The Story of Tonight was that I edited this video with a migraine so bad I was seeing 3 Amaris on screen sooooo of course instead of feeling Helpless, I made it my editing magnum opus & I didn’t even have Washington On My Side! As I don’t have a Right Hand Man, I had to work Non-Stop to ensure you all would be Satisfied that I didn't throw away My Shot. And before you lecture me to take better care of myself, put your Guns & Ships away, as there was simply no time to Take A Break even with a pounding headache because that’s what you do when you want to be in The Room Where It Happens! Anyway this video is like 83.7% me ranting in the outro soooooo Meet Me Inside Part 13 & make sure to Wait For It! Hopefully you’ll like the video so much that You’ll Be Back to see What Comes Next! I mean you don't want to be asking What'd I Miss do you!? [Insert Enough Other Hamilton References Here To Make You Think I’m Clever]! 😎 P.S. If I see any Short People slander in these comments you better grab a friend, that’s your second, because there’s a reckoning that will be reckoned!!! And I'll have know that I am backed by an army of minions! 😤 Anyway just like with the previous videos, KZbin was shooting me like Aaron Burr over the music AND the visuals so I had to make some cuts to the songs & cover it with text (this was the least intrusive editing method I could find that they’d accept). I posted the entire intact reaction (full songs, no text covering the visuals etc.) on my patreon here www.patreon.com/posts/117486864 if you’re interested, but if not I’d suggest pulling up the soundtrack & playing it own your own so you can hear the INSANITY of what I’m hearing in full lol. PLEASE DO NOT SPOIL MAJOR PLOT POINTS IN YOUR COMMENTS (or at least start your comment with "spoilers" so I know to avoid it)! It takes away the point of future reactions if you just tell me everything that happens later so instead let me experience it during the process of watching Hamilton myself. I have moderators who are scanning the comments & deleting spoilery comments so don’t leave spoilers cause it will just get removed anyways. Lastly if you see others leaving comments that include spoilers please reply to it indicating that it has spoilers so I know not to read it, thank you in advance. Anyways make sure to check out the other parts here kzbin.info/www/bejne/n4mQnIyfe6p4rLs & subscribe not to miss future parts! 🦁❤💛

since that four note violin opening motif finally came back again, a fun fact about it: in lin's book breaking down hamilton and talking about its making, he describes that motif as a "door creak." i've noticed that every song that uses it is in some way "opening the door" on a new aspect of hamilton's life-in right hand man it's his military career, in a winters ball it's his romantic life, in guns and ships it's his success and being truly respected, and now with the adam's administration it's sort of opening the door of his downfall. it's such a cool one i love motifs that are in the orchestration rather than the singing but still have meaning.

Burr, Jefferson, and Madison accused Hamilton of "speculation," which nowadays we call "insider trading." To make a looooooong story short, Hamilton knew that the new US government was going to consolidate the debt from the revolutionary war. Instead of each individual state paying only what they owed, they lumped it all together and shared the debt (like when you go to dinner with a huge group - instead of getting individual checks, you get one total and divide it equally). People (aka, wealthy white men) had the option to buy bonds, basically a share in the budding US economy, and potentially resell them later for a profit. TONS of congressmen at that time did that. It wasn't technically illegal, but it was slimy. THAT'S what they're accusing Alex of. They thought he was working with some guy named Reynolds to make a quick buck. They had NO IDEA about any marital cheating Alex had done AT ALL. He just straight up came right out with it. LMM does a great episode on Drunk History about this whole thing, but don't watch it until after the next reaction! 🌹

Hamilton's beef with Adams was rooted in a mutual animosity towards one another that grew and grew over the course of Washington's presidency. Hamilton was from the Caribbean and worked his way up the social and economic ladder meanwhile Adams was true blue New England elitist. Despite their political alignment, the two were both arrogant and constantly butted heads. Hamilton was the leader of the Federalists, and when Adams became president he discovered that his cabinet (which he mostly kept the same from Washington's) was full of Federalists who would default to the party leader (Hamilton) for suggestions rather than the literal president (Adams himself). There is a whole lot more to it than this but that's my take on the gist of it. Someone else in the comments here recommended the John Adams show on HBO and I want to second that. It's pretty good and the latter episodes have some great Hamilton-Adams interactions.

🌹Burr definitely internalized everything about Hamilton and made him the villain of his story. Mainly due to Hamilton's success in everything that Burr wanted for himself and their line from "Right Hand Man" "Yes sir, we keep meeting." They just keep running into each other in everything they do, even up to working next to door to each other as lawyers and being on Washington's cabinet. I like how Burr's introductions of Hamilton go from bewilderment and questioning tone (how does a bastard orphan) to straight up vitriol as the play goes along. All the whole Hamilton is honey badgering his way through life just looking at his goal and no one else and thinking they are friends.

"Burr definitely internalized everything about Hamilton and made him the villain of his story....All the whole Hamilton is honey badgering his way through life just looking at his goal and no one else and thinking they are friends." Exactly! For me this is the big distinguisher; malice. Alex is abrasive, selfish and admittedly a bad friend BUT he’s not TRYING to stifle Burr. He’s just doing him and in the process stepping on Burr’s toes (along with literally everyone else lmao). Meanwhile Burr is focused ON Hamilton & making moves AGAINST him intentionally which irks me cause well I spent 9 minutes explaining why lol.

Slightly off-top, but in the comedy 'Ghosts', (some tiny spoilers re Ghosts, not Hamilton) the ghost Isaac Higgintoot has a similar rabid envy of Hamilton; who he knew. Priceless scene where Sam (the living who can see them) says, 'There's one dressed like Hamilton!' and Isaac goes, 'How do you know about Hamilton? Did that little twerp become famous?' 'There's even a musical about him!' Higgintoot wails, at one point, and demands Samantha, the 'living' who can see them, write his own biography and 'turn that book into an award-winning Broadway musical!' There's an ep where the ghosts watch the Disney film and are all raving about it and misquoting the lyrics, and Isaac goes, 'It was...fine.' (:

I did cheat on A though, and watched some other Hamilton reacts while waiting for this one to drop. (Didn't know how to say No to This, because impatient having to Wait For It) He is head and shoulders above any other one. His musical acumen and education combined with his sense of humour (and nice teeth!) and innate wit, and personable delivery, puts him in front. There are some who have the music chops but not the personality, some who just say 'damn' and laugh all the way through, a majority who just don't get enough out of it, etc etc, but A. ticks all the boxes. Washington didn't resign. He just didn't run for a third term. Hamilton did resign. He wasn't Treasury Secretary any longer a couple years before Adams was elected, so Adams did not fire him. Not sure how many songs you will do next, but DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES split up "Blow Us All Away", "Stay Alive (Reprise), and "It's Quiet Uptown". They need to be all heard together for the full impact.
@federicosamsa29 күн бұрын
I think Part 14 will be "Hurricane", "The Reynolds Pamphlet" & "Burn", Part 15 will have the three you mentioned, Part 16 "The Election of 1800". "Your Obedient Servant" & "Best of Wives and Best of Women" and then Part 17 will be the last two. Clearly splitting up the climax from The Election of 1800 all the way to the end is a crime against anything that's just, but I get that otherwise the last video would be 12 hours long

I say it every time, but *another* fantastic reaction 🌹 Obviously I’m aware of Lin’s prowess but you’ve made me appreciate the complexity in ‘We Know’ to a whole new level now! I enjoyed your Hamilton-Burr rant. I think another great thing about this show (certainly in the 2nd half) is that the characters are presented in all their greyness: not specifically ‘good’ or ‘bad’. As you say, people respond to different events/characteristics in different ways depending on their own personal experiences. I also think there’s a thing in fandoms that, the more they engage, people tend to gravitate away from the main characters. (Ask me my favourite Star Wars character and I’ll say it’s some random character that appears in the background of episode IV for about 20 seconds!) I also think there’s often a ‘contrarian’ positioning on the internet: declare your love for the ‘villain’ for the shock value and engagement! Burr here is being classic Burr - and the thing we often hate about modern politicians: in both his ‘room where it happens’ & ‘both know what we know’ responses he’s giving a non-answer. As others have said - yes, he could be referring to Theodosia & the British soldier in the latter but it could also be considered a threat. It’s very much open to Hamilton’s interpretation. I’m not even sure it’s intentional on Burr’s side - that’s just how he is - but however it plays out no one can ever point to what he said and say he went back on his word.
@AmariLeone28 күн бұрын
Graham this whole comment is fact after fact, great point after great point. Your point about gravitating away from main characters as you dive deeper into the fandom, also makes me think of how music fans will often down play how good the most popular songs of their fav artist is in an attempt to prove they're a real fan & appreciator of the DEEP cuts - not in a malicious way but usually subconsciously. On your point about Burr being very political with his non-answer the first thing that popped into my head was the tendency of "strategic ambiguity" practiced by many politicians in the realm of geopolitics.

Always a delight to see the brilliant Amari has dropped another reaction to Hamilton here on KZbin. 🌹🦁👑 Wonderful insights as ever. If you have seen (or ever see) the film Amadeus, Burr's envy of Hamilton seems to parallel Sallieri's animosity toward Mozart. Each is jealous of the natural gifts and talents of the other, when they feel they work so much harder and don't achieve the same success - so the venom seems out of proportion to what's been done to them. Take care of yourself - get rest!

Again, this was chef's kiss. I never paid much attention to how shady Burr was being here. I agree that Burr is kinda obsessed with Alex and is actively going after him. Keep the rants coming 😂

" I agree that Burr is kinda *obsessed* with Alex" Mariah Carrey starts playing ominously in the distance lol

Absolutely loving your commentary on this show!!!! Every time I see your uploads on Sundays I know I’m gonna have a good video to listen to as I work the next day 🤭 Do you think you’ll continue reviewing musicals/their OST’s? What about video game OST’s? I’m autistic, and this stuff absolutely fulfills my mental stimulation needs! I cannot express the joy I get hearing you pick apart the emotions and tone through the first few notes of a song. It’s absolutely magical

🌹Hi Amari! Long time all-the way through the outro watcher, first time commenter. "... this musical requires discussion, requires you to feel, think... " 💯 I love the Burr character in this musical for his complexity, not just Leslie Odom Jr.'s masterclass performance. But, your right! Each character has their own level of complexity and the show is designed for us, the audience to sympathize with Hamilton. Fun (no spoilers!) fact: During his term as Senator, Burr voted to abolish slavery and for women's suffrage. It's just one of the (many!) things that made him enemies.

"🌹Hi Amari! Long time all-the way through the outro watcher, first time commenter." I really appreciate you breaking from your norm & taking the time to comment. Know that if you ever feel like commenting again I will 100% respond again (unless I unfortunately don't see it). "I love the Burr character in this musical for his complexity, not just Leslie Odom Jr.'s masterclass performance. But, your right! Each character has their own level of complexity" Tbc I am enjoying following the story of how he, Alex & the others helped birth the US & as a character he is SO much more complex, nuanced & interesting by being flawed, but simultaneously on a personal level he irks me sometimes lmao. "During his term as Senator, Burr voted to abolish slavery and for women's suffrage. It's just one of the (many!) things that made him enemies." IRL Burr a legend in my book just for this!!! 🫡

🌹I love seeing your reactions to this! You are so lively and hype, plus you give me a better appreciation for Lynn and his lyrical talents. A little context that might help with the confusion: when John Adam’s fired Hamilton, he was insulting and racist, so Hamilton not only cussed him out, but he published his rant against the president. Because he has such a way with words and a lot of public sway. So Madison and Jefferson looked at how a single statement from Hamilton had swayed public opinion, and saw a serious wild card that was gonna cause Problems. In a delicate new democracy, they saw his public criticism of the president as shaking his ability to lead the country. 🥀

🌹 First thing in the morning and I see you post and it’s, like, “Ok….here we go, Monday!” Love to hear your breakdowns. I think everybody has that one person that just rubs them the wrong way for whatever reason. Hamilton is that person for Burr. Hamilton gets everything Burr wants. Ut doesn’t even matter that he works his butt off to rise up. Envy. Jealousy. Those feelings rot Burr’s soul.

The way the King sings in "RP" which is "Received Pronunciation, it's something that has changed over time but it was basically how the "upper class" would sound, I'm not sure if it actually existed in the time of George but it's certainly been a thing through the 20th Century. There's a lot more to be said about it but I am not a linguist so anything I tell you is Wiki regurgitated.

Jonathan Groff as the King is hilarious, and in this section the moment when Burr comes in and starts to talk about Hamilton and John Adams and turns and sees the king dancing in his seat, it makes me wonder if Leslie Odom didn't realize the King was going to be there. Cracks me up! (Comment 2 of probably several!)

LOVE your analysis about King George. Nothing changes but the words because he's the old guard and knows nothing different. It's why he questions Washington stepping down. Democracy, at its inception was so new and visionary and misunderstood. Almost 250 years later I think we need to analyze who the "new" "old guard" is.
@AmariLeone29 күн бұрын
Yeah as I started to think about it I was like from the King's perspective, democracy is as foreign as having a forever monarch ruler is to me as a modern American
@hybridstrength169729 күн бұрын
@@AmariLeone Agreed. And I'm not getting political but if you think about all of the arguments and debates about how government should be structured that are referenced in Hamilton, I'm sure that many "pillars" of democracy will be discussed in some way over the next 10 years as we decide what kind of country we want to be.

6:05 “Next to Washington they all look small” - another short joke (as Washington was 6’2” I think?) but also figuratively, because (as you kind of touched on) I wouldn’t want to follow a legend like Washington - after all that, who could compare? (Maybe there’s something else to be said about Chris Jackson’s immense singing/rapping talent in there as well?) 10:47 You wondered why Burr was looking like that, almost laughing - maybe he was reacting to the king, but I also think he was being super smug about Alex's misfortunes, like he was doing at the beginning of Say No to This. (This section is also a big deal because Washington was such a supporter of Hamilton - his retirement would likely rock Alex’s world.) I’m sure someone else has said this but LMM has said Adams never appears (even the weird distorted voice calling him “creole bastard” is not a “real” voice) because Adams spent so much time away from DC. 11:50 I also think “you fat motherf**ker” is a Tupac reference, but I’m not a student of hip hop so someone can correct me if I’m wrong! (But it’s doubly cool, to have a classic musical from the 60s and a classic hip hop referenced in the same line! Worlds colliding, as usual.) Ok now *I’ve* talked too much! 😆 Also 🌹🌹!

I want to START this comment by saying no Erin, you in fact did NOT talk too much 😤 "another short joke (as Washington was 6’2” I think?) but also figuratively, because (as you kind of touched on) I wouldn’t want to follow a legend like Washington - after all that, who could compare? (Maybe there’s something else to be said about Chris Jackson’s immense singing/rapping talent in there as well?)" All great points but I want to focus on that first part because I now support John Adams even more 🫡😹 "but I also think he was being super smug about Alex's misfortunes, like he was doing at the beginning of Say No to This" I- I have no words but that you are egging me on like Burr did to TJ now! All future rants are your fault 😭 #ITakeNoResponsibilityForMyActions "because Adams spent so much time away from DC" Oooh good point "But it’s doubly cool, to have a classic musical from the 60s and a classic hip hop referenced in the same line! Worlds colliding, as usual" The beauty of this musical!
