Exploring Jamaica and avoiding the high street chains and tourist spots. We found some amazing food in the most unexpected places from the edge of the highways, peoples driveways and hidden up in the hills. We tasted all the amazing Jamaican Yard Food from Curry Goat to Ackee and Saltfish, Jerk Chicken and lots and lots of Soup!

Agreed! I'm from the US and Jamaica is my absolute favorite. I stayed at a fantastic resort and had been told by others who visited the island to not go out of the resort. Of course none of them had went outside. Well, all of the Jamaican folks that worked at the resort were the most beautiful, easy going, just pleasant people I had ever met so i asked them about going outside. They told me to go. I went out on the 3rd day i was there and spend at least half of my day outside the resort for the next 5 days/the duration of my trip. I had the best time of my life! The people, the food, the island in general were the most genuine and cultured experience I ever had. I've been other places, I travel out of the U.S. every time I vacation and I've never been anywhere like Jamaica.

The big all-inclusive hotels foster a lot of the scaremongering amongst tourist, Cos they want to keep the spending on site. Whatever issues there is, most of the people love tourist cos they know what they bring to the island.

@Riaz Phillips: You make a superb ambassador: open to explore beyond tourist spots...respect for the local culture...supportive of the local economy, not the ritzy places belonging to rich foreigners on the island for they transfer their money back to their foreign lands which doesn't benefit the country. Jamaican and Haitian foods are almost done the same way. I've tasted Jamaican jerk chicken in NY, and goat meat in sauce in Columbus OH, they were good. But, us Haitians we use a lot of limes and sour oranges to wash our meats.
