The EASIEST Fingerpicking Pattern [PLAY in 1 Minute] .. guitar fingerpicking beginners features perhaps the easiest "legitimate" right hand pattern for fingerpicking that is the first pattern you should learn before anything else.
The pattern features just 4 notes, and is commonly referred to as "Thumb over Thumb." First with the right hand, we learn how to pluck strings 5, 3, 4, and 2. And that's all there is to it!
Millions of songs can be played and adapted by using this pattern (anything in 4/4 timing). And the best part is, this simple fingerstyle pattern will take most beginners all of a minute or less to be able to play it.
If you are wanted to learn how to play fingerpicking guitar, than this is the first lesson you should take. Comes with sheet music/tab and a Tux guitar file as well- all free.
In this lesson, fingerstyle guitarist Larry Maltz shows Bob Harris this very popular fingerstyle pattern, however simple, and also teaches a very easy song which features 1 and 2 note chords on the right hand. Most beginners will be able to easily learn this step by step song with just a little day to day effort- time well spent!
After this lesson, students are encouraged to take Lesson 2 of The EASIEST Fingerpicking Pattern [PLAY in 1 Minute] .. guitar fingerpicking beginners" which is located here.
If you've ever wanted to learn fingerstyle guitar and have it all laid out for you step by step, you will find this lesson one of the easiest to follow.
As a sharp contrast to this easy fingerstyle guitar lesson for beginners, check out our mini music video entitled "The Worst Guitar Lesson I Ever Took" which features the song "Message In A Bottle" (fingerstyle guitar performance). • The WORST Guitar Lesso... A Slapstick guitar lesson!!

Yes Bob this pattern is easy and accessible to all, while being very pleasant and melodious. Surely the easiest and nicest fingerpicking pattern I ever met on the web for more than 3 years. The second section, with Am7 on 5th fret brings a surprising and nice variation, as easy and natural as the first one. It's great pedagogical art! It "only" remains to improve later to add soul and emotion as i feel in Larry's play. I shared the 2 videos on Facebook and Tweeter, although the audience be mostly French-speaking but English is a 2nd language here. My grandson asked me to initiate him to guitar during next summer holidays. This pattern will be our tool to start. I think we can very quickly play it together. Thanks for all this happiness!

Hi Viv, You know, I just mentioned this to Larry, but it's nearly identical to the pattern I taught but, instead of 1 ...2&3&4& it's all 8 notes (my pattern leaves the & of 1 and sometimes the & of 4 blank. Thank you for sharing!!!! Hopefully your grandson will pick this up !!! Thanks again and chat soon!! bob

I feel a bit late to the party here having just started learning at they ripe old age of 60. I just wanted to say thanks for all the work you put into helping us all learn as beginners. I have tried many other video teachers and you are hands down the best!. The pace and explanation are brilliant and keep me coming back for more, even when i get frustrated with how long it takes to get Ito my brain. I love it when my right hand gets into automatic mode after constant practice!. So much so i have upgraded to a nice Taylor guitar. To be fair i did feel a bit sick spending that much on a guitar but my first ever guitar is now used for practicing techniques then i reward myself with a play through on the Taylor! Anyways thanks for reading my ramble if you ever get to see it. Hope you are doing ok, kind regards from the UK.
@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons
@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Simon! Great to hear from you and congrats on the new Taylor!! It's so worth having a good guitar and it shouldn't only be for advanced players- beginners would have a much better experience learning on something nice and easy to play. The main problem is many beginners don't know whether or not they will continue to play and can't justify spending the money for a good one. But I think you know already that getting a good guitar also creates a commitment to keep going. Anyway, I'm very happy for you!! It's funny about patterns and such as sometimes you don't have to think too much, and other times it's a struggle just to pick 2 measures in a row. After a while like you say, it will become automatic as you're hands have stored the memory. Sounds to me like that is already happening for you in a big way. Thank you also for the kind words- I'm happy to help! Keep me posted and have a great guitar weekend!! bob

Hi Bob What a beautiful pattern! It's not only an easy fingerpicking learning exercise but also a very pleasant song, superbly interpreted by Larry, with so much emotion and nuances, with all the talent of a great artist who succeeds with minimal means - 2 fingers + 4 chords -, to create a rich and touching atmosphere. Hi Terrie, great to hear from you... this all takes a lot of time for most people as it's the left hand that is typically the uncoordinated one (since most people are right handed... ) Go slow, one section at a time... work on that for a few days or even a week or two until you can do it.. then move on. It all connects ...!! Thanks Terrie, let me know how you are doing any time or need help!! bob

Just a suggestion, Bob: why not insert a kind of short scrolling bannner on the video, after your play-along, to invite visitors to read the DESCRIPTION? I'm afraid all of us do not pay attention whereas it's so interesting and important to know.

Great Idea Viv... would you know how to do that sort of thing? I have no idea but it sounds like a great idea!!!!

Hi Bob, if you edit your videos with Filmora, it is surely possible. A simple invitation to read the description would be sufficient. It should not be long, neither scrolling. Just to be sure it is read! A few years ago i made several videos for a social org with "Windows Movie Maker" which was the basic app for editing videos and movies. I published some on my channel You Tube. You can watch a short video with a scrolling text. Title "Renovation". This one is public. I can send you the mp4 file if you like. Cannot here...

HI Deborah, thank you for taking the lessons here and happy 2020! There's free sheet music with this too.. E mail me at acousticguitarvideos@gmail.com and I will send it to you. That will help a lot with the chords. With this lesson, the pattern is very easy but the chords are more difficult. If you are looking for very easy chords as well, I have another course and you can also get the free study guide with this too: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iGLHkKmmp6eeiqc hope this helps and thanks again!! bob

@@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons Hi Bob. I'm cool with measures 1&2. I get goofed up when I have to go up to string 6 and skip a string. It frazzles me. I'm an intermediate ukulele player. I'm a 2 finger picker on 4 strings. I was gifted a guitar February 27. I jumped right in. Yes! I can play Barre chords! F!!!!!! But this picking is driving me nutz 🙃 I'm still on your 2nd lesson. I practice daily. Same issue. I loose my feel/place when I need to shift up. I'm taking it slow and easy. Patience. It's just not happening. The left hand is good. The right hand is not walking through the yellow pages. Lol ~Mary😎

Hey@@Marys-Channel , Very cool that you are doing so well and of course we are going to run into snags that you have to spend more time on than other things you obviously pick up almost instantly. So that string jump is always tough when learning it, and it's like half of the ukulele in distance- long way no matter how you look at it. What I will do is just play the thumb only (which is what you are jumping with ) and just work on that at a crazy slow speed - (in other words, omit all the other notes and just work on the jump with the thumb.) Important to use the metronome so you stay in time. Then slowly start to add the other notes in the measure. I guess you could always set up the metronome slow and just practice going back and forth with just the thumb on any strings far away. Try to keep your hand in a set steady position when doing the thumb, as that's the most important finger for fingerstyle because it's your root bass note and usually always played on the first downbeat of every measure. Just to make sure you know what I'm talking about, here's a video of me teaching a pattern and just starting out with the thumb first and then slowly adding other notes to the measure: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kGjbnpKgqrOWhrs . I hope this helps Mary, but if not, let me know and I will keep trying! bob

@@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons Thanks Bob. The link you sent is the 1st I've been working on and then next video adding the next chord. That's where I trip up. I'll just keep trying. Best ~Mary😎

Hey@@Marys-Channel, not sure I understand- I thought you were having issue with the song in the video above the comments here (you know, measure 3 with the string skip when going to the G chord?) The link I sent is an example of playing one finger at a time starting with just the thumb (apply this practice technique to this song by omitting the other notes in the measure). I'm sorry if this didn't make sense. Anyway, I have a great feeling that you'll be skipping strings no problem soon! Thanks again! bob
