This is probably my favorite home theater so far. Not many of us can afford the $200k theater's built in a mega mansion and after a while they all blend together. Any rich schmuck can pay somebody to build a real movie theater in their humongous house with a $60k projector and $40k in speakers but this DIY theater has heart & style and is something that a lot of us average Joes can achieve. Great job John @diyhometheater4199 I hope someday my scrappy basement theater can be half as nice as your garage. Cheers

The backrow of seating is clever...first time I've seen something like this before Awesome use of acoustic treatment on the walls to make it blend nicely with the other panels! Holy cow the star ceiling... I see a dachshund!! 150 inch in a 12 foot wide room is awesome! My room is similar width, but the ceiling height and location of subwoofers has me limited. It looks like you were able to toe-in your FL and FR....love this for in-walls. Wish I could do this in my room I love the DIY foam pieces under the rear subs! Fantastic Theater! I admire the skill and effort put into this. So much better than the tours I see where the person obviously has money, spends big money, hires professionals and get the basics of speaker placement wrong. This guy did everything right and I bet his "budget" setup sounds and looks better that those "professional" ones as well.
@BuildMontage
@BuildMontage Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. Ironically, I do those tours as well - I don't discriminate in either direction.. The previous tour to this one was a high end room. There is a place for both. Having money should mean someone shouldn't make a nice non-diy room, but I get your point and I also really appreciate DIY, being a DIY guy myself :)
@diyhometheater4199
@diyhometheater4199 Жыл бұрын
Thanks man! Yeah I planned everything with maximum value in mind, including making absolutely sure speaker placement and viewing distance were all correct, because if they aren't it's not much different than throwing away money right? All the angles for the speakers are within atmos specs, the screen is 42.5° of viewing angle. I even have the left and right surrounds upside down so that the tweeter is lower to preserve a straight line from the rears to the fronts to keep the sound on a consistent plane. The saying goes, you can have cheap, fast, and good, but you can only pick 2. So it took 2 years 😆
@jjchmiel78
@jjchmiel78 Жыл бұрын
@@BuildMontage Don't get me wrong. I love high end rooms with equipment I can only dream of owning. I suck at DIY so if I had the money I would pay as well. What I HATE is they have it and do it but they ignore the professionals or the "professionals" are anything but. Speakers at 7' high with Atmos speaker in the 8' ceiling as an example. A huge screen that is not acoustic transparent with $5-10K speakers shoved into the corners and the center just sitting on the floor not even angled towards the listener. Doing 9 bed layer but only 2 Atmos. Again doing expensive speakers and really expensive powerful amps and yet only having 1 $300 Polk sub. The room may only be 14' deep but shoving their single row against the back wall and yet have Triad speakers. Having movie panel posters and they tell us it is on canvas. It is those type of builds where they have every advantage to make an incredible room and they don't that gets on my nerves.

With over 100 effects, it's pretty easy to find ones that aren't very distracting, like during the Lord of the Rings clip, I used one that doesn't change at all. They can be set up to be very slow, very dim, or completely static. I only used bright ones for demonstration purposes. I usually use a slow red Ripple effect when watching movies and shows, which doesn't distract at all

I think they are, they don't come into play as often as one might think. When they do it's hard to tell, the transition is pretty seamless

Sorry for the long delay, I made them all myself. Most of them are cut from rigid foam insulation panels, with pva primer with fire retardant mixed in, then painted in "dark secret" from Behr. The rest are either MDF, or thin plywood with acoustic foam glued to them. So bad news, you can't buy them.

This is prob one of the BEST home theaters I have seen fabricated. Very amazing. I looked on DIY home theaters channel and did not see how the wiring of this LED wall array was accomplished. It says that connecting to one would sync them all, but that does not make sense if these were seemingly turned on randomly, like in the electric storm mode? Is there any directions or guide that he used so I could understand this?

If you join Tony's discord, I have a build thread that explains things a bit better. So the controllers are synced together as such that they change effects, colors, brightness, speed and intensity together, but the effects that rely on RNG still produce different looks, even within segments on the same node. That effect, Lightning, is random, which basically works like each segment has a mind of its own, while obeying the commands of the user for brightness color etc.

Quick question, Without me doing research.... What wire is needed to do the GIY bass transducers in the seats? 2 conductor, or can you split it off of coaxial? Does that just tie into your sub channel? Asking for a friend... :)

The transducers wire up like any other speaker, I used 14ga wire. The Dayton Audio amplifier uses the subwoofers channel with a splitter just like you said

Most people are so desperate to hear audio come from above that they don't even realise when listening to anything other than Dolby Atmos content with the height channels on, it actually messes up the soundstage! Mind you, you can't blame them especially when they keep being told Dolby Atmos is the next best thing to sliced bread.
@diyhometheater4199
@diyhometheater4199 Жыл бұрын
My receiver automatically switches between audio content, so if it's not atmos, it doesn't use the speakers, unless I override it. I'll say, it's subtle enough that you don't really notice, with the timbre matched speakers, it just seems right. But if you listen to some new music that's mixed in atmos, it really is a different experience

So, it isn't really in the video because there's too much to cover already, but the front left corner is actually a door to the outside. Building code requires 2 exits, so I couldn't block that. Plus, the 12' ceiling really changes the perceived size of the room, and it's worth having the stairs especially after I got the kegerator under them
@diyhometheater4199
@diyhometheater4199 Жыл бұрын
Also, the surrounds are still in the correct spot. 90° from the center position, which is 14' back from the screen. The right surround has a hexagon shaped cover, so you can't tell. Thats also why the railing on the stairs is like it is, acoustically transparent for the right surround. It's 7.2.4 after all
@commanderrussels2612
@commanderrussels2612 Жыл бұрын
@@diyhometheater4199 the room is over 20' deep though, i'd just have had stairs to the other exit and not had stairs right by your head. you could have also sloped the room and kept much of the ceiling height, it would just be to get the seats high enough where your ears are above the stairway. also since the work is all DIY you could have just ignored code for that, but, again with the depth having stairs to that exit would have been fine. either way, room looks great enjoy

@@commanderrussels2612 maybe it's not clear enough in the video, if you join the discord I have a build thread that might make more sense? All the speakers are on the proper plane, and correct angles for a 7.2.4 dolby atmos setup. The problem you're talking about does not exist in this room. All 7 ear level speakers are where they are supposed to be. The black hexagon tile above the 3rd step is the right surround speaker. The listening position is back far enough not to be blocked by the stairs. And the other exit goes outside, you're right I could ignore code, but I did want to be safe just in case my wiring catches the house on fire 🔥

@@diyhometheater4199 Considering it takes 20 minutes and about $30 to do some screen masks, you'd think a must-have basic like screen masks would be easy, compared to what you've already done with the room. Why even bother with the other stuff, when your picture isn't even framed in properly for best visual results? Especially when masks are one of the cheapest and easiest things to do in a HT.

I appreciate all the hard work but it's not my taste. The stairs ruin it for me, and as cool as the retro space-age walls are, they are a distraction and I'd have them turned off most of the time, so what's the point? The star ceiling is great, as is the DIY spandex screen. No doubt the kids have a blast in there.
@diyhometheater4199

There are over 100 different effects, some very subtle, and not distracting. The point is to look neat, to make you feel like you're in a place that is somehow outside the normal world, and they are awesome when listening to music and gaming. Sometimes I just sit in there for hours listening to music, and it feels like I'm in a movie. As for the stairs they were unavoidable, and all the speakers are properly positioned and on axis, so when the lights are down and the movie is on, you don't know they are there.
