Fischer was 2 points down in a 21 game match. He needed a win. He had never beaten Spassky before. He was playing Black. All of my friends and I thought the match was over. When Fischer won, we thought he was a god. I remember that day like it was yesterday.
@StephenDoty846 жыл бұрын
Yes, and recall how when he was on TV before the match, he said how he was not afraid of Spassky, but it should be vice versa, because Fischer had the higher rating. Fischer was the Mike Tyson of his era, as best I can describe it to kids today, in that the same hype about specialization was in the air, e.g., my father once told me, "All he knows is chess since he was a kid; it's all he can do." Then I had a friend in 1986 say about Tyson, "All he knows is boxing since he was a little kid -- it's all he can do." The specialization and commitment of both men was fascinating.

I remember following the match every day ... Most everyone said it was hopeless for Fisher by Game 3. He was down by 2 points, he lost Game 1 from a stupid blunder, chickened out of Game 2, and Fisher had never beaten Spassky as this level before. This was the crucial game ... Today's heroes would have blamed a dead mom and checked into rehab. He showed up, played brilliantly, and won the match. He is the best ... the best there ever was, and the best there ever will be.

A magazine article in Life said Fischer was so happy after this. He went to his room that night and replayed the game several times to enjoy his moves.

Also just a side note, Benoni defense black has more power on the darker squares and white has more power with the lighter squares. So it was advantageous for Fischer to trade his knight on h6 for whites light square bishop.

why was Nb5 never played to attack the d6 pawn?
@sixthSigmaSnowball15 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's a nice check/fork...Fischer left himself open by keeping Spaasky in check instead of snagging the D5 pawn or pushing into G2 to wreck shop and snag the A2 pawn. I think he just felt too far down in material and was lazy, but Spaasky was lazi-ER. :)

3:10min - Why didn't Sparskky KC4 capture black knight forcing Black Bishop or centre pawn to capture which means Fisher's double up pawn remains the same? I see no weakness in that move at all. If black bishop captures then I would push the pawn to force black bishop to give up tempo. Either way KC4 is a vital capture to the black knight first. What you guys think?
@raymundsantiago32518 жыл бұрын
+Optimus Prime in my chess engine capturing the knight is a very bad idea .. why bishop take ? instead of the rook who will give more pressure on the king side btw capturing the knight is -2.08 depth of 29 in komodo 9.3 and stockfish 7 is -3.19 depth of 32 ..
@buckmajor8 жыл бұрын
raymund santiago Why is it bad idea? This changes the outcome of the game structure of the pieces on the board which means it will take the knight out of the game and open it up more for Sparrsky's bishop and pawn structure? Which means Fisher's double up pawns remains on board? The rock pressure is no biggie and will only retreat once Sparrsky push pawn forward giving him the advantage and forcing Fisher to give up tempo. I happen to beat a chess engine at the highest level so I wouldn't rely on it? Give me a full PNG analysis that this is a bad idea and in losing state game then I will consider it?
@raymundsantiago32518 жыл бұрын
im not that pro in chess but engine does say its a very bad idea try look at the position of black so many piece aiming on white king
@buckmajor8 жыл бұрын
raymund santiago Do you even know what you're talking about? Where is the full PNG analysis that I asked for? Piss off and stop talking Shit!
@daniluzzu7 жыл бұрын
I also tried to picture what would happen after NxE5, and if you go on a few moves and see the resulting position you'll understand why chess engines immediately go in the negatives if you do that. First of all, if black re-captures with the pawn on D6, you remove the weakness of the Benoni (pawn on D6) by reconnecting it to the F pawn, and the C pawn is still fine because it's connected to B and A. But even better, if black re-captures the Knight on E5 with the dark squared Bishop black's position is just way better! This bishop can sit on E5 and any continuation after any white move gives black a much better position. For example, white defends with F4, that is so bad, it opens the diagonal on the King and the Bishop can also sit on D4 , another super powerful square with no white pieces controlling it, gaining a tempo because of check, etc. black has a lot of play here, considering both Bishops are alive and the Queen is coming. If white defends with G3, again, this weakens the defense on the white king, and Black's white Bishop is ready to go. Black has a lot of play with the pawn structure around the white King looking like a colander, and black's white Bishop is coming soon too. And in those positions the H5 pawn actually looks strong! that pawn on H can really help the Queen crack the white King's shell. In any case, Black has better position in all the continuations I can see. I think Spassky's declining the Knight exchange was actually the strongest move (it protects from black's NG4, and sees a nice outpost on F5, blocking black's white bishop).

+Jo mic Sure. It was considered a good move at the time. No one had even considered Fischer's innovation, .....Nh5.
@TheSLK668 жыл бұрын
+Jo mic Because it's not a bad move, clearly not the best but not a bad move. Gives the queen a chance to move closer to the center and gain more activity and trying to put pressure on the c file in case the d pawn eventually falls.

Interesting theories ... but totally out of character. Fisher always played for a win, and was widely known and well respected for abhoring grandmaster draws. But he would never throw a game nor would he push for a win if there was a high probability of a loss. The consensus of opinion then and now is that he miscalculated the complications and the chances they gave him to win. But after such a questionable move, what an ego-smasher a win would have been ... what balls!

Im still a rookie and I'm wondering why Spassky sacrificed his bishop to take the knight on h5 at around 2:18, can anyone offer any insight?
@arturskvortsov49038 жыл бұрын
+danny well Im not an expert myself, but knight is a very powerful figure in the center of the board, so basically spassky decided to exchange the pieces, thinking he would have had an advantage that way, but as further in the video you see it helped fischer to weaken spassky`s king side, because he didnt have that bishop. other thing, if you watched a documentary about fischer youd know that he loved to play with bishops.
@u1337ochka8 жыл бұрын
+danny because generally you don't want your pawns to be doubled, pawns on h5 and d6 can be taken easily if black isn't super sharp like Fischer. One inaccuracy and you have 2 weaknesses on the board that a chess champion would not forgive
@bowrudder8998 жыл бұрын
Taking the N on h5 destroys black's kingside pawn structure: instead of connected pawns, black would have 2 pawn islands, and the backward pawn on d6.
@sixthSigmaSnowball15 жыл бұрын
I humbly disagree. Certainly true of later matches in this series, but this was the first game in the "other room" right after Fischer whined about the cameras until they caved right? I think both players were a little sloppy in this round...

@Bl4ckR0ck Fischer is the greatest chess player of all time. Every other world champion does something other than play chess. You people dont realize, this game was his obsession. Kasparov is married etc. All the little things that distract you from playing the game, fischer ignored. He was the michael jordan of chess and he would beat anyone ever. You cant stop a man like that. Fritz at times hasnt even picked up on a fischers moves. FRITZ. And I have to say Paul Morphy was the best talent.
