Great info Leah! This has been standard installation here in Canada for decades. One note: the threaded end is multi attach, and you can sweat a 1/2” copper directly into the fitting inside the threaded end, so two options there. Of course you have to remove the valve when you sweat it, so that you don’t melt the gasket.

Caution. We moved into our new home in Montana this past February. Had an inspection. Everything OK. Three year old home with frost free faucet. Turned on faucet in April .... water in the basement. HOW? The plumber thought that the prior owner left a hose on. The water could not drain. Thus the pipe split. So, do take off all hoses before the weather freezes.

@@JackHudler If hose is not drained the frost free valve may freeze. Water leak won't be noticeable until you turn the faucet on as the split will be in-between the valve knob outdoors and the actual gasket sealing area within the warm portion of the home.

@@JackHudler I am not sure why you have an issue with what I said, considering your suggestion was to buy a faucet with a vacuum breaker on the outlet so that the hose can be left attached year round. I installed two of these a month ago into brick with PEX-A. I cut a small wedge for each and inserted inside the basement wall to make sure the hose bib angled down. The mortar from the brick gave me a hard time, ended up using a mounting bracket that I ordered and I still had to sink anchors into the mortar because it just kept collapsing. I ended up repairing the mortar using your tuck pointing video.

I think my homes previous owner had one freeze. I disconnect hoses in the winter plus it has an interior cutoff in the sump room. I did have the antisiphon insert break last year. Easy cheap fix, thankfully a neighbor noticed it spraying and told us. Would really like a flush mount unit: screw adapter to hose, plug and twist in wall to use but that may require concrete work.

Replacing one of these tomorrow. You mention it but it's really important that it be sloped to drain out. I'd use a level on the pipe inside to make sure. (Don't assume anything in the house is square!) This is how my old one failed, it trapped some water inside (and there was water between the sillcock's valve and a shutoff as well.) and it froze.

We have one of these, and it's not highly accessible due to being plumbed into a crawl space rather than a basement. If yours is leaking you might be able to get a rebuild kit for it, that essentially replaces all the innards (which are responsible for controlling the water flow) without having to replace the entire thing.
