Hands down this is the most important video I have uploaded to date without a doubt! This means the most to me and has been the most significant piece of technology to date as well in regards to staying connected to my beautiful Mom during this miserable COVID chapter with her dementia as a caregiver…..just been brutally hard and this Amazon Alexa Show really has been the only saving grace and grateful I stumbled upon this while doing my research for myself. I know it’s long but wanted this to be thorough enough to answer most initial questions.
I am giving this Amazon Alexa Show away once I reach 1k subscribers so share this with anyone you know who may benefit from this or anyone you know who is a caregiver or has a parent that is going through dementia or Alzheimers or in a care home. My Mom literally is my EVERYTHING and saved my life adopting me as a kid and am honoring her in her later years making sure she is safe and cared for every step of the way.
To enter the contest you must be subscribed to my channel, you must be caring for a loved one yourself since I want a fellow caregiver to benefit from this device and also comment below why and how you would benefit for this, you must share this video with at least 1 friend or family member and once I reach my 1k mark I will select the candidates and enter into a randomizer and announce the winner.
Love what I do? Buy me a coffee.. www.buymeacoff...

Your Sir, are a good person and son! I'm sure you are aware, but I thought I write it here anyways. It's getting rare to see people care when it gets "inconvenient"!

You’re a godsend. My mom has both Alzheimer’s and frontotemporal dementia. This past week she’s been agitated, angry, and argumentative. She’s a wonderful mother and friend. My heart is breaking. I feel like I lost my mother. She thinks I spend weeks without talking to her when I speak to her daily. You’ve given me hope. Thank you so much. You’re mom is so blessed to have you in her life. And I’m sure she’s been an amazing mom. Take care.

TIP: For those in your situation who do have more than one Alexa device and want remote family members to drop in on Mom but not you, you can add an additional Amazon account for your mom at no cost. Put her device on that separate account and then set up the family members as her contacts and give them permission to drop in.

Wow! Over a year later and I want you to know this is still helping people. Like me and my 95 yr old dad, for example. You should start a business call "Kindness via Tech". You are giving us more than info, you are giving us hope, And tools to work with.I really appreciate it. Most of the other Echo Show videos talk about Drop in, but not in the detailed yet straightforward way you do. Would love to see more like this, especially as Amazon rolls out "Together". Yes, it is not free, but it has the potential for fall detection with wall mounted devices - nothing to wear. In any case, I wish the best for you and your mom, she is lucky to have you!

Thank you so much for this video! My mom ( has dementia also) just turned 90 a few days ago and is living in an assisted living facility. I have been trying to figure out what I could get to be able to see her and just say hello. Your video was so informative on this topic, I now know that this is what I need. Thank you and I know that your Mom is very blessed to have you looking out for her. Dementia is an awful disease, you don't realize until you've walked in those shoes of a caregiver. Blessings to you and your mom

It is a brutal disease and a caregivers role during this journey is one like you said nobody will know or dare to understand unless they walked in your exact shoes....it's beyond words challenging! Blessings to your Mom too and I hope this helps keep you both connected a bit more. Let me know how things go and if you have any issues or questions. xo

Very informative. Thank you. You are still impacting others even 3 years later. Two of my friends have their parents in assisted living and their journeys have been different. One friend's mother is out of state. The other has both parents in assisted living. The Echo Show should them help a lot. But it is your video and real life example that really had the most impact for them. Again, thank you.

What a great video. My spouse is suffering from dementia and I am constantly looking at ways to enhance communication and minimize her confusion. This also gave me another thing to look for as I look for a potential placement. The facility needs to have wifi available for its residents in order for you to use this. Thanks again for doing this.

I know this is long, but I hope you will read all of it. 1. Can you 'drop in' without disturbing the loved one just to visually check in?. 2. How far away from the device (or close to) does the loved one have to be? Can you call out to get her nearer, so she is visible to you 3. How much light has to be in the room or near your loved one. I am interested in it for myself. My daughter is nearby and could do what is necessary for me, but she works part-time for two different people, runs her home, and I don't want to add another "job" to her day. I'm 85 and easily confused by new things, so I will buy it for us when my time comes. Thank you so much for your precise directions and suggestions. Your mother "knows" how kind and special you are to her and loves you very much. I wish your family well and please know you are doing a remarkable job of taking care of her needs. Best of luck.👍👍

Ok so it will have a little chime when dropping in on your loved one. It is not completely silent, but not a loud ringing either so there's that. I am not sure you can disable that either, but never has been an issue for me startling my Mom for example. She doesn't even need to be in the room for the Alexa Show to answer. For example if my Mom is eating lunch outside her room and I drop in on her with the device it will auto answer and I just am left looking at her room until she walks in and I start talking to her. Of course you can call out and talk as normal they can hear you and I do this all the time when my Mom is messing around...I tell her to come sit down and have a chair placed in front of her Alexa Show so she is kind of trained to sit and focus and talk to me when I call her on it. It works out really well this way. It is really pretty simply technology too so don't be overwhelmed that is the beauty of this. Simply plug in and connect to the local wifi and if confused with this have someone younger you know or relative help...I am sure anyone would be glad to assist. Best of luck and they even have the newer Alexa Show out that moves and tracks the person so it will actually rotate and kind of follow them around. I don't have that one yet because I am worried my Mom may think it is too much with this device moving in her room. For now I am not disrupting what is currently working. Aloha and love and light your way.

This was so lovely and so incredibly helpful. After watching your video, I took an Echo Show over to my mom’s assisted living facility and, with the help of the staff there, was able to have a face to face (and maskless) conversation with her for the first time in 10 months. Brought tears to her eyes and mine. Tomorrow, the kids and I will be dropping in so that she can watch them open their Christmas presents. Best. Gift. Ever. Happy Holidays to you and your sweet mom.

Thank-you so much, for this share. My 97 year old grandma lives in Pennsylvania and I am in Florida. I am trying to convince my family in Pennsylvania and my grandma’s long term facility to allow me to place one of these in my grandma’s room, so I can keep in touch with her. She no longer understands how to use a tv or telephone, so the options are very limited. I am hoping this video helps them understand the importance of this device at this stage in her journey. This disease is truly isolating, my grandma can’t remember her visits, so as soon as you leave her, she forgets anyone was there. The result is that she believes she is always alone and wonders why she is still living. She feels she has no worth. It is truly heartbreaking! Thank-you, again for sharing a piece of your journey. I wish you and your mom all the best!

Hey, thanks so much for all of the top level and detailed overview including all the pro's and con's of the alternatives. Thanks also for being so open and sharing, it's difficlult becoming the parent to your parent, but this piece of technology os certainly going to help... I'm about to press buy now. My Mum's gone from being an active member of the community, volunteering with youth assns and the church, to someone who is bed bound, in long term residential care and being slowly taken away from myself and my children through dementia, so I am hoping this form of contact can help slow things down a little. All the best to you and your Mom.

Thank you for this video. My dad died in July 2021 and my mom has dementia. After dad died, her dementia advanced very quickly. I am the only family nearby to care for all of her needs. I live an hour away from her and work full time, so it’s difficult to go to her more often than Saturdays and Sundays. I was with her today and one of the Memory Care nurses showed me an Alexa Show used by another resident. I was so interested I came home and started researching. Your video has helped me decide to get one of these so I can check on mom much more often. Thank for your clear explanations of the product and the empathy you have for others who are going through the dementia journey. It’s so awful and heartbreaking. I will be ordering the Alexa Show today. Thanks again, Cherie

Thank you for this tutorial! I did order one of these for my mom and am hoping to get it set up in her memory care room next week. The pain this pandemic caused for dementia patients and family members is horrific. My mom was in assisted living in March. Now through so much isolation I believe her disease progressed even faster and she is in memory care. I don’t have a support group but just watching this made me realize that we are all basically going through the same gut wrenching experience. Hugs to you and your mom.

This was by far the best tutorial! It’s hard taking care of a parent, I too take care of both of my 90+ year old parents, born/raised Hawaii natives. I just set up the echo dots so they can voice call me as dementia is one parents diagnosis. I have used the drop in feature but don’t have the show yet. It would be nice if there was an eagle eye mountable “show” camera- looking forward to an update.

That does not sound easy have you ever considered a facility to help him and you? It’s not easy I know. Safety and ensuring their well being always first and foremost no matter what. I can’t even take my Mom out for Thanksgiving today, but thankfully she is safe and being watched 24/7. I know with my Mom being alone at home with dementia was just too much for her and ends up being that way one day with everyone with the disease so be mindful of this. This is a great tool for sure but in the same breathe doesn’t solve all. He sounds like he’s struggling if he wants to reach out and talk 50 times a day. Best of luck. 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾

Thank you so much for this video. Upon suggestion of a friend, I just ordered my Mom one but your video gives me great hope and excitement that my Mom will be able to not worry about the technology piece of it and just be able to see her family. My Mom has Alzheimer's and in mid-October, my father, her main caregiver, was hospitalized with pneumonia. We knew at at 86, my father was going to have a long road ahead, as he had other issues that compromised his recovery. We had to place Mom in an assisted living facility, with the intention that Dad would join her after he recovered. The quickness of moving her to a strange place without Dad was very hard on my Mom. Due to COVID, she had to quarantine in her room for 2 weeks. Five days from Mom moving in to her apartment, Dad passed away. My brother and I decided that we could not share the news of my Dad's death because we were unable to see Mom in person and to be there to console and support her on a daily basis. On the day of my Dad's memorial service, without his wife of 58 years there, we got a call that Mom tested positive for COVID. She was A-symptomatic but, regardless she then had to quarantine another two weeks. Now with the COVD numbers so high, we still haven't been able to see Mom. It's been 6 weeks and everyday she just tells me how lonely she is and wonders when Dad is coming to join her. It is heart wrenching but, we know it is in Mom's best interest right now. Anyway, my point to this post is to say thank goodness for this ECHO show and your video about Drop In, because I feel like this is going to be a game changer for my Mom until we can see each other in person. And knowing that she doesn't have to do a thing, is a big sigh of relief for me. I can't wait until Thursday when her internet is connected and I am able to drop off the Show and have the facility set it up for her. Alzheimer's/Dimentia is a heart wrenching disease. Bless everyone who has a loved one who has this disease and the caretakers who care for them.

Loving energy your way on your journey. I’m not sure of anything for the tv as of yet. A good tip for the Alexa is having another smaller non display Alexa in their room you can trigger music on and off when talking to her on the Alexa Show. Dementia snd stations like classical relaxation radio on Pandora and spa radio or whatever triggers them really works wonders. You can then turn the music off while on the Alexa Show video drop in call or do it on the phone on the Amazon app. The Alexa Show is a god send with this journey I really hope they make a larger display soon too. Let me know if you need any help. 💞💞💞

I am a social worker and I work with caregivers who care for loved ones with Dementia and other cognitive decline and I will certainly be recommending this especially during this pandemic. Hi, I came across your brilliant video just now. I am doing a research on what kind of skills might be of use on an Alexa Show for people in various stages of memory loss. I wonder if in the meantime you would have installed also some specific Alexa skills for your mum on top of the important drop-in feature you demonstrated that you can share your experience with?
@AtortAerials
@AtortAerials 2 жыл бұрын
Honestly I keep things simple especially with dementia. Drop in is 99.9% of what’s important as long as that’s working that’s all I care about. Sometimes mine needs unplugging and plugging back in it seems to reset and the one in my Mom’s room as well needs that when it has trouble connecting. I would say the drop in feature #1 hands down most crucial and playing music is nice too.

Thank you for creating this video! I bought the Echo Show 2 for my mother for the drop in feature. She is 85 with dementia and in assisted living. With full PPE, I was allowed in to set her up. I think it was a cumbersome process-- but so worth it!! It's important that the senior has her/his own Amazon Account. SInce my mother is pretty much bed bound, I need to make sure the camera is pointed toward her pillow. LOVED the advice about contacting Ombudsman!!! Some memory care facilities don't allow this (or phones) in the rooms-- but that's a deal breaker on my journey to find a different facility for my mother that specializes in memory care. Somehow, the Echo Show device became unavailable. Couldn't reach her and didn't want to walk staff through instructions for reconnecting to router-- didn't want them to have her Amazon account password or router password. I did take out her credit card information, which makes me feel a little more secure, and eventually hired a wonderful private duty CNA I trusted to reconnect. I walked her though the set up process using face time. I only have the App and needed to see the screen in my mother's room to facilitate the set up. Sometimes I purposely trigger my mom's Google Mini via Alexa when I drop in. (Like asking Google to play the news or play a game with/for my mother). And yes!!! No iPads or tablets for my mother, either!! She really has UNlearned how to do.... everything. Can't even use the remote control anymore! Need to figure out a way to help with that. I wish I could send a youtube video link (via announcements?) to my mother's Echo Show and have the video automatically play.

@@AtortAerials problem was-- not enough bandwidth!! Increased for another $10 and worked. Now I"m working on using a broadlink device and macros to turn on her tv to one of her favorite channels and at an appropriate volume (when she claims the tv is broken and she forgets how to use the remote control). I'll be able to do this from my home (or wherever)--- no need to be anywhere near her.
@AtortAerials
@AtortAerials 3 жыл бұрын
@@HeyLOOK-aSQUIRREL that’s great you were able to increase the bandwidth not sure I could do that with my Mom’s facility. So you can turn her tv on remotely for her?! And if so how? My Mom doesn’t even watch her tv anymore because she now thinks the Alexa is a tv or something it’s so crazy. She would always watch her programs a bit after dinner and now for months it doesn’t even get turned on and she just sits on her chair in her room or ends up pacing all over. This is such a horrible disease. I didn’t see your first post sorry about that.

@@AtortAerials give me a couple of days to play around with the broad link RM mini 3 universal remote. I'll definitely report back to you how it works. It works in conjunction with Alexa. I wanted to start a business doing stuff like this for other people even for free because it's really complicated actually! And I hear you about your mom thinking that you're the tv. I have that too with my mother. TV really calms her down and makes her happy. Does your mother often this place the remote control? Since my mother is pretty much bed bound hers gets lost in the covers which are a mess all the time or sometimes falls to the floor. There's an easy solution to this, right? That is to tie or glue a piece of yarn to the back of the remote control and tie the other end of the yarn to the headboard. fortunately, my mother's headboard has a lot of holes so this is easily doable. If the headboard doesn't have holes then add a hook or something above it. I'm going to try with the yarn first but I guess I might have to try bungie or some other way to keep it in from getting lost. Did I tell you that I have a Google home mini on her night table, too? I make announcements to her through Alexa using her smartphone and say something like, " OK Google play Jeopardy". "OK Google, play Neil diamond.' you get the point. I wish I could make the announcement to her Alexa for Alexa to engage her.

I just bought 2 (5 and 8) a couple of weeks ago for me and my mom. My mom is exhibiting signs of dementia and literally got results back today. She's never been any good at tech, but I set it all up with all her repeating reminders and contacts showed her how to use announce and drop ins and did some tests together. Of course, left a note by the tv explaining "say alexa", wait, say command, etc" She was so excited when she "called me back unannounced" later in the day all by herself (well, prompted from the screen), but I was so surprised she called me LOL This I hope will alleviate some of the major stress I'm feeling! This disease is so awful. Lost my dad to ALS a decade ago, which was the opposite of my mom's condition (body health vs mental health)
