No clever top paragraph this time. Sorry to the people who like all the funny edits in the videos, this one doesn’t really have those. Also sorry that the outro audio is so low, wasn't really in a loud talking mood & if I boosted the sound too much it would’ve distorted the audio waveforms. That’s all - have a great day. Anyway just like with the previous videos, KZbin was shooting me like Aaron Burr over the music AND the visuals so I had to make some cuts to the songs & cover it with text (this was the least intrusive editing method I could find that they’d accept). I posted the entire intact reaction (full songs, no text covering the visuals etc.) on my patreon here www.patreon.com/posts/117996225 if you’re interested, but if not I’d suggest pulling up the soundtrack & playing it own your own so you can hear the INSANITY of what I’m hearing in full lol. PLEASE DO NOT SPOIL MAJOR PLOT POINTS IN YOUR COMMENTS (or at least start your comment with "spoilers" so I know to avoid it)! It takes away the point of future reactions if you just tell me everything that happens later so instead let me experience it during the process of watching Hamilton myself. I have moderators who are scanning the comments & deleting spoilery comments so don’t leave spoilers cause it will just get removed anyways. Lastly if you see others leaving comments that include spoilers please reply to it indicating that it has spoilers so I know not to read it, thank you in advance. You literally hiding your face when confronted with Eliza's pain is a mood, actually When Burn gets to me that way (like it always does), I like to listen to First Burn, an earlier draft of the song that they released by having different actors who performed the Eliza role sing it together. 100% - what the heck are people even doing here if they don't want an honest reaction? One of the worst Hamilton reactions I ever saw there was just a total lack of empathy as to how Eliza felt, and a total lack of interest in any time women had the spotlight (except Maria Reynolds, go figure). I love that Amari has empathy and isn't afraid of expressing it.

And so here we are, at the point LMM discovered so early in the biography of Hamilton that made him immediately conceive of Hamilton as a rap/hip-hop musical -- that just like the great rappers coming up in the 80s and 90s and further on - he rose (and fell) on the strength and power of his writing. Lin said that his story is the embodiment of hip-hop. He wrote himself out of poverty, wrote himself out of anonymity, wrote himself into marriage and power and position and control and wealth and fame -- and then wrote himself into disaster.

"I was a music major for the first part of college, was active in playing music and dancing for two decades, and you explained time signatures better than I have ever heard them explained (and definitely better than when I tried to explain them myself.)" This honestly means SO much! I tried REALLY hard to balance communicating the topic at hand in a digestible way while also not losing all of the people who came in with musical knowledge already. "I truly hope that you passion and knowledge for music is contagious to those who watch your videos and those around you." Everyone around me is either a musician (some of which have been playing for longer than I've been alive) or some super crazy music fan. I literally have zero close relationships with casual music fans and it's not even intentional, but probably a bi-product of my interests & jobs and in turn where I meet people/the kinds of people I meet.

"And you're paronoid in every paragrap how they preceive you. You. You. You...." That was the part that broke me the first time I saw this. The way she keeps emphasizing "You" over and over, Eliza realizing just how SELFISH of a person that the man that she loved is. He was only thinking about himself when he wrote that 95 page pamphlet for the world to read. He's sooo worried about being seen a certain way by his peers, about his reputation being severely tainted, that he didn't even think about what all of this would do to his wife and his children. All because of his obsession with his legacy. To him, nothing else mattered and this was her finally realizing it. It's all about him. And you can hear it in her voice in the way the keeps repeating "You". Eliza the Cinnamon Roll, Ladies & Gentlemen 😭😭😭...

personally mine is between "Freewill" by Rush and "System" by Brotherly (an underground electronic/math rock band that you should totally check out, most of their songs are great if you are into complicated music and music theory in general. their other song I would recommend is "The Code") Freewill is in alternating 6/4 and 7/4, at least for its main riff, it does go into sections with other time signatures (including probably my favorite solo of all time, in 12/8) System is really musically cool because it's in 6/4 and 4/4 (I hear it more as 8/8) *simultaneously* for most of the song. essentially, it uses swing and triplet grooves to its advantage to make polyrhythmic (whoa vocab word! it just means different amount of beats in the same time frame) undertones and have insanely smooth time signature switches. just listen to the intro and first verse and you will know what i'm talking about (at least relating to the time sig switches, the polyrhythms and simultaneous time signatures are harder to find if you don't know them already. hint: the riff is playing 8th notes in 4/4, not quarter note triplets in 6/4) Thank you for coming to my TedTalk. Moral of the story: go check out Brotherly

👑 Amari, it was hard to see you struggle through Burn. It truly is a fantastic exploration of her struggle and the way Hamilton’s good (and bad) qualities rub on off someone as pure and lovely as Eliza, and the added element of truly not knowing how Eliza felt or thought in real history and LMM using that to his advantage (similarly to the room where it happens, where there was no account for what the parties involved truly discussed) is just another reason this show is one of the GOATs. And also a fun fact for you regarding the staging of Burn, the crew actually tested multiple types of paper for their prop letters so Eliza could burn them literally on stage and the flame would last the exact time frame of her being on stage! You can't even look at her, like you feel exactly what she is feeling. I can't help but think it goes back to what you were saying in the other reaction about you understanding the type of Love Alex needs, and now he's just thrown that away. "Burn" is such a powerful performance. When Angelica returns, Lin wrote a whole song for her to confront Alex. Then he cut it because he thought Eliza's response needed to take precidence. You should watch the cut song "Congratulations". Its the rage side of the grieving process we all need for catharsis. Great reaction as always. Great catch on the time signature

Because the three songs are absolutely devastating. Don’t feel bad for being “wrecked” - I think most people are wrecked by this part of the musical. I don’t know how many times I’ve watched the musical now, and I’ve listened to the cast album an innumerable amount more times, and it still gets to me.

My favorite bit in The Reynolds Pamphlet is Angelica singing "You'll never be satisfied - GOD I hope you're satisfied" Because Angelica is usually clever with her words. But what Alexander did is so monumentally stupid to her that she temporarily ran out of words and kinda repeated herself. Also: Angelica loved her sister so much, she couldn't imagine anyone doing something this horrible to her. So this is extremely devastating to Angelica. She pushed this couple together thinking it'll make Eliza happy - but then it didn't.

Since Hurricane is happening in ham’s mind, Burrs “wait for it” is telling Ham to stop, wait, and think before you do something that you are going to regret-ie. the reynolds pamphlet. The video essay “Hamilton and Motifs” explains the wait for it motif brilliantly

I appreciate how knowledgeable about music theory you are. You pick up on motifs and themes that I didn't pick up until my fourth or fifth listen, and even bringing up some things I have never noticed! Keep at it, I can't wait for you to finish the show! I also think you should try to watch it all in one sitting (even just for yourself) for the emotional impact going from song to song.
@alizapanitz68917 күн бұрын
Historical factoid: You talked about knowing people who have burned letters, and how emotional that can be, but in the 1700s and 1800s it was an even more deeply symbolic action, as the letters were often all people really had to preserve their emotions by. The music theory bits are always welcome, you by your training see things that people who just enjoy music on the surface cannot. You didn't ask for an emoji, but this seemed fitting: 💔 And you nailed it about Hamilton's ego being the source of both his rise and fall. I know you're nowhere near the end, and I'm trying to avoid spoilers, but at the end I'd love to hear you talk about what the highlights for you were musically, thematically, emotionally, and story wise.

As long as we're talking about time signatures, the beginning of "Meet Me Inside" is actually in 7/8 (the 'Lee do you yield?..." part) It was sort of a homage to Andrew Lloyd Webber (a major broadway composer) who has has a habit of writing one song per show in a fast 7/8.
@AmariLeone18 күн бұрын

Quick comment, before I continue watching, a little thing I hadn't noticed before watching these specific songs in sequence and you pointed out that there's a big contrast between the songs: that ties in with the theme. Hurricane is the calm before the storm, the Reynolds Pamphlet is the moment the storm hits, Burn is the quiet devastation after the storm passes. EDIT: ok, no emoji then

Love getting your genuine feelings on all of this. Reminds me of the first time I heard this (my friend had a listening party when the original cast album dropped--no Disney+ video, and even living in NY you couldn't get tickets (at least not as a broke-ass twenty-something)). vis a vis Burr in Hurricane, I actually take him as more sympathetic than I usually would. Because this is one moment where Hamilton could have benefitted from Burr's caution. The 'wait for it' to me feels almost plaintive, desperate for Hamilton to just take a beat before blowing up his whole life. Just my two cents. Thank you, as always.

I really felt this reaction. You said that "it must have been hard back then" but that's the thing. Infidelity and ramifications transcend time. If you've been through it, you feel Burn differently. SO MANY THINGS TO Say - “THAT’S SO DOPE” YAAAAS! The swirling staging of the Hurricane, and the fact that all of the things that represent his stable life… family career and home… being lifted and spun out and away from him. Also - Mariah Reynolds is behind him… lit in a different color… haunting him… as he makes his decision to write the Reynold’s pamphlet. Watching King George (who has been on stage the entire time since his last appearance) doing the gleeful dance to ‘he’s never gonna be president now’ kills me every time. And MAN… I have been hurting for you in advance, knowing what was coming with BURN. There isn’t one time that is has not WRECKED me. I can’t wait until you release the next part! I’ve been on the Hamilton bandwagon since 2009 after I watched LMM perform at the White House when Hamilton was first thought of as just an album. I’m a huge history nerd, lover of Washingtonian politics, and currently work in a space that interacts with the Treasury Department regarding foreign trade so I’ve always had an interest in Hamilton. I took my wife to see Hamilton and she went in blind without any understanding of the history or plot of the play and she came away very emotional from it. I can’t wait to hear your thoughts as the story progresses to the end.

I appreciate your sense of not wanting to "cheapen" the rawness of Burn. It does feel almost sacred to have this intimate a moment with Eliza when she's had her world ripped apart. I love your respect for her character. And, yes, the tragedy of this unnecessary end to a brilliant man's career - if he had just kept it in his pants, who knows what more he might have done. But he's always been reckless, and until now, he's always gotten away with it.
