One gets the impression that the harvesting fields are located somewhere in the Mediterranean climate zone, and the resin and nut processing plant is definitely located somewhere in Russia. What other woman would wear gold jewelry before going to work at a factory?

The pine nuts or seeds are located under the petals of the cone. One seed per petal. Pine cones that have opened fully have already dropped their seeds. That is why the mature but not yet opened cones must be shaken from the trees.

How often are the trees re tapped? Here in Canada we tap our maples every spring but I like to make the smallest possible holes, I worry about those large gouges in the trees. We have loads of red pine plantations here though so I wonder about tapping a few of those. It would be interesting to see the next step of resin processing further down the line. Super interesting though, thanks for sharing

Wow! You are throwing away a very valuable and nutritious food. Of course, you'd have to find out if the species you have is really edible or not. Can't be too safe about it, but if they are edible.... that's a lot of money being thrown out the door!
