Part 15 is honestly just tears, screaming & cursing. That’s it. You’ve been warned. I decided to take the complete opposite approach from the last video with the editing, by choosing to inject as much funny into the sadness with edits as I could manage, mostly because I needed the pick me up (been going through a lot mentally-emotionally as of late) & my edits make me laugh - hopefully they do the same for you as well. P.S. Lmao at the fact that Hamilton has my thumbnails looking like Quasimodo at this point 😭 (by the way I had to google the hunchback's name since I haven't seen this since I was like 5 lol)💀 Anyway just like with the previous videos, KZbin was shooting me like Aaron Burr over the music AND the visuals so I had to make some cuts to the songs & cover it with text (this was the least intrusive editing method I could find that they’d accept). I posted the entire intact reaction (full songs, no text covering the visuals etc.) on my patreon here www.patreon.com/posts/118460731 if you’re interested, but if not I’d suggest pulling up the soundtrack & playing it own your own so you can hear the INSANITY of what I’m hearing in full lol. PLEASE DO NOT SPOIL MAJOR PLOT POINTS IN YOUR COMMENTS (or at least start your comment with "spoilers" so I know to avoid it)! It takes away the point of future reactions if you just tell me everything that happens later so instead let me experience it during the process of watching Hamilton myself. I have moderators who are scanning the comments & deleting spoilery comments so don’t leave spoilers cause it will just get removed anyways. Lastly if you see others leaving comments that include spoilers please reply to it indicating that it has spoilers so I know not to read it, thank you in advance. “Forgiveness” makes me cry every time too. It is so poignant because of where we are as a people. We don’t extend grace or forgiveness for small things let alone betrayal on this magnitude. If you are interested, I really do recommend Ron Chernow’s biography on Alexander Hamilton. Lin was reading it on vacation (!) and was inspired. You get some details that the musical had to gloss over - like why it was thought that Hamilton committed a crime in the Reynolds’s situation. There are a few things they twisted for the sake of the story. One is that Alex was actually a loving dad. A visitor once remarked that it is shocking to see the Treasury Secretary sitting on the floor playing with the children. That wasn’t the norm then. Eliza was also his helpmate, writing down some of his works when his ideas were flowing but his hand cramped up.

🤗🫂Okay, this is a long-ish story about the astonishing power of "It's Quiet Uptown." "Hamilton" was workshopped in 2014 at the Public Theater, where it also made its Off-Broadway debut in 2015 (moving to its Broadway home at the Richard Rogers Theatre late that year). During workshops, songs are added, cut, expanded, moved, etc., so in essence Lin was still writing the show during the workshop period (the first "on its feet" workshop was Act I, which was all he had completed at the time). I'm sure others have suggested the workshop recording as one of the things for you to listen to after you finish the show (it's here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nanGp4qnic2Jh8U). "Hamilton" got there via the Public's artistic director, Oskar Eustis, who had been shown Lin's performance of the title song at the Obama White House (which is another clip I'm sure you'll be watching: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jX-pl2qkgq56pKc). Eustis spent three years trying to convince Lin to bring "Hamilton" (then called "The Hamilton Mixtape" and not imagined as a stage show at all) to the Public. He finally won Lin over, the workshopping commenced, and Lin got going on Act Two. A few months later, Oskar Eustis's 16-year-old son, Jack, committed su1c1de. Lin had just finished writing "It's Quiet Uptown." He made a demo .mp3 and emailed it to Oskar and his wife just a few hours after Jack was gone. From an article in the New York Times: “There is nothing you can say,” Mr. Miranda recalled thinking. “And yet, I had a song about this. So I wrote to him saying, ‘If this is useful, then lean on it, and, if not, delete this email.’” Mr. Eustis and his wife found it useful. “Every line of ‘Quiet Uptown’ feels like it’s exactly correct to my experience,” Mr. Eustis said. “It was the only music we listened to for a long time, and we listened to it every day, and it became a key thing for the two of us.” Can you imagine.
@cobramcjingleballs9598 күн бұрын
From reading Chernow, to tracking the development of Hamilton from Lin sending (basic) mp3s to gauge Ron’s reaction, to it being workshopped by the brilliant Eustis at The Public, I thought I could be surprised by any new background. To learn this was moving. Thank you.

One of my favorite things about "It's Quiet Uptown" that I really don't know if anybody has pointed out yet (I haven't seen it in the comments, anyway) is that after Alex's apology to Eliza, there's a gap before her response that points out that he's putting real effort into repairing their relationship over weeks and months ("he is trying to do the unimaginable"). I also didn't see him using her own words as manipulative, per se, but more actually acknowledging her point of view for the first time- and that's part of why she forgives him. In Hurricane, he thinks of her as a prize, of sorts ("I wrote Eliza love letters until she fell.") Instead of that, now he's thinking about the things she's genuinely said to him that he ignored. He's trying to reach out to her on her level, as a person he loves. Philip's death teaches him that he doesn't only take pride in having married a rich girl- he loves Eliza, and he screwed up. He puts all of his willpower into making himself better for her, and she appreciates it.

Sorry....gotta comment again......(Former Theatre Teacher here.....when you say...."they didn't need to do all of this." It made me thing of a quote by a famous playwrite named Thornton Wilder...and he said this in 1956. "Theater is the "greatest of all art forms" because it is the most immediate way for a human being to share their experience with another, as it is always happening "on stage" in the present moment, allowing for a direct connection between the performer and the audience. He also felt that theater has the unique ability to confront difficult realities of life and strengthen our capacity to face them." Before this became a movie, the sound track came out and I would used the lyrics and just youtube videos of those lyrics and lead my students through the play. I was working in a "Title I" school, which means many single parented underprivileged households. It was also a school that had severly limited resources, and so 1600 students had few electives courses to chooose from. Art, Choir, Band Drama......so my class would be filled with students who had NOT INTEREST in theatre at alll. When I taught this show......my toughest, most disrespectful, most hardened students would be sobbing in the back of the room at this part. Hence, my belief in Thornton Wilder's quote.

I believe I watched a Howard Ho analysis where he mentioned it was the theme of conflict (though this may have been from the playbook notes, I don't remember). The obvious places we hear it is the duels, introduced in 10DC, but we also hear it in the cabinet battles and when Philip is "arguing" with Eliza on how the scales should be played.

Alex and Eliza had six other children, four sons and two daughters, when Phillip died. They had one more son born a year after, who they also named Phillip in memory of their oldest. Also, for the record, Eliza had already reconciled with Alexander before Philip's death, their second daughter, Eliza, being born two years after the Reynolds Pamphlet was published. So a bit of dramatic license there on the part of Lin.

A little detail, when Alex shows up to Philip's hospital room: Philip keeps telling him how he did just as Alex told him. Alex repeats "Shh, I know, I know." Not just to "save his strength," but also because that advice got him killed. Not only was he dueling (as his father would, but his mother would NOT), but he did the "honorable" thing of aiming for the sky, making himself a sitting duck. He even does a quick look around, as if to make sure Eliza isn't here to hear his damning statements.

Now that I finished the video 🫂 38:15 when you talk about the whole sympathy and empathy thing it really made a lot of sense but I liked it because I knew there was an upcoming moment ( 39:36) that would hit. I swear EVERYONE breaks at the 🎶 Forgiveness 🎶 moment because that's something the greater majority of us empathize with. Forgiveness is something most of us desperately want in our hearts, whether we want it from loved ones for mistakes we make or from ourselves from disappointments we have had or in a existential spiritual way, we CRAVE forgiveness. So when Eliza, in a place of the deepest grief and despair, extends to Alexander her forgiveness it's almost like something magical. She gives him such grace when he most needs it, so off pop the waterworks for everyone because we all want that grace ourselves. I know it breaks me EVERY time, despite being able to struggle through Philip's actual death scene without tears. Btw for the cast recording, Eliza's scream at the end of "Stay Alive (Reprise)" is cut out, they end in quiet before the next track. They did it on purpose so people who went to see the live show after hearing the songs on recordings would still have a powerful emotional moment to surprise them. I listened to the recordings first, and yep, when I watched the Disney+ version the scream caught me off guard enough to bust tears out of me.
@reeseereece9 күн бұрын
I got familiar with the soundtrack before I saw it on Disney, and they did the same thing when Eliza reads the letter from Laurens' father. When I heard Anthony sing, "Tomorrow there'll be more of us..." it broke me! I went back and found it wasn't on the album, I assume, for the same reason.

First, the line at the start about being in so deep it feels easier to just swim down resonates hard with me. Very poetic way to say something so sad. You were saying how because you've never experienced a loss like this you couldn't fully connect with the song (I know I just said that wrong). But having had a loss like that, oddly, a similar reason is why I love this crushing song. To think about and deal with the actual tragedy from my life and those feelings... Unimaginable. But to be able to feel and deal with all that through a piece of music and theater.... Even though the song is emotionally devastating, it still lets me feel those feelings on a mute, relatively speaking. And the forgiveness part, a small emotional miracle in utter darkness? So moving in such a healing way.

💗Amari, your videos are a real treat. I never make it through these songs with a dry eye, and watching it with you made me cry and laugh and feel so much right along with you. You never cease to impress me with your insights, descriptions and genuine appreciation for so many facets of art. You are a true joy. I also appreciate your self-awareness in that you identified more with “Burn” than with “Quiet Uptown”. Should you ever become a parent, that may switch for you, as I’ve never cried through Burn, yet I’ve never made it through Quiet Uptown with a dry eye. A point I’d like to note… With a relationship that spans decades (such as theirs) comes perseverance and a companionship that binds people on many levels with a lot of complex ties. They had several children. They lived in a time where divorce was not common and when women didn’t have a lot of options (even wealthy women), especially options without massive stigma. I’m sure she loved him, and hated him, and had to make a lot of compromises for many difficult reasons. Finding a path through all of that and still finding a way to connect is sometimes the best option. It reflects how much a woman like Eliza had to bear, yet still search for the good in life… that which keeps us moving forward, if not for herself then for her other children. I believe that is why she takes his hand and forgives.

I didn't know her yet then, but those physical injuries and the PTSD and emotional trauma affected her life and her kids lives ever after, as I'm certain it did for a vast many of the survivors. Knowing that while my friend was down at ground zero rushing to assist the people who were trapped without a second thought for her personal wellbeing... farther up the coast, my ancestral community was rallying to aid the terrified passengers without a moment's hesitation, even though they themselves were expecting an impending hurricane... Well, it paints those events with exquisitely vivid realism in my brain. Have the tissues ready though if you decide to react to that musical, you'll likely need them! And maybe a sweater for the chills! 😂🤣

Philip wasn't ready either... The doctor tells us "the bullet entered just above his hip and lodged in his right arm" that means the bullet passed through him, his intestines specifically. That means his bowels infected the wound immediately. It was a mercy he died so quickly, he might have lingered for days. Vader's interjections were *chef's kiss*. Can we get back to politics?

🫂🫂🫂🫂🫂🫂🫂🫂🫂 All of the hugs. This section with Philip is brutal. Before I had ever listened to Hamilton, I had many friends who told me”don’t listen to Act 2 while you are driving or in public”. I didn’t listen, and listened to Act 2 on my way to work.🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️ thank you again for your truth and honesty.❤️

Now I can finally say this. While Lin and Phillipe were walking off stage for It’s Quiet Uptown Phillipe actually started crying because she had recently lost a family member and Lin whispered to her asking if she was okay. 😢❤

That's not true! Just a fan rumour that gets passed around

@ Maybe, maybe not. Did you look into it or are you just saying it?

🫂 I look forward to every one of these reaction videos. Watching them is like seeing the whole musical again for the first time; and I thank you for that. Your wisdom, empathy, AND sympathy radiate in this one especially. Kudos.

🫂🫂🫂 Another fantastic reaction. I appreciate both your insightful dissections of musical technique and form as well as your heartfelt responses to the story and acting. This show hits hard in several areas; it's natural to feel it. Thanks for continuing!

The power of grace - particularly when the person doesn’t deserve it as Alexander did not - it’s fierce. I’ve seen this show many times now and that moment hits me so hard every time. “Forgiveness.” “Unimaginable.” 🤗
