Hey Bob, Happy Holidays! I wrote you in September letting you know that I purchased a guitar and was very excited to get started. Well, I had one in-home lesson and have not picked up my guitar since. I'm a little bummed with not continuing. I look at my beautiful guitar every day, but don't make the time. Is this to be expected? Kimberly
@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons7 жыл бұрын
Hi Kimberly, good to hear from you and hope all is well. Sorry that the in home lesson didn't work out. This happens a lot, and for many different reasons. What I would do if you want to play is this.... Start out picking up the guitar for only 5 minutes a day, but don't plan on doing anything other than strumming a few chords, or picking a little. Just be unstructured and no worries. Enjoy your instrument in your hands. Put a date on the calendar that you are going take some sort of lesson. But this time, only do a very small part of it. Don't plan on moving ahead at all. Play around with it every day in your 5 minute routine. Main point is to have fun during this time and without any pressure. Then put another date on the calendar and return to that same lesson and continue with yet again another small chunk. repeat all these other steps. 3 possible outcomes will occur. you will keep doing the same thing, 2 you will be increasing your guitar time cause you're having fun or 3, you are not playing. choosing any of these possible outcomes is all okay. I hope this helps!!! bob

What a great teacher!!! Clearly not your typical KZbin teacher who is rushy with no intent on imparting the learner with practical and demonstrable knowledge and skills. He only ends up showing off his skills and leaving the learner intimidated and discouraged. This teacher tells you what you need to know and goes on to show it to you in a clear and slow fashion. Very motivational.

Hi Isidore, wow, what a nice comment here! I'm happy that the lessons are going at the right pace for you! I do try to make it like you are in the room with me taking a private lesson. But you know there's a lot of people that have commented over the years that I'm going too slow. O well, you can't please everyone. I think this slow and not leaving anything out detail is what most people need when they are first learning guitar. Wishing you all the best and if you need any help or have a question, please let me know- glad you are here!! bob

You are a good teacher! I'm just a beginnner. I am having trouble in holding three strings with my fingers for any chord. I guess i have to press harder. Sometimes I think my fingers are short to hold them down. I watched and followed someof your lessons for fingerstyle using 1 finger for each chord (easier to do) hehe. I enjoyed playing with it.

Hi Haji miru, thank you for commenting here and I'm glad you found my channel. Yes, what I recommend is to start with the easy 1 fingered chords, because with fingerstyle guitar we are able to do this that can't be done with strumming. I just sent you in the e mail the order you should take that will be enjoyable and easy. Once you get better the coordination will get easier and you will be able to play 3 fingered chords. Thank you again and happy guitar pickin' !! bob

This looks great Bob. I love the way your left hand fingers effortlessly between the G to C and G to D chords. This is the big challenge for me as a Learner.
@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons7 жыл бұрын
Hey Roger, thanks for commenting here- I will say just go slow and use a metronome starting at about 40 beats per minute, then bring it up a little each day. That will help with the chord changing.. bob!
@CaffeineJogger7 жыл бұрын
I'm able to pick beautifully and quite fast on a single not, ie, a C or a G or a D. Changing back to G is also a smooth transition. The delay is the G down to the C or the G down to the D. I'm working on it Bob.
@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons7 жыл бұрын
G to D is a common issue for people, and the slow down from G to C happens because of trying to form the C chord. Work on trying to press down on all three notes of the chord at the same time.- this usually goes or every chord.
@yandeni7 жыл бұрын
Hi Bob! Indeed, this is a very pleasant sound, in any case remarkably well matched to the song Amazing Grace. I am observing your fingers: they do not unfold completely and remain slightly curled. I note I use naturally the major and the ring fingers because my index is much shorter. I can not let the thumb near the strings after plucking the bass note: it rebels and stands up! it's like a reflex. I hope to get rid of it.
@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons7 жыл бұрын
Hey Viv! yes, goes perfect for Amazing Grace and anything else in waltz time (3/4) .... less movement, the better, this pretty much goes for anything guitar really!! I admit I never did this style before and it will take a little to get used to- but is a wonderful and widely used technique in a lot of styles of music. You will get it VIV!!!
@yandeni7 жыл бұрын
I feel that the charm of this clawhammer technique is also due to the fact that the strings are rather caressed than brushed because you look like attacking notes diagonally and not perpendicular to the strings, as in the traditional strumming which is more abrupt. Is it just an impression? This seems to me the case in your video "Mixing Strumming and Fingerstyle Together" kzbin.info/www/bejne/jnOmhYWendupeJY. Page 20 Study Guide. Thanks Bob!

@@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons For those of us who are just starting out, every little thing is very new, and we need to watch and hear your repetition. I have had my own Yamaha FS850 in turquoise less than 2 days but was learning on my husband's guitar for 3 days before that....but have discovered TAB for guitar and played Amazing Grace last evening a couple times following....it's wonderful how quickly the mind remembers the hand and sound! This is a good channel for you as I teach to your strengths which is very amazing to me only after two days. Do you need long fingernails to fingerpick? I always trim my fingernails.
@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons2 жыл бұрын
Hey Bob Bob, great to hear from you and thank you for taking the lessons with me. The answer is No. However.. many guitarists will grow their fingernails (picking hand of course) which does help to create a louder and more focused tone. You will see almost all classical guitarists with the long nails as I suppose they will be suspended if they brought one of those nail trimmers into the school (contraband!!) II tried to grow my nails and it didn't work at all (my nails scratched on the strings). So I do the same as you and and have developed callouses on my picking hand which does help- it's a softer tone than the nails. One thing I also do is use a thumbpick. This is what players like Chet Atkins did or Tommy Emmanuel. That alone will make the guitar a lot louder and crisper. Wishing you a happy Christmas and New Year! bob

@@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons Hello, thank you for responding. I've actually never played guitar before, and I really don't know anything about music. I just ordered an acoustic-electric steel string guitar from Fender. I think I only want to play fingerstyle with beautiful songs like 500 miles and Fly Me To The Moon. I just saw this video ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/jInJiJtrqc-Bbrc ), and now I realized that maybe I should have gotten a classical guitar. I'm now watching other videos of the classical guitar plays having their guitar pointed up, but I think I want to play like that video of 500 miles. I'm also curious if you think no nails are okay for nylon, because I really don't want to have to bother myself caring for my nails. I'm also left-handed, so I don't know if I should only try to find left-handed classical guitars or if I can just switch the strings around. Also, should I get an acoustic-electric? It seems like the buttons for acoustic-electric guitars are on the top, which would mean it would be on the bottom for me as a left-handed player. I don't really have much interest in playing publicly for now
@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons2 жыл бұрын
@@BobBob-gz5hj Hey Bob x2, lots of questions here and I will try my best to answer you.. First, you probably should consider buying a left handed guitar (either the classical or the aco ele.. ) The bridge, the saddle, the nut and the bracing and pick guard are all reversed (most importantly the nut, bridge and saddle). This would mean a bunch of alterations for the righty to lefty and it might not play so well, especially being an acoustic guitar. A standard electric guitar like a Fender or a Gibson is easier to change (ala Jimmy Hendricks and his righty to lefty Stratocaster). Bass player in one of my first bands used a right handed bass but never switched over the strings. Best advice is to go to a guitar shop and try some left handed guitars out (at least get a feel for them). You might want to call ahead of time because lefty guitars are rare and you hardly see any for sale. Friend of mine who plays the blues and lefty has over 200 electric lefthanded guitars. I guess the fact that it's hard to find, he made sure (FOR SURE) that he would never run out... ha ha... I don't think you need at this point to buy a lefty classical as that fender is good to learn on for now- I hope you didn't order the right handed guitar? . Those are nice guitars. The major difference between what you ordered and the classical is the steel vs. nylon strings.... very different sounds. Get going on the guitar and then get a classical... reason being.. the nylon strings are temperamental and require constant tuning. The plus side is the nylon strings are easier to press, but those Fenders have low action usually (meaning, the strings are closer to the fretboard and easier to press than say one of my acoustic guitars. As far as the guitar tilted upwards, I recommend to start out that way because your right hand needs to get used to coming around the neck at the proper angle. Otherwise if your fingers are not arched due to the guitar neck being parallel with the ground, the beginner usually always flattens out their fingers to reach notes or to play chords and touches other strings that should be ringing out. You can't believe all the students here that have major problems with string buzzing, note thuds, touching other strings with the fingers etc. In my courses I instruct everyone that's having chord issues (which is most beginners) to start out that way). Later after you get some experience and used to playing on your fingertips, you can ease up on the rules. Here's a video all about that: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZpaxpaykbJ1mmcU When you get your guitar (whatever type you decide) please let me know and I can guide you to my courses that you should take in the order I have them laid out. This way you won't miss anything as everything is expounded on. You can also email me at acousticguitarvideos@gmail.com if you want to get a head start. Everything is free to my guitar group and I will add you in. I hope I was able to help you Bob x2 . Please feel free any time if you have questions etc., !! Merry Christmas!! bob x1 (ha ha)

I just started playing guitar at 50. The c-cord has got me. I have small hands, and when I try and play it, the bottom palm of my hand keeps hitting the high E string. Frustrated.
@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons3 жыл бұрын
Hey Bill, great to hear from you and I think I can help you with the C chord. First video here is how to hold the guitar properly. This is so important because by using the correct technique, it doesn't matter how big your hands are- what counts is having your hands in the correct position: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZpaxpaykbJ1mmcU Second video is a series on the C chord which is here: kzbin.info/aero/PLx1uwVXECJKgRU8mBM9dz5b5PMfixU-Um Now one other thing, if you e mail me I have a free to my group course on learning the G, C and D and exercises for it at all different speeds. You can e mail me at acousticguitarvideos@gmail.com if you want that course. Pretty much anything that can go wrong is covered with all that I sent, but the body positioning is really the key as it will allow you not to keep hitting string 1 E with your hand by coming in with your fingers at the correct angle... Let me know if this helps and if not, we keep going till solved. bob

This is so important to slow down the tempo where it's comfortable for you, and you can't really do this without a metronome. So the first step is to find the right tempo (your first baseline tempo), however slow, and stay there for a while (maybe a few days or even a week,,, but till you have it nailed). Then after you've covered this with lots of reps, set the metronome up maybe ta few clicks higher. So if you were at 40 Beat Per Minute (BPM), push it to 43. Now you may not notice much of a difference, and don't just push it up to 75 (despite the temptation!!). Now you have a new baseline tempo at 43 and stay there for a while. Keep repeating this process by moving the metronome up in slow increments and before you know it, the trouble that your were having with the fingers getting to where they need to go correctly will vanish. Lastly I will say that it's the slower tempos that help your fingers to learn what to do rather than the fast stuff, but boy does it help the fast stuff!!. If you need more help or want to give me an update, I look forward to it Bill. You are doing excellent so keep at it. I hope something here helps!! bob

hey bob, that Woody song is 3/4 as well so, this strumming pattern works for that song too!! But I think Woody played with a pick?
@lastpicker17 жыл бұрын
yea, but I used first finger to go up and down and up don't remember who taught it to back in the 60's

Hope you will try this technique Bob, as I said in the video the tone is very good, much better that playing with the fleshy part of any finger or thumb. Thanks for telling me about that song, brought back memories!..

This is a great routine, but it still doesn't sound like Amazing Grace, maybe this is just melody and I got confused from playing the actual song, please let me understand.
@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons7 жыл бұрын
Hey John, good to hear from you... we are learning the basic fingerpicking pattern that you can sing to. The vocal is the melody and the playing we are doing is the rhythm.. Does that make sense? Most people are going to want to sing this song as it has words to it. There are people who play this song that contains the melody and rhythm at the same time, but we first as beginners have to walk through these steps before we can advance to such a level. Hope this makes sense John!! bob

Right, I understand now, but having explained in the email I am having problems changing Cords, don't if it's my brain or finger that can't remember.

I replied in the e mail John, I think that will help !!

Hi Bob, I'd like add about this comment: "it still does not sound like Amazing Grace", at first I had the same feeling but when playing with your TuxGuitar files, we can clearly hear and set apart the melody on track 1 and the guitar playing on track 2, and even mute one or the other by the menu "view" / tracks / and other features.... very comfortable to guide oneself in the song.
@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons7 жыл бұрын
Hi Viv, yes, once you start working on this , you do start to get acclimated to starting to hear what your job is on the guitar and the other melody element. I think the Tux guitar program is a big help for this- I hope people here will take full advantage of this free program... Happy Day to you VIV!! bob

That certainly is cool but doing that is like a drop in the ocean moment for me, I just can't seem to link up my fingers to achieve longer plays
@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons2 жыл бұрын
Hi *, (by the way, that is my middle name).. I think the way to solve that problem is to slow down the tempo if it's going to fast. This will make it so you can have more endurance (longer plays). You probably already know this as I have to keep reminding myself to slow down as well. Anytime you need help, just let me know- I'm here. have a nice weekend! bob

@@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons Yeah right on man cool crib you have here.. Anyways I struggle with fret buzz, the strings seems to vibrate when i dont press in the right place or use two fingers
@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons2 жыл бұрын
thanks @. . did you see this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZpaxpaykbJ1mmcU This might help a lot. The key is to get your thumb in the correct position which gets your fingers to arch properly (not buzzing, fret noise, muted notes etc., ) Let me know if this helps (it should). You can start this way with the body positioning and then ease off on it once your fingers are trained to arch... or just stay this way. bob

@@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons holy smokes bob you have my upmost respect woah ive needed someone like you for ages! yeah man i’ll look into that finger positioning it makes a lot of sense to start there for me personally as I’ve found a plato of skill and my fret board fingers are holding me back haha anyways i prefere using no pic to play i think your fingers make the most beautiful sounds

Hey @. I just checked out your channel and saw a couple vids of you playing.. You have talent, that what I will say! You have to e mail me and I will send you all my courses (free).. I play with thumbpick, regular flatpick and nothing- it depends on the song. You can do it all too, but start with just the fingers. You are also playing a classical guitar and normally they play without picks but do grow their fingernails to act like picks. I've developed callous not only on my left hand but right hand as well- definitely makes up for not growing the fingernails. Anything guitar I can help with. I am a full time studio musician for my living- teaching is a hobby. Okay, bla bla bla... hope to hear back and get you going!! bob

For me, finger style is all that's left. Had a bar go thru my right hand and can't feel anything in the hand so finger style is it.

You're using the front of your nails, not the backs.
@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons5 жыл бұрын
Hey D C, thanks for taking the lesson and glad you are learning guitar here. You are correct- for the fingerpicking part the front for sure. You will see fingerstyle guitarists with the long nails, as this helps with the guitar tone. For the strumming part, the direction is the opposite of the fingerpicking, so I don't know if you would call that the back or the front (tried my best to explain here) but it is not the same as the fingerpicking. I hope that makes sense.?. THanks again and best to you! bob
