Is a $10 Fishing Rod Worth the Money? (Ozark Trail Wayfarer)

In this video I test out the Ozark Trail Wayfarer, which is a $10 rod and reel combo that you can buy at Walmart. Will it catch some fish, or will it fall apart in the process?

I have 2. The tip eyelet of one broke off after about 6 fishing trips. On the very next one, I hooked a small catfish (under a pound) and the actual rod tip on the other one snapped. I really wanted to love these rods, but I can't recommend them for anything other than casual sunfish fishing from a dock here and there.

I bought this rod for 9 bucks, one for me and the other for my friend I went to go fishing and I caught 2 sun fish it is surprisingly worth it you could probably go ocean fishing and that's my next stop also I want to go bass fishing with this rod I bought all the stuff for it. ALSO!!! You can change the spinning reel from right to left.

That is a nice sized bass ! I just bought this same combo today but haven't tried it out yet. I am going to use it soon though for largemouth bass.

It is definitely capable of it. Just won't last as long as other reels. Mine hasn't fallen apart yet, but I don't use it as often as I used to. I've caught lots of crappie with it and bluegill and a few decent bass and catfish.

Yea i caught two 5lb bass in a row and then a 7lb pike it’s great rod

I find the rods to be somewhat serviceable. Reel is junk, put a Shimano FX on it and give it to your kid. If he breaks it, or drops it in the lake you're not out much.

It's not a bad rod for $10. I have caught quite a few different species with it. Mostly smaller fish, but it can handle an average bass or channel cat.

Surprisingly these are really nice rods for 10$, I just got one today to store in my car for bass and trout fishing. Took it out handled a 2 pound bass easily but I can see replacing the reel later down the line

I have had a couple problems with this one. Mostly user error, but I plan to do a full review of this combo one of these days. I still fish with it, using it as one of my main rods.

I’m 21 and really want to get into fishing, so I bought this fishing rod since I didn’t want to get an expensive one since I’m fairly new to fishing in general so I got this one for essentially a training wheels rod Is it good for beginners who are learning to fish

@@KevinIsAMilitaryGenius is not bad, I would recommend ugly stick rod medium, fishing various fish how ever catfish can give you a good fight just learn use drag is very important, don’t invest a lot on bait casters due they are more difficult, you can learn later on the road 👍.

the rod itself is good! But the reel is 50/50, especially if you fish a lot, but yes, it's definitely good enough for a $10 combo, I got a few, for me & kids, I've been using it for the last 2 years and only replaced one so far

I've got the same one does really good, I've hade it for a yr thing I noticed is the nut in the center that holds the spinner in place like to lose up a lote an have to tighten it quit a bit. But other then that it's a good rod

Handle rod got bent. Not sure if from cranking in 3 lb bass or someone stepped on it. Will post replacement part when I get it...

Being a cheaply built reel, I'm sure parts will get damaged easier than on most other reels. I haven't had that issue with mine, but I do have to tighten the nut on the spool every so often.

I also took it to a local park and caught some nice sunfish with it. I'm planning to go back to that park and make some videos because there are apparently 39 different species of fish in that lake. Hoping to catch a variety of different fish.

It is good for beginners. I have found that it has a little too much line on it from the factory, so it would spool off the back periodically and cause tangles, which can be very annoying. Open face spinning reels can also be a bit tricky in general with tangling, but it is all part of the beast. I have caught lots of bluegill, sunfish, crappie, bass, and catfish with it. It is not the highest quality, and I imagine it will fall apart one day, but for $10 I'd say it was a good buy. I used it as one of my main rods for a while until I got a more expensive one, but I still take it out occasionally. I keep meaning to do a review on it, but never got around to it. @@redneckofftherange3008 thanks, also for casting do I raise the guard thing and cast it, or do I leave the cast guard flat and cast cause I lifted up the guard thing and casted and when it went into the water I would put it back down so no more line would get out Was that the correct way to do it

@@KevinIsAMilitaryGenius In order to cast a spinning rod, you flip the bail with the hand not holding the rod and hold the line with the hand holding the rod. Swing the rod back and then forward to the direction you want to cast and release the line. After the bait hits the water, flip the bail back over to keep more line from coming out.

Yeah the reel is not great, but mine is still going strong. I've got mine set up for catfish. I've caught a few smaller channels with it. I will probably do an in depth review of it one of these days.
