The yellow and black Yamaha's from that era. The sound of air cooled two strokes. That's what my childhood dreams were made from.

Nice! I own a 1980 yz250, 1981 IT175, and 1982 YZ490 with a 465 cylinder. The blaster head on the 250 is a cool idea for higher compression. These old air cooled 2 strokes are so cool and pretty simple to work on.

1981 Yamaha YZ250 and Suzuki RM250 really were the the weapon of choice in that year. The Prolink Honda suspension wasn't well sorted out in the first year although it was water cooled. The KX250 had a great motor (that's every year). Husqvarna's CR250 was a fairly solid choice for those familiar with the Swedish steeds. Maico 250 had a superior chassis but engine lacked the zip for GP/Supercross style tracks. KTM's MX250 was still designed for European style tracks from a geometry standpoint and the Bombardier powered CanAm was wickedly powerful but the chassis needed upgrades from stock and was a bit portly. My investigated formed opinion, like that 7th planet from the sun, may stink to others...

CR 250 eat all exept kawa. yamaha was popular chepaer , nice bike easy for parts (since they brake like soda cracker) Suzuki ok but not for me. Husqvarna not that popular in the 80s late 70s, ofcourse Husq has great reputation. Not tu mention a CR with mugen kit, no one compare to mugen honda

The rm250 suspension in 1981 was definitely the best. First year of the full floater swing arm..

My brothers rode dirt bikes back in the 70s and 80s. The rich kind in town got a brand new 1981 yz250. That thing was fast at the time. They did hare scrambles all the time. I would trade my 2012 ktm for this in a heartbeat.

Those last year AC bikes needed a disc! 😂😂 As much as the WC bikes did. This thing is beautiful!

At 1981 when the Yamahas had the outdated monoshock design, the Suzuki RM's had the world's first full floater swing arm, which was basically the concept all motorbikes use to this day.

Well, by this time the rear shock layout was better than the ones that went right up through the backbone. The H model was still competitive esp in this modified spec.

BEAUTIFUL, I had a 76 yz 125 that thing was fast!! I got with the Motor in a Milk Crate. These Old bikes have the Greatest look. I Don't like the looks of the New bikes just flat across the top and I hate the fenders also. I would Rather have that old 250 to 100 new ones. Great Job

@@garymallard4699 did you like the 490’s better ? I know the 465’s ran better but the 490’s had better suspension but they pinged bad. The head was a bad design according to the magazine’s at the time. And that 4 speed ? Not too great. Honda did the same thing with the 81’ 450, they blew cranks right n left and had a 4 speed. 82’ was a 480 but still a 4 speed then in 83’ they nailed it. Damn I wish I was young again lol.

I never like it when Yamaha stared cutting that big arch out of the piston on the intake side.. Adds to the piston slap, the two rec holes with full skit was much better. My 490 is a rattle trap because of that, know matter how tight of a fit that piston starts to rattle quick.
