JC, I buy my spinning reels , Okuma, from Walmart...the price is right, the gear ratio is right, the ball bearings work...never had issues...it is good to save money during tough times...I even have & use my first 7'0" Shakespeare Ugly Stik Striper rod from 15 years ago...all from Walmart...Cheers from Maine.

I got a Zabco bite alert combo 4 years back, got everything from small baitfish, to 5ft tarpon, to 6ft bulls..... Learned I love fiberglass rods because of the durability and how it loads and bombs weights way above it’s listing. The only problem with the reel is the drag clicker went out. I never serviced, and never rinsed it as it was just meant to be something to hold me over for a single trip, this thing has seen it’s fair share of dunks, and lay downs in sand, and still as smooth as when I got it. Gave me another light of trust after my zebco catfish fighter broke from my father accidentally put a heavy bag on it, but it took a 8-9ft shark that swam straight down and honestly should have shattered the blank, but instead snapped the 80lb mono on the pier.

I closed the car door on my rod tip the other day. Drove 90 minutes to my fishing spot before I realized that it was closed in the door. I thought for sure it was busted but it was still intact. I fished with it all night and didn't have a problem. Ugly stik rods are tough.

I have an Ugly Stick bait casting rod that I've had for 30 years. The only issue with it is some of the cork at the handle has dried out/rotted.

My personal best freshwater fish (~40" flathead) was on a medium South Bend rod. Heard the rod start making cracking noises during the fight, but it never broke. I'm probably going to retire that rod this year.

Hey JC, another great vid. I really enjoy your sharing rod/reel evaluations. Three years ago I went to the Walmart in Osprey and decided to purchase a Tsunami Citadel Combo comprised of 2pc 7' rod/4000 size reel/20lb mono for $19.99. I thought this would be a great stick to keep in the trunk of the car. This combo has taken numerous sheepie/pomp/small snook. Regards from Boston. 20" snow here and more on way today.

J.C. I bought a 10 dollar zebco spinning reel. It was about a month ago. Hooked a 4 ft. clown knife fish sunday. That fish whooped my butt. Bent the hook on my white rapala. And broke the rod. It was a break down rod so it broke on the male end. I got lucky and was able to break that piece off and it fit back together. The fish got away when he bent the hooks all to hell. But I could still fish. I thought it was a huge bass. But I got it to the top and could see the spots and the no tail it just came to a point. I would have loved to get a picture. Would have been the first one I've ever caught. Thanks for listening to my long fish story J.C.

Nice combo JC! That rod bends just as much as my ugly stik haha! I love using inexpensive fishing gear more than the expensive stuff. I would recommend you try the Shimano IX4000 they go for about $13. I got mine at kmart but I have seen them at Walmart too.

I think there is a real law of diminishing returns when it comes to expensive gear. That said, the same usually holds true for real cheap gear too. But most stuff, expensive or cheap, usually works pretty well in the beginning and short term. Like you said, time will tell for the Ozark reel and Zebco rod. But, you got a night of fun, great weather outside and a meal all for just $25.....who can complain about that! (well minus the cost of bait, hook and braided line). Plus the gear is still working and ready to give you another night or day of fun!

All my reads and reels are from Walmart, the only thing i do is take them apart and fill the inside with marine grease, fill it up ad much as I can then put it back together, so in the event that salt water splashes from the kayak, I know the inside will be safe from corrosion and all my rods and reels have lasted me years.

For $30 I'd gone with the Shimano Syncopate,$30 for any of the 3 sizes 1000,2500,and 4000.They're probably the best bang under $60-70. Cheap is good,especially in my situation,but I also want dependability so as not to be wasting $ buying another.I've had a 4000 since the 80's.caught everything from Panfish to Striper to Black/Red Drum.I've since bought numerous 1000 and 2500 sizes for my other rods. I am phasing out all my spinners though for baitcasters,round,conventional reels,even on my Panfish/Crappie rigs. I always use a piece of PVC if just only to sit the rod in while I bait,remove fish or wait for a bite.I never lay my rods and reels on the ground.I also have a plastic bucket whether it's to wash my hands,hold bait or both.It also works good to carry any extra gear. Low quality SS rusts,high does not.A lot of heavy equipment that has been sitting out or been abandoned and the hydraulic shafts still haven't rusted,even after decades sitting in the elements. I don't watch football or most any sport anymore,they're all to commercialized and just out for that $$.The few times I looked a the TV at the local VFW there were a number of plays that shouldn't have been called and others that weren't,as usual,most all in favor for "Brady's team".

I hope things worked out for you. It took the registration office almost two months to complete my registration. I had to download forms, fill them out and put them in a drop box. It then took three different conversations on the phone before they finalized it.
