Scott! I knew that was a 'breadboard' radio the second I saw it because my father, as you know, collected and restored antique radios and I became somewhat educated in the various types. Breadboards were one of his favorites and he would go on and on about them! I wish I had saved one of the Atwater-Kent breadboards that he had. My High School 'science project' was creating a 'Cat's Whisker/Crystal' radio, lol! Nice estate haul, thanks for sharing!

Scott I almost dropped my garter’s when I heard you say you were in Ridley Park or maybe Prospect Park. I live in Ridley Park and am so sorry I didn’t know we had an estate sale in our town or prospect park which is next town over. They are little boroughs that are next to each other. I truly would’ve had detached retina’s if I came upon you at the local Wawa on Chester Pike🤪. Sometime help the uneducated know where to look for estate sale notifications. Please can you at least say what street it was on. So glad you got the magnificent shade and the radio’s. Candy jar was an awesome deal💲

my dad said that the radio they had would dry out because his dad had it too close to the radiator. grandpa liked his chair close to the heat and the radio would get dried out and crack. the grand piano was on the other side of the room. it was a little living room. my sister bought the house after they passed. it was an old farm house from the 20's, but had three bedrooms upstairs and one on the first floor.

Those radios are truly the cat’s pajamas! The Freshman radio is so clean….I’m assuming that this came straight from a radio collector. It will be fun to see what you can get going…I’m excited about this. I can almost hear the castanets playing from Paul Whiteman’s “In A Little Spanish Town” coming from that Freshman.

According to family lore my grandfather had first radio in Baltimore. Must have been even more crude than your breadboard. His parents were displeased by all the visitors the radios brought into the house. He went on to become a radio pilot for Pan Am in Peru in very early aviation days. My mother was born in Lima.

Congratulations, Scott! That lampshade is awesome, and I like the unusual candy dish. The radios look to be in good shape, but that breadboard model looks positively diabolical! Wouldn't you like to know the story of how that speaker got from Utah to Pennsylvania?

As I am watching and listening to you talk about the radios, I can hear the passion and the excitement in your voice. It's nice. It was like I was there. I hope you enjoy your new raidos. I also hope we get to see some restoration in the future. Take care. Have a groovy day. 😎 ✨️

You hit the jackpot at that little house. Thank you for all the information on those old radios--fascinating. Around 1950 when my little brother was 6, he got a crystal set kit for Christmas. Our Granddad, Dad and Uncle took over putting it together and wouldn't let him help--he cried. Eventually in the late 50's he let me have the crystal set. I put the antenna in the bedroom screen and managed to get Canadien Broadcast Corp. while near Albany, NY. I never knew what the crystal was or that the little needle was called a whisker--thank you.

Man, did you ever make out today. Really happy for you. Were the old batteries used in your older models square and made of super thick glass? I've seen a few of those in old dumps I've kicked around in. My area wasn't electrified until 1936 and old timers (gone now) would talk about the "before" times when everyone would gather at one neighbor's house to listen to his radio.

What would a person have been listening to on a radio they made themselves, before radios were even a thing? There couldn't have been many stations, to start, and those must have been in larger cities. Just interesting to think - how did they even get their start? There must have been IMMENSE fascination with them. Maybe we're just innately drawn to communication We've certainly come a long ways in a relatively short time... as I swipe across a 2.5"w glass screen and tap to send. Really kindof mind-blowing.

Scott, I enjoyed hearing about these antique radios. I had never heard of the bread box radio and found your discussion of the features very interesting. I love the casket radio. How elegant. I really know very little about radios, but love history and learning about things. I forget what you called the rounded top radio, but it brought back memories of a cathedral style one from my childhood. This radio was one That I listened to in the 1950's and '60's.. During my high school years it was in my bedroom. Late at night I could draw international radio stations. Cuba came in the clearest. What a adventure! Of course the weather had to be clear and just right. Most often, I listened to a Chicago station featuring Frankie Yankovik (sp?) and his accordian and friends. I learned to love polka music. I was a farm girl from N. Indiana, about 15 miles of US 30. Now I live within 3 blocks of US 30 in a senior apartment complex. By the way, I believe you are just a few months younger than my youngest son. 😊 As someone used to sign off with, "Thanks for the memories." 😊😊😊

As much as I enjoy watching a shopping video I definitely do not enjoy the frequency of people videoing everything & anything today. I've often thought if I was in a thrift store & a group of resellers descended, cameras in hand, I'd just leave- after checking if any of the handful I watch were in the group of course.
