The hallmark of all Dashes are those beautifully massive flaps. They make her soar so effortlessly in the air. Spectacular.

Before landing the plane is pointing directly at mountains and the pilot needs to do a ninety degree turn to come in line with the air strip. The cherry on top is that the run way has a mountain at its end. So once again, the pilot cannot possibly take it short or deep, instead the plane has to hit the dot on the first attempt.

When PWA had several Dash 7's operating out of YXD in downtown Edmonton, they used to go right past my kitchen window most days.

yes the location of the runway is very narrow and the mountain around are great threat to approach..

Great video shot, but you might want to position yourself slightly off to the side, so the camera is steady. You will still get the action and better sound quality without the video camera vibrations. Just mho. I enjoyed this video otherwise.

Almost like taking off at burbank airport on runway 15. Get it off the ground. Get the nose way up. Start your turn hard right to miss the 20 story ESPN Sports building directly in line with the runway. Take it out quietly over the multi million dollar home of encino.

Do you mean the dash-8 q400? This one came before the dash 8 series so it does make sense there would be similarities imo

The De Havilland Canada (DHC) - (dash) Seven design came about based on a major American study suggesting very short runways close to large and small urban centers would be the future of American air travel expansion. The Short Take-Off & Land (STOL) capable Dash7 had it's design roots in the De Havilland - 5 Buffalo and - 4 Caribou. Both were STOL military transports designed to fill a missing niche that became apparent during mountainous fighting of the Korean War. The DHC - 6 Twin Otter on the other hand was an extension of the DHC - 3 Otter STOL-like rugged bush plane line. When the predicted very short runway scheme of American airport expansion was not adopted and the operators of the DASH 7 complained of high maintenance cost because of the four engine design, De Havilland moved away from STOL aircraft design. The two engine Dash 8 was the first non-STOL or rugged bush design by De Havilland Canada.

Dangerous? Having been trained to fly there I realise it needs concentration & why certification is required but why dangerous? Berjaya have been flying dash 7s there for years without incident & it remains a popular destination for johor/malacca/kl/sg based pilots.

I have endorsement also to land here .. and it is dangerous with changing wind conditions and no go around below 200ft makes it dangerous

I do hope De Havilland Canada can come up with a twin turbo prop aircraft that could meet the Dash 7s STOL capabilities

This doesn't look dangerous at all, what's he talking about? That Dash 7 could have been up much sooner with an immediate right turn!

Please explain why this airport in particular is one of the most dangerous airports ? Because of the small terrain around the field ? Anyone know why ?

theres no going around below 200ft so you need to get it right and once below 200ft the wind can change significantly
