I would have looked to see if a male to female extension cable was available for that power supply. There are lot available on eBay in various lengths and connector types. It would make any warranty claim more straight forward if you had to return the power supply. I prefer to use oval conduit for sunken cables (as you often do yourself) but some connector types are too thick to slide down. Keep up the good work, Nick, and Happy New year.

Plus it allows you to integrate other smart devices from the internet of thieves without having to use multiple gateways. Hosting your own smart environment also allows you to manage the security of of all your devices. due to the nature of internet of thieves devices security is very low on the list of priorities and extracting your data to the cloud to be sold is. this meant that they provide a very good attack vector for hackers. If they can get on a device inside your network they can go anywhere. To anyone who want to user the internet of thieves Iwould say to pit them on a separate network and use home assistant.

Loads of it available, as well as wired KNX stuff, you just have to know where to look. Zigbee Light Link is used by Philips Hue, which is one of the most popular smart lighting ranges today, and integrates with Alexa, Google Home and Apple Home/HomeKit. Z-wave is an older technology, while the newer contender is Thread, which works on the 2.4GHz band like Zigbee. Both Thread and Zigbee create mesh networks so the more devices you have, the better the connection to the next-nearest device.

Have a look at home assistant. It can interface with lots of smart home device like Philips hue, Shelly etc. you can then set up dashboards that work on a number of devices ( I use Amazon fire tablets) to switch things on and off. No voice required and they could have their own tablet to carry around. You can event get it to do text to speech so they could press a button to get something to say a phrase. Your 11 year old may like getting it set up and working depending on their interest level and if they are that way inclined. Lots of tutorials on KZbin.

A better solution for the back would have been to put in a 25mm back-box with a brush cover on it and then bring the cable through that. Then you can fill everything else. Snip that power cable near to the end and and put some two core in the wall with capping/oval conduit (if you want). Then use a couple of Wagos on each end section to reconnect the power. When you inevitably need to change it again in another 7 years, you should be able to just swap it over, including whatever power connector your new device uses. 👍
@Lewdacris9162 жыл бұрын
but then you have 2 splices in the power cable, would rather leave it whole from manufacture
@elminster81492 жыл бұрын
@@Lewdacris916 Don't see a problem with that. It's unlikely to be still usable after 7 years.

I'd have been tempted to have put a deeper backbox in the wall, had a USB Euro Module in there (without the faceplate) an then any tablet would have been able to plug it's USB Cable In, rather than messing around splicing a manufacturers cable. Especially given the USB-C Mandate that's coming into the EU will mean that pretty much all devices will use that in the future.
@elminster81492 жыл бұрын
@@kylemson The kit Nick was putting in didn't use USB power, looked like some sort of barrel connector. With the solution I suggested above, you could simply pull out the two core and feed a USB C cable through the oval conduit instead.
