Ray is a very impressive mixed media painter from the UK. He uses mainly watercolor, gouache, pastels, chalk and graphite.
Sometimes he uses all of the above in a SINGLE painting!

Liran, seeing the artists through your eyes is so amazing. I have seen Balkwill's work before and thought "Oh yes, they are nice." But noticing the things that you point out and seeing things that I never saw before in his paintings gave me a new appreciation of his work. Thank you!

Hi Liron I've had the good fortune of painting with Ray , wonderful artist and a nice guy also , the texture in the background that appears to be dry brush , is in fact a very light application of pastel , also he sometimes dilutes masking fluid with water and applies it quite liberally in the foreground / sand and sea ,. A very generous and talented artist

Looks like gesso primer underneath the paintings at times.

Interesting - isn't gesso used to prep a surface for painting with watercolor? So does that mean the surface isn't normal watercolor paper? This is so different from what I'm used to! (:
