ...
Jon Fishman's comment regarding this video (screenshot of :his original Facebook post) i.redd.it/vmt0...
The following quote comes from Richard Wright (formerly Nancy) regarding this episode:
"The two details that weren't so accurate weren't even about me (Rael One-Cloud wasn't a Goddard student; I met her at a Rainbow Gathering in 1988; & evil Shirley Temple was a girl). Again, I'm honoured. This is probably the closest thing to a documentary that'll ever be made about me."

kzbin.info/www/bejne/aX7dfaiHjbqYnpI I feel like the RCMH Ghost would work really well for your AOAJ series - lots of distinct sections leading to an amazing, but restrained, peak. This is honestly one that it took me years to truly appreciate.

Direct Quote from Jon Fishman regarding this video. "I have to say, this guy's ability to deconstruct exactly what's going on is spot on and his research and information presented regarding Richard Wright (also formerly known as Nancy) is exactly correct. I rarely watch Phish related things, but it's worth mentioning for fans our there who want insight that isnt' merely speculative that this guy's work is as solid as it gets. I appreciate its perspective. Thank you, sir."

Speaking of Fish, I’m kind of surprised he didn’t really get any mention during the jam analysis. He was doing some awesome stuff in there.

@@jjmah7 he made about 1 change. His foundation makes it possible but there's not much to say besides a beautiful, vibing groove.
@jjmah7
@jjmah7 5 жыл бұрын
@@givefit well i'm not exactly sure what you mean by 'change', because as a drummer there's a lot more to drumming - he actually changed his feel quite a lot to match what the boys were doing throughout. he and Trey are locked in tighter than most drummer/guitarist combos i have ever seen. i'm just saying he went super in depth with the tiny nuances of Trey, Page, and Mike, but not really for Fish. for example, what you just said about his groove is more than what we got here. don't get me wrong this video was amazing! it's maybe just a minor missed opportunity on amarguitar's part.
@givefit
@givefit 5 жыл бұрын
jjmah7 i don’t think armguitar is as knowledgeable about these drumming nuances to comment. Maybe you can be his consultant ;) I agree there are a bunch of little adjustments and well-placed accents that are worth noting.

Late to the game on this, but amazing analysis of the jam and I loved the history of "Nancy." Totally fascinating person and I would have loved to have been in that small circle of friends at Goddard/UVM. What an unexpected history-changing little hangout. And notwithstanding the complex structural arrangements you lay out, it's crazy that these guys just do this off the top of their heads. IMO a combination of a lot of hard work and a touch of something spiritual or cosmic, or I don't know what. But I'm gonna keep coming to shows to see if I can get to the bottom of it. Love to all phans.

These videos are amazing. The background info of how the song came about is one thing, but the analysis of the jam, the theory, and what each band member is doing to propel the improvisation is so interesting. When I'm driving listening to Phish this is what I'm trying to listen for. Having it right up on the screen is so fun. I'm playing along and learning so much. Please make more of these videos.

One minor thing I'd like to add to this (amazing!) analysis of Halley's is a mention of how Mike spends most of the song scat singing a bass line, while simultaneously playing a different melody on his bass guitar. This is no easy task, and is probably the main reason why it took the band months to learn how to play this song. :)

This was my 2nd show. I revisit this set all the time and as Haley’s was never one of my favs this version is absolutely spectacular! It’s mind blowing and in the moment literally changed the way I thought about music....forever! So grateful for that experience. 70 plus shows later, Hampton 97 is still one of my top 5 shows. Also Hampton 96 is underrated. That show was so much fun. I’m a little biased as it was my first show but worth a listen. Thanks for the great work on this channel. As a guitar player and lifelong phish fan your efforts are much appreciated. Keep it up brother🙌🏻

I have been listening to Phish since 1993 and saw my first show in 1995. I was at this show down front chanting for Destiny. Ever since, this particular jam has always remained in my top 5, if not top 3 all-time favorite improvisations that I have ever witnessed live or listened to recorded. I was absolutely stunned in awe of this jam when it happened right in front of me, and I still get goosebumps every time I relisten - it never gets old and it always makes me smile/laugh/cry. I've seen all your videos and love them all, but this one, my friend, is by far your absolute best work. I want to truly thank you from the bottom of my Being for what you've done for me. I am also a musician and improviser, and I know the modes/theory and absolutely love how you identify everything this amazing band does. You, sir, are a brilliant Human and kind Soul for putting so much work into these videos. Sending you LIGHT!

I like learning from your uploads. Being easily amused, and my slightly extreme addiction to Phish's live noises has left me witness over the years to more 'hippie rumors' than facts. I find your well organized deep dive always excellent, covering subjects that are extremely interesting. I first came across this odd family circa 1991 (junta). By 1993 there was no turning back. Thank You for simplifying important complex subjects. Teaching facts with clarity is a gift of gab that is rare! You, sir, have this in droves. Halley's has been credited to many over the years. I was on an overnight train ride between shows. Up all night in our boxcar was a cast of familiar folks attending European Summer Camp together. Just beginning 1998's Summer on way to Prague from Denmark. The Island tour was the subject of all our minds. Ironically the 6 of us sleepless freaks had the fortune of just experiencing the 4-night spring Run. While exploring what happened on the April 3rd [I had so much fun that night in Nassau County!?!]. The Subject was concentrated on the Carinilope and e) Carini>Halleys >Teeprise. One fellow monkey gave credit to Mike for writing the that on his own? I disagreed [while NOT knowing exactly whom the author was, I just knew it was written by a friend/student from School that was not Tom.] I was literally yelled at by my fellow monkeys for not being educated on everything Cactus 🌵. I let it go, we had no copy of farmers and no telephones. This would have been convenient at the time. I was curious to know the answer to an analytical lyric question concerning Carini. Wisconsin 1998, naked guy runs at Trey... UIC first time back since 1994, and first 3 night run in Chicago [Baker's Dozin's was not even fathomable in 1998!] "I saw Carini with the Naked dude, I couldn't eat my food. Was that the debut of this stapled lyric? SUNDAY 11/08/1998? Have they ever returned to... I saw you with Carini and that piece of ass You built your house with windows But those windows had no glass" I can't remember hearing it recently at all! Yet I've been on a strange Carini trip for 12 years now it seems when/wherever I jump in on a tour Carini is up to bat in the rotation league. It's almost uncanny how it's always time for Carini in my personal recent rotations. [I don't mind]. Thank You!

Yesssss, as always a brilliant video that I imagine took a lot of work to research and put together. So thanks a lot for doing it. -The bit about lyrics being an effect shaping the vocal instrument was a revelation to me. It explains to me why I've always perceived Halley's as having the most musical sounding lyrics I've ever heard. -I miss the funk siren -I gotta go find some more Lydian Phish. Props on the hat tip from Fishman, as well. I think the whole band would love your work.

Thank you Amar! You know what? 11/22/1997 is - perhaps - my favourite show EVER, mostly because of this Halley's and the Mike's. How about the Mike's from this show??! Or - if you wanna go pretty far back - there's a monumental Mike's Groove from 3/20/1992 that I believe is quite neglected. The Mike's is downright evil and the Weekapaug has a crazy improv section (along with some of the most blistering Trey solos I've ever heard). Thanks again for the great work!

Thank you, Kind Sir, and I'd like to say ....this is why I shout out your series to the haters of this magnificent Band, who choose to spew their ignorance with zealous rudeness simply because they don't understand. Your back stories here are so eye-opening and thorough. Fucking Bravo, Dude.....We walked onto the floor and the lights went down and the Mike's Song opener with Fish heavy on the drums got the show on the road as we weaved our way to the center of the floor halfway between stage and soundboard. That's where we stayed the entirety of that special evening inside Mothership. I didn't quite realize it then, but I know now how Very Blessed everyone there was to witness what we did..Fri night's beasty AC/DC Bag & jaw dropping(for me, anyway) Emotional Rescue and Sundays show in NC.
