Listening to recordings of Janis songs you can hear her rawness and intensity, but watching her perform like this makes you see just how hungry for love and just how generous in heart she was. In these live performances you can tell that she is really giving it all to you and she lets herself be unapologetically vulnerable. She pushes it out there without abandon, without fear of judgement. Lesser artists try to calibrate their performances and control the narrative. Janis just gives it to you, sometimes battered and raw, letting her heartache speak to yours.

The older that I get the younger Janis seems. When artists pass before their time it really does make the world a little bit more drab. Keanu Reeves was asked by Stephen Colbert, "What happens when we die?" Keanu paused for a second and then said, "I know that the people who love us will miss us."

I am drawn to revisit this video. First of all I am so happy that Janis is in your life, and that of your daughters. My sister and I were about 12 and 13 when we first heard the album Cheap Thrills. When my sister was 15 she got a part time job, and had cash to spend on buying more of Janis's music. Not only that, my sister decided to rock Janis's hairdo, and you should have seen the crush velvet pants and blouses she had in our shared closet. The observation you had with Janis's stepping back into herself is spot on. I've seen actors, musicians and athletes step into themselves, but when Janis goes in and comes back, it means she had traveled to ALL the light and dark places, and she turned all that wisdom for the pain into music. All I can say is more Janis.

@@MrBonners "Texas Blues" always seem to me to be one of the muddiest mixes of music genres. Of course it wasn't even heard of as a genre until the late sixties, a few years after the great book on the history of the blues in Texas, "The Blues Comes to Texas". There were certainly lots of great bluesmen who came out of Texas, but not a lot of it was anything new, with the notable exception of T-Bone Walker who pretty much introduced the electric guitar to blues. He actually played primarily Jump Blues, and later helped create the West Coast Blues genre. But to me his style of music was completely different from Blind Lemon Jefferson, often called "the father of Texas Blues". And Blind Willie Johnson's Gospel Blues style doesn't resemble either of them. Mance Lipscomb's style is very much like the Delta and Folk Blues of Mississippi John Hurt (who is not considered Texas Blues). And honestly, it just seems crazy to me to consider these diverse styles anything like the styles of Johnny Winter, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Janis Joplin. To me "Texas Blues" more of a generic term for anyone who comes from Texas and sings or plays the blues than a valid and distinct sub-genre of the Blues. I've heard some claims that it's Jump Blues, but Jump Blues came out of Harlem in the late thirties.
@MrBonners
@MrBonners 2 жыл бұрын
All genres are come out of other forms. Eg. Rock from R&B and Southern Blues spawned the genre "Texas Blues', it's own stand alone genre for decades, no muddy mix. Eg. Rock from R&B and Blues mix. See: Stevie Ray Vaughan, ZZ TOP. Same for Rockabilly rock, see Stray Cats and the Punk Rock/ New Wave genres, see Billy Idol and Blondie. All around long enough, decades, to be stand alone. Chicago Blues is another.

And as a young guy would always gravitate to just "regular looking girls that no one notices but are genuine and full of talent and thus gorgeous". That's what Janis Joplin represents for me. Etta James is a great suggestion for a Female Friday because she's actually one of Janis Joplin's idols. When you hear Etta sing, you can definitely hear the influence she had on Janis's vocal style. A great example is this live performance of "Something's Got A Hold On Me." kzbin.info/www/bejne/habIqpSDpLqIqpY Etta does an extended acapella intro where you can really hear that soulful, bluesy grit and the sort of vocal mannerisms that Janis adopted.

Amber gets so excited about Janis Joplin. It reminds me of when you guys watched Halestorm last July and were so excited about Lzzy Hale and wanted to know about more Halestorm. But you have never been back. I suggest that you watch the official video of "I am the Fire". There are a ton of excellent Halestorm songs out there on video. From their new one "Back from the Dead" to the long list of great songs from the past such as "Here's to Us", "Ms. Hyde", " I get off","Apocalyptic", "I Like it Heavy", "Love Bites", "Freak Like Me" or even their slower side like " Familiar taste of Poison" or "Break In". Go back and enjoy some Halestorm. Also as a hint, Lzzy has done a ton of collaborations with other artist, like the Hu.

This was a Dick Cavett show performance with an interview, she did several. Funny you said she kept it real because she said the same thing in an interview. She was timid and shy, said she kept Pearl in a cardboard box and put her on for shows. Glamour wasn't her thing she was part of the audience not in front of it. She kind of watched herself on stage with the rest of the people. Peral was the performer Janis was a wallflower. It's a shame they took her friends from her (her band) They wanted the headliner, not the whole act, Lonely she turned to drugs. Had her boyfriend not stood her up leaving her alone and waiting in a hotel, I think she'd still be here. She had a strong will but a timid nature in need of people to lean on. People were always absent when she needed them.

I’ve been spamming their video with this request for a while now. I love the version on the Dick Cavet show. I think you’re right that they’d both love it since Jordan loves the Bee Gees

I saw her in concert about 3 months before she died. It was in a football stadium and we were sitting on the 50 yard line. Even from there you could feel her pain. It was authentic. Her performance touched me like no other performer has.

Amber- you get emotional because YOU are so authentic, too! And incredibly insightful for one so young. Much love to you, Sis!

So I’m so happy that you love Janis so much. I had the pleasure of meeting Janis at a concert in New York. She was the most humble and thoughtful artist I have ever met. I got to see Janis 3 times live! I’m glad you love to share her to everyone. Check out the Song Little Girl Blue. You talk about emotional.

Love when Amber gets to react it Janis, the joy is palpable! If you feel switching gears a bit, listen to Celine Dion, you’ve just scratched the surface with her. Listen to “It’s all coming back to me now” or “All by Myself”. She also has a duet with Barbara Streisand that’s incredible!

I agree to Celine Dion's "It's all coming back to me" but also to Meatloaf's version. They are both great.

Janis did her thing her way. She felt ostracized in high school and once she started her music career it was sort of "I'll show those bastards." She brought Kris Kristofferson as her "date" to a high school reunion to prove she had "made it." Then she cried all night after it was over reliving the bad memories of her youth. She was born to sing the blues like no one before or since. Suggest that you react to "Try (Just A Little Bit Harder)" as she was in rare vocal form on that one, plus she was backed up by the "best musicians she'd ever had" (her words) on the recording. The "hippie" or "flower power" generation (my generation) philosophy was pretty much described by the "Gestalt Prayer" which can be summarized as "I do my thing and you do your thing; and if by chance we find each other, it's beautiful." Janis epitomized this IMO.

I absolutely love Janis. When she died in Oct 1970 I was devastated. I was only nine years old but I loved her then. It was probably the screaming. Lol. I always loved her raspy voice. I wished I was older so I could go to Woodstock to see her, that was in 69, my mom didn’t like that idea, especially the thought that I even knew what it was. Yes they did have TV then. But Janis was a rebel and so was I.

Was so glad to see you get to this song. I thought Amber was going to cry when Janis sang the lyric "...we may not be here tomorrow". I hope can get to some of her performances on the Dick Cavett show 1969/1970. Her and Cavett were opposite, but theyloved each other and had great times when Janis visited the Cavett show as a guest.
