Tom, thankfully your posts show how much care goes into your herd. It’s a shame the BBC didn’t use you as the comparison against the undercover filming? Keep up the good work. So glad to see a dairy farmer choosing quality over quantity. The milking Shorthorn was the the mainstay of the British dairy industry 100 years ago, before the Dutch Holstein Friesian pushed every milking breed aside because of their milk production was so much higher. But those qualities of milk come at a cost to the cow's health, longevity and quality of milk/milk fat, the cost to feed to support that production, cost to house (temperature/humidity controls) where as the dairy Shorthorn could produce significant quantities of milk and butter fat on a diet of just grass and hay. As well, other then providing shelter from prevailing winds, it can handle the British Climate without needing a barn or stable. And her calves provided the farmer with either a milking herd replacment or an excellent beef to provide meat. It, along with the Scottish Ayrshire, your Brown Swiss and the other lower producing breeds have been, sadly, all but eliminated from Dairy herds. We've even seen the genetic diversity of the Holstein squeezed down to fewer and fewer bloodlines as higher and higher production sires are chosen over others that may be sounder, longer lived, or physically better put together lines just to increase the liters in the holding tank. It's genetic diversity is what is going to protect us in the long run. And while you may not see this Shorthorn investment improving your liters/cow milked, she's going to pay off in the overall health of your herd and the meat in your farm shop. If no one else applauds her arrival, over on this side of the pond, I do. And thanks for evoking fond memories of 'Old Spot', our dual purpose Dairy Shorthorn on the farm I grew up on and the very patient, quiet cow who let me learn to milk as a 4 year old and let my brother and I 'ride' on her while she lay, chewing her cud on stormy winter afternoons in a warm Canadian stable.

Sooo chuffed for you Tom! Your animal husbandry skills are amazing. I've been around a few 'proud' mother cows and bloody hell...scary at times. That Mom cow was so calm around you...and that calf just took to you like hand in glove - love it! As to name - and I don't know how your Dad would respond - but I suggest Ginger Lass. It'd be neat if you'd share the calf's progression because 'Ginger Lass' also took to the camera like she knows she's a super star - very photogenic, indeed! Thanks for sharing. Cheers...

Thank you Tom, i love seeing new life coming into the world and we can see how much you adore your cows by the way you dote over them and make sure they are comfortable and have the very best possible chance of a problem free birth and life... It realy brings a tear to my eye when i see it as i worked on a 100+ milking herd farm back in 1999-2000, i do really miss those days and would love to find a job near me on a dairy farm. I see you doing things that i remember doing back then but many other practices that i dont recall doing...I find it very interesting how much cow husbandry has changed over the last couple of decades. Please could we see more vids about calf club, I for one am really interested in what they do and im sure there are others like me. Thanks again for a lovely video, i look forward to the next one as your videos bring a little ray of sunshine whenever you post one. P.S... Are there any plans to get a Pemberton Farm map on the new Farming Simulator game (FS22)??....now thats a map i would love to play on. P.P.S... I think you should call the calf......FELICITY-FEVER....Felicity means "intense happiness" and is derived from the Latin word felicitas meaning "luck, good fortune". It is also used as a form of the Latin name Felicitas, taken from the name of the Ancient Roman goddess Fortuna.

She’s a great looking calf. Yes. It’d be great to know more about the calf club and the science behind the numbers. Tom, it would be such an amazing honour to me if you named the calf Earl. It’s not so common anymore, but it was my dad’s name. He loved dairy cattle, and had a farm in Northern Ontario for many years. He’s been gone for a while now, but I’ve no doubt he’d have loved watching your channel as much as I do. He was also born in February, so it would be a good fit.

What a great looking calf Tom from an equally great looking mum. This brought back so many happy memories as in my younger days looking after the calves was my job and loved every second of it. What many don't understand is the level of commitment and care that most dairy farmers put into their herd and in particular your own and your teams dedication. There will always be bad farmers who miss treat just like there are bad humans who miss treat other humans! Looking forward to following this ones journey. Thanks

Hello Tom, I think you should name her Hope. You said she is the first. And with her you have hope that this system will work for the future. It’s nice to watch somebody who truly loves their job. Kathy

Congratulations! Shorthorns were the most common family cow pretty much up until the modern day because they were good milkers, docile, easy to do, easy feeders and made good beef too. 🥰
