In my country every animal sold at a pet store comes with a warranty to make sure the pet store doesn't abuse them (if it dies within a certain period you get your money back or smt, so the pet store has to keep them healthy) but I guess they don't really care about that with fish as they are usually quite cheap from pet stores. In the one near me I also saw dead and very sad looking ones. Wayyy too small tanks, no substrate, no planting or rocks or anything... Part of me wants to buy them all so I could save them, but that'd mean giving that store money... Now I just go to a different one that treats it's animals a bit better

My first tank actually wasn't all that bad! It wasn't the greatest decor, I'll admit but my very first tank was a 37 gallon with a betta and about a half dozen mollies if I'm not mistaken? The mollies did well for a bit but I ended up killing 2 Bettas in that tank before I realized it was too tall for them to get to the surface to eat before the mollies demolished everything :[ Once the second betta died I ended up downgrading to a 10 gallon with a red crown tail I called King Henry and he did much better than the others had :] Eventually I bought 3 fairly large tanks from someone for about $200 (2 55 gallon tanks that I still have and a 70 gallon tank I ended up reselling). Never did anything with the 2 55 tanks but my mom tried her hand at keeping koi before she realized she didn't want to deal with the mess (I mean she had 5 in a 70 gallon tank and they grew quick AF) so they became my responsibility before I rehomed them to my aunt who has a koi pond in her yard. Then my cousin decided she didn't want her fish anymore and asked if I wanted them, which I didn't WANT them but I ended up taking them anyway since the tank water they were in when we went to look at them was so dark we didn't even know how many or what kind of fish she had at the time. It was 9 fish I wasn't 100% sure what they were-- maybe some type of cichlid or gourami and 3 common goldfish. 2 of the 3 goldfish weren't even alive. In a 10 gallon aquarium. Yeah, I wasn't going to leave them there so I set up one of the 55 gallon tanks (the 70 gallon had been sold at this point) and they definitely had an upgrade. The goldfish was already half dead so it wasn't a surprise that it died overnight but I was still left with 9 fish I didn't want so I had to try and rehome them. For a while I wondered why they thought buying 9 of these fish was a good idea until I noticed that after about a week there were maybe about 20 fry in the tank so they'd clearly been breeding out of control. It took about 3 months and many batches of fry culling but a close friend's grandmother was thankfully in the market for more fish! Admittedly, I don't know how they're doing today but I know that they were moved from a crappy little 10 gallon, to a slightly better 55 gallon, to a fantastic 200 gallon tank ^^ I went on a bit of a tangent with my fish journey lol but it tends to happen :] King Henry did end up passing after about a year due to swim bladder if I'm not mistaken and I just haven't had anymore fish since though I'm planning to set up a nice planted 10 gallon aquarium once I've gotten a new stand and some free time ^^

I work at a pet store and I had the idea of dating our Betta cups so we could discount them if they are here for too long. I can't say they all went to a good home, but I do remember one family that got an ugly little koi and initially had him in one of those stupid .75 gallon 'auto cleaner' tanks. He got sick so they did research and the next time I saw them, he was in a 5 gallon with a rainbow of colors and doing great. They've since added two (one king in a 10 gallon and the mom sank $100 into a 5 gallon and supplies for her own birthday betta present).

My fav use for jars and "fish" bowls is to throw an air stone in em and keep some media cycled, so I can seed a new tank. My first tank was a planted tank and I was lucky enough to find a more experienced fish keeper to sell me plants with beneficial bacteria to kick-start the cycling of my tank, unfortunately he was also like "hey, want some guppies?" and I, a fool who did not consider the fact that they could have babies, accepted. My tank ended up overrun so I had to give them over to someone much more equipped for such a school of fish. I still think about it at night.
@Panneapple4 жыл бұрын
Hypothetically, how bad would it be to take plants from outside to put in your tank? I'm talking duckweed not... protected plants or something. I assume there would be issues with pollution and potential diseases or parasites that the plant could carry, but if you were to quarantine them, would it take care of the problem? I'm asking because I've been looking around fish stores online and offline to check prices on a variety of stuff, and while my local fish stores don't have duckweed (that I know of), I've seen fish stores online sell them, not for a very expensive price but it still feels like a lot for what many fish tank owners actually don't want in their tank but can't seem to get rid of. (Also, I'm very glad this video's title wasn't clickbait or sarcasm and this old fish really got to get a good owner who made it happy and healthy!)

First tank story: My best friend gifted me a small tank kit (maybe 2.5g? came with filter) to get me started in the hobby. I was interested in the fish she and her boyfriend (now ex) were keeping, so she wanted to encourage me to join them! I knew pretty much nothing about fish, but I was young, impulsive, and ready to put all my trust in the employees at the big-box petstore. I went home with a heater and two comet goldfish. (I think they were from the feeder tank.. I was super naive. The employee told me they would fit in my tiny-tank, but I should have done my research. Employees aren't allowed to say "I don't know", but I didn't know this at the time.) I did my absolute best to set up the tank and give them a home, but alas they were doomed from the start. No nitrogen cycle, and absolutely no room. I started getting really worried when they showed signs of illness... Hanging around at the bottom of the tank, barely moving or showing interest in food. I grabbed a turkey-baster from the kitchen so that I could suck up some water and fresh fish-flakes, allowing me to gently squirt the food in front of them hoping it would help them eat. It was then that I started panic-searching what might be wrong on the internet, and found out how badly I hecked up. I went right back to the store and bought a 10 gallon tank (the biggest I could afford at the time.. I think I was only 17 and didn't have a great job), bubble-tube(I think?), better filtration, better food, live plants, and like a lot of fishy medicine (they also caught ick at this point, I think,) One tank-transfer later (Again, no cycle...) and I was super optimistic. I think they died two nights later? Buried them in my garden, learned a lot, and re-purposed the 10 gallon tank for a red betta. Sometimes your best isn't good enough. Never try to be responsible for another life without doing your research first. I was an idiot kid, and I'll do my best to make sure other idiot kids don't make the same mistakes ._ .; Rip Ziggy and Starman!

I actually bought a betta the other day, he was a dragon scale. He was in green water and in a box as big as your palm. He was bloated and lying in the bottom of the box. I took him home and fed him nutrient pellets and put him in my 2.5 gallon tank. Yes that's small but that's all I have. Much better than a .01 gallon. His name is sinker and he isn't sick or bloated anymore and I bought him a mini fake tube coral to live in and he enjoys it. It's so sad about how many bettas are abused. At least I could save one

I kept a betta in a half gallon bowl with a half dead Anubia, I saw fish for thought and got a 15 gallon planted tank for him (it was a terrible scape and was impossible to do matnece under the rocks) and the betta since died from being stunted in its previous "tank" now I have a 15 gallon low tech (no co2 etc.) Planted tank With cory catfish, cherry shrimp, ember tetra's green neon tetras and some Danio fry (had zebra Danios once and they bred for surprise baby's that I did not notice) and I saved feeder goldfish from a cramped tank and put them in my pond where they now thrive!

My first tank I remember having was like this fake gumball machine. It had marbles for the substrate. Maybe like 2.5 gallons, I put some sort of catfish in there and of course they didn't live long.

I get so sad because I used to have a crappy 2-gallon tank, a horrible filter, multicolored rocks, and fake plants and kept 6 goldfish in it when I was around 8. I was informed by my family that fish only lived for a few months at most anyways and generally didn't have the best education on how to take care of fish. After my goldfish passed away, which only took a couple weeks, I got two more fish (i think they were tetras) and they certainly lasted longer, until I got tired of the smell and....blew...air freshener in the tank. Again, I was 8, I didn't really know better, I didn't know air freshener would kill fish, and I was absolutely devastated when I learned that I had killed my fish. I honestly think I've suffered some form of trauma from this as I really really really want to try my hand at taking care of fish once again, but I'm terrified I'll make another grave mistake. I also haven't forgiven myself for what I did and while I do want fish, its very hard to think about when I myself killed two fish that I had grown really attached to and loved.

My first fish tank was just a small tank with a Grand Canyon photo as the background, orange sand and a desk light as the lamp. Jam packed with fish that my dad just bought. Now I’ve got a 150 L tank with giant woodscape and rocks natural stones. And an 80 L tank with one beautiful centerpiece wood branch thing lol and a beautiful rock in the middle And what happened to the old fish ...
