A montage of gymnasts who made amazing comebacks from serious and potentially career-ending injuries to compete at the Olympics in Sydney 2000, Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008. They were able to overcome all odds to live the Olympics Dream. The gymnasts and injuries are:
-John Roethlisberger - torn ACL
-Kristen Maloney - sprained knee, rod inserted into her shin to repair a stress fracture, shoulder surgery to repair a torn labrum
-Blaine Wilson - torn bicep
-Annia Hatch - torn ACL
-Jason Gatson - 2 torn ACLs
-Courtney Kupets - torn achilles
-Justin Spring - torn ACL
-Chellsie Memmel - shoulder injury
-Kyle Shewfelt - 2 broken legs

Its so amazing how incredible gymnasts like these came this far, yet everyone makes mistakes, and they can really hurt, but they kept on trying and trying and thats how they got this far...keep trying, and never give up on your dream.

I respect gymnasts so much, especially after I sprained my ankle (3rd degree)...they have insane will to compete after that kind of injury. It's been three months and my ankle still isn't 100% and I still feel pain when I'm working out yet these gymnasts just wrap their injury and go out there...mind over matter. Risking a worse injury and probably feeling constant gnawing and aching pain that no surgery can really fix, only temporarily minimize.

To be fair, in the description section, the video's poster states that the people included made comeback after injury to complete in Olympics from Sydney onwards, which Kerri Strugg didn't.

@conidi1 There was Memmel's shoulder injury after bars, but a lot of the girls became injured off-camera, Memmel's second injury that limited her to bars in 2008 wasn't long after the team left the plane and was thus off-camera.

I feel so STUPID! I gave up gymnastics at lvl 7 because of a head injury:( I never went back because I thought it would be too difficult. Now I miss the rush before a tumbling pass or a hard skill. Moral of the story- DON'T GIVE UP. JUST TRY TRY AGAIN😪

I also hope Alyia Mustafina and Rebecca Bross get better for 2012 too. Gymnastics is such a dangerous sport that the greater difficulty elements come with greater risks! =S I just hope more athletes know when to say they need a break and need time to heal, otherwise it could be unfortunate =(

If there's a 2012 edition coming soon, I think the following gymnasts should be considered: John Orozco (USA) - tore his Achilles tendon at the 2010 US Nationals Aliya Mustafina (Russia) - tore her ACL and MCL at the 2011 Europeans @191peacelove and everyone asking about Sacramone - indeed, she would make this list in a heartbeat. However, she was not chosen for the US team. :(
@Lana2k6
@Lana2k6 7 жыл бұрын
UPDATE: Orozco would also have made this list for a few other reasons. After the 2012 Olympics, he tore his ACL and meniscus in training. Then, in 2015, he tore his Achilles tendon for the second time, and also had to deal with the unexpected passing of his mother. After all of that, he fought his way back to make his second Olympic team - only to see that dream come crashing down when he tore his ACL and meniscus again.

Kerri Strug ('96 Olympics in Atlanta) should've been #1 for her miraculous landing on her 2nd vault, on ONE leg, to give the U.S. ladies a team gold for the first time ever!! But that inexplicably wasn't even in your montage!!!??? I kept waiting for it, but it never came.

Yes, but this montage is about gymnasts who came back from injury to go on to the Olympics, so Kerri Strug's vault wouldn't be in line with the video. However, her 1994 bar injury would have been a good fit.

Gymnastics also includes Rhythmic gymnastics and trampolining (which was introduced to the Olympics in 2000). Rhythmics requires more coordination than American football, and flexibility above all else. Trampolining is like diving, but instead of 1 really cool move it's ten really cool moves. American football isn't even an Olympic sport, football/fútbol/soccer funding is being cut in Brazil and is being funded into Gymnastics while Brazilians are coming in.

nice montage but you left out a couple of big ones in 1984 Olympics Burt Connor won gold; and prior to that Olympics he had torn his bicep (don't remember exactly how long prior but scar was clearly visible during his parallel bars routine) AND also 1984 Mary Lou Retton had arthroscopic surgery to remove pieces of cartilage in from her knee just about 6 WEEKS prior to the games.

No, it's the anterior cruciate ligament that binds your knee joint together, along with the PCL (posterior cruciate ligament) and the MCL (medial cruciate ligament). ACL's, while common, are hard to come back from once injured.
